Plymouth Brethren
The Plymouth Brethren is a Christian religious movement in Dublin Ireland in made prominent by John Nelson Darby , Edward Cronin, John Bellett, and Francis Hutchinson. As the movement spread, a large group of adherents assembled in Plymouth, England and the members were called the Plymouth Brethren. Between the years and a difference over the "independence" of local meetings resulted in the first division, causing a distinction to be made between the open brethren mainly referred to by the name "Plymouth Brethren" and the exclusive brethren Open brethren remain loosely affiliated and over the years have come to resemble Protestant evangelical churches in doctrine, except that there are no officially recognized clergy and the Lord's Supper is celebrated weekly - both of which are common to open and exclusive groups alike. Exclusive brethren experienced numerous splits over disputes as to doctrine and various groups resulting from these still exist. Schwarzenau Brethren Groups
The Schwarzenau Brethren groups originated in in Schwarzenau, Germany , in the Palatinate . Early leaders included Alexander Mack, Peter Becker, and John Nass. The Brethren were at one time called Dunkers or German Baptist Brethren After enduring persecution for a time (see Anabaptist ), the Brethren migrated to North America in three separate groups from 1719 to 1733. There they established themselves at Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , and from there moved south and west along with other pioneers. The Brethren Church shares its early heritage with the Church of the Brethren but was separated in 1881, being the most progressive of the three groups resulting from this split at the time of H. R. Holsinger. The most conservative of the groups (the

PLYMOUTH BRETHREN
PLYMOUTH BRETHREN In 1838 Darby went to reside in French Switzerland, and made many disciples. Congregations were formed in Geneva, at Lausanne, where most of the Methodist and other dissenters joined the Brethren, at Vevey and elsewhere in Vaud. His opinions also found their way into France, Germany, German Switzerland, and Italy; but French Switzerland has always remained the stronghold of Plymouthism on the Continent, and for his followers there Darby wrote two of his most important tracts, Le Ministere considere dans sa nature and De la Presence et de faction du S. Esprit dans I'eglise. The revolution in the canton Vaud, brought about by Jesuit intrigue in 1845, brought persecution to the Brethren in the canton and in other parts of French Switzerland, and Darby's life was in great jeopardy. The movement has a distinct interest for students of church history: (1) as illustrating again the desire of certain Christians to pass over the garnered experience of the centuries,~and by going straight to the Bible to make a fresh start without any other authority, precedent or guidance; (2) in its development alongside the Evangelical, T~actarian and Broad Church movements of the 19th ent.rry and its affinities with them all,. A certain haphazardism that has always marked the Brethren is responsible for the present lack of qualified leaders. The early enthusiasm has waned, and no provision was made for proper theological study. AUTH0RITIE5.-Darby, Collected Works (32 vols., edited by Kelly, with supplementary volume, 1867-1883); A. Plymouth Brethren by C. H. Spurgeon
From the February 1867 Sword and Trowel
E HAVE been requested to reply to a small tract which has been given away at the door of the Tabernacle, by one of the "Plymouth Brethren," but it is so devoid of all sense, Scripture and reason, that it needs no reply. We have not learned the art of beating the air, or replying to nonsense. The only meaning we could gather from the rambling writer's remarks was a confirmation of our accusation, and a wonderful discovery that a long controverted point is now settled; the unpardonable sin is declared to be speaking against the Darbyites. Neither Mr. Newton* nor Mr. Muller** would sanction such action; it is only from one clique that we receive this treatment. It is worthy of note that even the printer was ashamed or afraid to put his name to the printed paper. Our error was rectified as soon as ever we knew of it, and being fallible we could do no more; but these men, who pretend to be so marvellously led of the Spirit, have in this case deliberately, and in the most unmanly manner, sought to injure the character of one who has committed the great sin of mortifying their pride, and openly exposing their false doctrine. NOTES (added by The Spurgeon Archive) John Cox's letter to the editor in the March 1867 Sword and Trowel. [
