In recent years, several well-known Christian authors (including Tim LaHaye, Hal Lindsey, and David Wilkerson) have referred to the so-called Plymouth Brethren movement in their writings, renewing interest in this non-denominational Christian movement which originated in Ireland and England during the 1820s and 1830s. Plymouth Brethren ". John Nelson Darby (1800-1882) later wrote, "What gave rise to the existence of so-called Plymouth Brethren is the grand truth, the great fact, of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, to form the body of Christ into one; then the coming of the Saviour as the continual expectation of the Christian".* I trust this site will be a resource and blessing for persons who love the Lord Jesus (John 14:23), call on Him out of a pure heart (2 Timothy 2:22), and hope for His coming (2 Thessalonians 2:1). Version 1.9 This Frequently Asked Questions list (FAQ) concentrates on the so called "Open Brethren" since this is the background of the author. However, an attempt is made to explain some of the positions of "Closed and Exclusive Brethren". This FAQ should not in any way be considered to be an authoritative document representing the view of any local church or any individual (including the author). At almost every point in this FAQ, you will find Brethren churches that will disagree or differ. Variation is even greater between different countries. The author could probably best be described as from the traditional end of the open Brethren in North America. Suggestions and corrections should be emailed to: Shawn Abigail This FAQ now has an official home page! Plymouth Brethren
General Information The name Plymouth Brethren identifies several small Christian sects of common origin - found in Britain, Europe, and the United States - that are conservative in theology and millenarian in outlook. The movement had its beginning in Ireland and England in the 1820s, Plymouth being a main center of activity. The most prominent early leader was John Nelson Darby (1800 - 82), who taught that Christ might return at any moment and in a "secret rapture" would take away the members of the true church to dwell in heaven. The polity of the Plymouth Brethren is congregational, following New Testament models. BELIEVE

he Plymouth Brethren form a small separatist denomination that emphasizes the coming millenium, or end of the world. According to Owen Chadwick's The Victorian Church , "They began first as a little extreme evangelical group in Dublin from 1827 that believed anyone may celebrate the Lord's Supper [administer Holy Communion] or preach, and received the name when the strange powerful ex- Anglican clergyman J. N. Darby went to Plymouth in 1830. In 1847-49 the Brethren divided, through Darby's rigidity, into Open Brethren and Exclusive Brethren, the latter holding no communion with others. At the best-attended services on 30 March 1851 there were in England and Wales 7,272 Brethren" (36n). Francis Newman (younger brother of John Henry , who was to become the famous Roman Catholic Cardinal Newman) had achieved first class honors in classics and mathematics at Oxford went to Dublin in 1827 to be private tutor to the household of Serjeant Pennefeather, a leading Irish lawyer. While there he met John Nelson Darby, a curate in the Church of Ireland and Pennefeather's brother-in-law. Darby had been meeting on Sundays with three other men, Dr. Edward Cronin, a convert from Roman Catholicism Francis Hutchinson, son of the Archdeacon of Killala, Sir Samuel Synge and John Gifford Bellet, a classics prizewinner from Trinity College, to "break bread" in a way they believed the early church did. Others began to join with them including, Lord Congelton, who hired an auction room for their growing Sunday meetings.

Plymouth Brethren On this page: Overview The Plymouth Brethren, or simply "Brethren," began around 1827 by four individuals in Ireland came together to worship by themselves since they had difficulties with the "professed" churches of the day. They did not see the Scripture for the doctrines of the churches around them, and therefore began preaching this to other individuals. Many "gatherings" grew up throughout the United Kingdom, with the most well-known group being founded in Plymouth, England, from which the name "Plymouth Brethren" is given. The Brethren are known for simplicity in meeting and a "non-denominational" approach to their church; they are, however, best known for the origin in John Darby of the dispensational/premillennial belief system, incorporated today in Evangelical thought. Variants The Plymouth Brethren have had some division, notably over the nature of church discipline, whether a disciplinary action by one church was binding on all congregations or only those affected. The exclusive group, believing that the action was binding on all congregations has in its ranks the best known teachers, including John Darby; their position, however, led to more divisions, but most of those have been healed. The open group, believing that the action was only for those groups that were affected, are known more for their evangelism and such things. The Plymouth Brethren
Handbook of Denominations in the United States Frank S. Mead Abingdon Press, 1995
Plymouth Brethren is a widely used, but generally unofficial, designation for a loose grouping of churches with early nineteenth-century roots in the British Isles. Within these churches, the common terminology is simply Brethren or assemblies or Brethren assemblies. The name "Plymouth" will be heard in frequently in casual conversation, but never appears in advertising, on signs, or in church bulletins. Outsiders combined the two words when the 1,000 member congregation in Plymouth, England, attracted notice with its active evangelism. In Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries, the word "Christian" has gradually replaced "Plymouth" for governmental purposes, but this change is less advanced in the U.S. The matter of names is a sensitive issue among Brethren, reflecting an historical emphasis on the unity of all believers. The movement arose in a highly sectarian age when closed Communion was practiced in most denominations. The early Brethren envisioned a basis for Christian unity - not in the ecumenical merging of denominations, but in forsaking denominational structures and names in order to meet simply as Christians, welcoming all who belong to Christ. The designation Plymouth Brethren in inconsisstent with this concept because it does not encompass all born-again Christians; the term Brethren by itself is not resented. The autonomy of the local congregation is another feature of the movement, coupled with the doctrinal understanding that a church is not a building, but the gathering of people who meet there.

The Plymouth Brethren
The following page includes three papers written by Miles J. Stanford on the subject of the Plymouth Brethren (PBs)both the Open and Closed varieties. The Plymouth Brethren (often known throughout the world as Assemblies or Gospel Halls) are a small groups of Christians with a deep and rich history. The PBs should not be confused with any "Brethren" out of the Continental Free Church tradition, (such as the Church of the Brethren, Brethren Church, etc.), nor the Arminian Pentecostal Assemblies of God. For decades, the PBs reached out with their various needs to brother Miles Stanford by telephone and letter, yet often in pride and denial that they could be helped or ministered to by someone "outside" their Assembly system. However, it is often only an outsider who is in a position to evaluated conditions as they truly are, rather than how insiders represent them to be. Miles' burden was always that the PBs would discover the rich legacy of Pauline Dispensationalism established by the original founders of the movement. The green titles above and below are links to specific articles.

(circa 1970) Miles J. Stanford The Little Flock Movement The late Watchman Nee was the Chinese founder and leader of the assembly-type movement named after the Brethren The Little Flock hymnalalthough it had no connection with the Plymouth Brethren movement. Having emerged in the early 1920’s, by 1950 there were some 200 assemblies established in China, with numbers of them spreading later into Taiwan and other parts of Asia. Nee sought to pattern the assemblies after the New Testament, and they turned out to be a combination of his extreme views, Darby’s closed views, Muller’s open views, and T. Austin-Sparks’ moderate views. The stress was on localityeach group an independent unit representing the Church in its particular area. In the larger cities, each assembly was to be in a different postal zone. Believers were required to attend the gathering in their particular home area or zone, none other. Like the Brethren, a number of the assemblies would congregate centrally from time to time for a weekend teaching conference. China being largely unevangelized, Nee formulated an extensive year-long program for training believers in evangelism and soul-winning. His further emphasis was that of growth based on the identification truths. His classic

THE BRETHREN WRITERS HALL OF FAME
Noted Biblical writers on dispensational lines - mostly of those known to the world as "Plymouth Brethren" and some others, persuaded that the theology they use is scriptural, including God's plan for Israel, and a credible scenario for all prophecy given by Scripture - it is to be taken literally wherever this is possible.
In 1827, or thereabouts, a small group of Christians met in Dublin, then part of the UK, in an attempt to return to New Testament simplicity. They took as their guide, not the creeds and religious traditions of the denominations around them, but rather by the Bible. Led by J.N.Darby, through many growing pains and some setbacks, their spiritual example is alive and growing today. These Christians have been called by many names - Plymouth Brethren being sometimes used. But their true allegiance remains to the Lord Jesus Christ, and they seek happy fellowship with all Christian brethren who love the Lord and seek to follow His word and example. Below are some works of these brethren and others who also hold dispensational doctrine to be the only true way of interpreting Scripture.
