107. Pantheism
pantheism. A definition of pantheism. To lay the preliminary groundwork we need to establish what is pantheism. The main tenets of pantheism.
http://www.tecmalta.org/tft131.htm
Pantheism A definition of Pantheism To lay the preliminary groundwork we need to establish what is pantheism. By its very etymology the term Pantheism signifies that the universe (everything - pan - that exists) is God, and God is the universe. This is both the popular idea attached to the term and also a formal definition often given of it. The aggregate of individual things is God. The three principal forms in which Pantheism is propagated and taught is as follows: 1. That which ascribes to the Infinite and Universal Being, the attributes (to a certain extent at least) of both mind and matter, namely, thought and extension. 2. That which ascribes to it only the attributes of matter, what we may call materialistic Pantheism. 3. That which ascribes to it only the attributes of spirit, or idealistic Pantheism. The main tenets of Pantheism It may readily be assumed then that Pantheism holds the following: The Infinite God has no existence before or out of the world. The world is, therefore, not only consubstantial, but co-eternal with God. The created order is identified with God; God, matter and whatever else there is are taken together in one lump, mixed together and referred to as one entity. An distinction between Maker and made things cease to exist because they are all one and the same. Naturally such a stance precluded the idea of creation. At best the biblical doctrine of creation is relegated to something far different: some Pantheists maintain that whatever is is an eternal and necessary process. (Modern Process Theology comes under the same indictment since it depicts God as changing and progressing).

Short Definition of Pantheism.
©Walter Mandell 1998 Pantheism is a religious philosophy that holds there is no supernatural
God(s); but rather, that the universe as a whole, possesses attributes
traditionally attributed to divinity, such as: power, magnificence,
grandeur, and omnipresence. Pantheists regard the universe itself as sacred. It is all that is, was,
and ever will be. Pantheists seek to feel, know, and celebrate its
sacredness: through love and other profound human experiences, through
deep contact with the natural world, through the arts and sciences, and
through ethical action; but not through revealed doctrine, saviors,
intermediaries, or holy writ. Many pantheists regard life - the most wondrous of the universe's
manifestations - as especially sacred, and so try to follow an ethic
of compassion and planetary stewardship. Walter is active on World Pantheist Movements email list and proposed this def of Panteism to use when we want a short descriptions on our view of Scientific Pantheism. Naturally, I've asked Walt's permission to have it

Pantheism
Pantheism holds that God is in the world or, rather, God is the world. It stresses the immanence of God in the world. There are several kinds of pantheism. The Greek philosopher Parmenides is famous for explicating what is known as absolute pantheism . This asserted that there was only one being in the universe and everything else was non-being. Another ancient source, Plotinus, was believed to be an exponent of emanational pantheism, in that everything flows from God the way a flower unfolds from a seed. The most obvious example of this kind of thought in the contemporary climate is Hinduism, a manifestational pantheism; that all things are, in some sense, divine and to be venerated as such. Pantheism
Pantheism: A History by Paul Harrison Pantheism is the belief that the universe and nature are divine. Every religion has had its pantheists. Pantheism is the perennial religion, which continually emerges from all transcendental or idealist religions. In addition people in every religion have seen God in nature, whether they formally express that identity or not. Examples include Shaftsbury, Rousseau, and many poets from Wordsworth to Robinson Jeffers. Pantheism has taken many diverse forms. Strict or scientific pantheism holds that God and the material universe are identical. Its first adherents were the Greek materialist Heraclitus, the Chinese Taoist Chuang Tzu, and the Stoic philosopher Zeno of Cittium. Later proponents have included the Christian David of Dinant, the neo-Confucian Chang Tsai, and the author of these pages, Paul Harrison. Taoism is a form of materialist pantheism, as are some types of Mahayan Buddhism. There have been many other types of pantheism. All of them identify God in some way with what is considered most fundamental in the Universe. Some pantheisms are idealistic or world-negating - believing that the visible world is unreal or an illusion, masking an underlying unity. These include the Eleatic school of Xenophanes and Parmenides, the Upanishads, and most schools of Mahayana Buddhism.

    Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909)
The Higher Pantheism in a Nutshell
One, who is not, we see: but one, whom we see not, is: Surely this is not that: but that is assuredly this.
What, and wherefore, and whence? for under is over and under: If thunder could be without lightning, lightning could be without thunder.
Doubt is faith in the main: but faith, on the whole, is doubt: We cannot believe by proof: but could we believe without?
Why, and whither, and how? for barley and rye are not clover: Neither are straight lines curves: yet over is under and over.
Two and two may be four: but four and four are not eight: Fate and God may be twain: but God is the same thing as fate.
Ask a man what he thinks, and get from a man what he feels: God, once caught in the fact, shows you a fair pair of heels.
Body and spirit are twins: God only knows which is which: The soul squats down in the flesh, like a tinker drunk in a ditch.
More is the whole than a part: but half is more than the whole: Clearly, the soul is the body: but is not the body the soul?

  • numerology : This belief is based on the truth that numbers (like words) bear powerful symbolic meanings. Numerology pushes this so far as to claim that the number itself bears the actual power of the One (or Force) that lies behind the symbol. According to numerologists, if you know how to use the numbers, you know how to control that force. Those who dabble in the Jewish Qabbalah or are immersed in the Hal Lindsay method of interpreting Revelation and Daniel are heavily influenced by numerology. So are many gambling addicts and Powerball freaks.
