PANTHEISM The semi-Oriental mysticism of the Neoplatonists and the Logos doctrines of the Stoics alike influence early Christian doctrine, and the pantheistic view i~ fopnd frequently in. medieval theology (e.g. in Erigena, Meister Eckhardt, Jakob Boehme). The Arabic scholar Averroes gave Aristotle to western Europe in a pantheistic garb, and thus influenced medieval scientists. So Bruno constructed a personified nature, and the scientific and humanistic era began. The pantheism of Spinoza, combining as it did the religious and the scientific points of view, had a wide influence upon thought and culture. Schelling (in his Identity-philosophy) and Hegel both carried on the pantheistic tradition, which after Hegel broke up into two lines of thought, the one pantheistic the other atheistic. From the religious point of view there are two main problems. The first is to establish any real relation between the individual and God without destroying personality and with it the whole idea of human responsibility and free will: the second is to explain the infinity of God without destroying his personality. In what sense can God be outside the world (see DEIsM): in what sense in it (pantheism)? The great objection to pantheism is that, thiugh ostensibly it magnifies the Creator and gets rid of the difficult dualism of Creator and Creation, it tends practically to deny his existence in any practical intelligible sense. See, further, ThEIsM; DEISM; ATHEIsM; ABSOLUTE.

Pantheism
Pantheism is a very simple belief. It holds that the divine is immanent in the living world. Everything is divine, and the divine is everything. The name derives from Green pan- (all, or universal) and theos (god).
Pantheism does not require any particular rituals, though one can have them if desired. Nor is it necessary to evoke the divine through separate deities, since the divine is already present in everything, including ourselves. What pantheism requires is a respect for the divine quality of nature, of the living world. It is perhaps the most "earth" Earth Religion, and particularly close to Green beliefs.
By: John Norris
What Pantheism believes.
At the heart of pantheism is reverence of the universe as divine and for the natural earth as sacred.
When we say THE UNIVERSE IS DIVINE we are not talking about a supernatural being. We are talking about the way our senses and our emotions force us to respond to the overwhelming mystery and power that surrounds us.
We are part of the universe. Our earth was created from the universe and will one day be reabsorbed into the universe.

Pantheism , simply stated, means " God is All ". It is the view that everything is of an all encompassing God . More detailed definitions tend to emphasize the idea that natural law, existence and/or the universe (the sum total of all that is was and shall be) is personified in the theological principle of 'God'. One way to describe certain interpretations of pantheism is to say "you are to God , as an individual blood cell in a your vein is to you." While a cell may be aware of its own environs, and even has some choices ( freewill ) between right and wrong (killing a bacteria , becoming cancerous, or perhaps, just doing nothing, among countless others) it has little conception of the greater being of which it is a part. This conception of God can be seen as included within Brahman Hinduism . It is important to note, however, that not all modern interpretations of pantheism would find this analogy meaningful, and for that matter, not even all pantheists believe in free will . This is indicative of a wide diversity of pantheist belief which will be explored throughout this article. Pantheism is often attacked as tautology by atheists, since it appears to many of them to do little more than re-define the word 'God' to mean '

    Naturalistic Pantheism
Naturalistic Pantheism is the belief in a unconscious, non-sentient universe, which while being holy and beautiful, is only seen as being a God in an extremely non-traditional impersonal sense. Naturalistic Pantheism might best be understood through the teachings of Spinoza and Taoism historically, and the Universal Pantheist Society (UPS) and the World Pantheist Movement (WPM) today. Although the UPS is the older of the two, it has seen decreased activity in recent years. The WPM (founded by former UPS vice-president Paul Harrison), on the other hand, has expanded considerably due to its promotion of 'Scientific Pantheism', which many critics submit is essentially nothing more than " atheism for nature lovers". This charge seems to stem from the fact that 'scientific pantheism' is not only naturalistic, but avowedly materialistic as well, with little tolerance for any reference to traditional theological concepts. Despite a history of controversy ignited by the WPM's appearance as sect within the UPS and its eventual seccession from that organization, the WPM approach has met with some acceptance, even while it may not actually constitute any strict pantheism. Although the Universal Pantheist Society ostensibly accepts pantheists of all varieties, in practice, it too tends toward the 'modern' (naturalistic) pantheism. To understand this, it must be re-emphasized that the theological concept which the term 'pantheism' was originally intended to describe (the equivalence of the traditional God concept with nature) is considered to be essentially obsolete by many contemporary members of the Naturalistic pantheist community, whose intent in describing themselves as 'pantheist' is chiefly to identify themselves as adherents of a naturalistic spirituality by using an established term. Opponents of naturalistic pantheism and adherents of

In my search for information about the symbolism of the Phoenix myth I came across a site about "Phoenix Pantheism". I quote here a definition of pantheism, which I identify with to a very large extent. The fascinating synchronicity between this site and my life is the combination of my most basic philosophy in life (pantheism) with one of the most important symbols in my life (the Phoenix). Most fascinating however I found the choice of bird representing the Phoenix: the African Gray Parrot ( see below

w3.trib.com/~phxcon/ORIGIN.html "The Pantheist philosophy / religion is a concept and viewpoint that is thousands of years old with its origin dating back as far as 11,000 years ago within the concept of the Hindu religion. Pantheism has grown and evolved continually since it s beginning; it is dynamic and constantly changing. Its most basic form is found in the Hindu sacred text of the Bhagavad-Gita , but Modern Pantheism is not bound to that document. There are many different conceptual views of Pantheism in the current era. Some support the idea that Modern Pantheism is atheistic; others disagree. The Conservancy of the Phoenix philosophy of Pantheism is that Pantheism is not atheistic, but that it is a philosophy that is dynamic and extends beyond the Judeo-Christian concept of 'God.' Phoenix Pantheism is atheistic only in the sense that it does not limit its philosophy to the Judeo-Christian view of 'God.'"

Existence is the ontological topic par excellence. Above all it is an idea. In Anglo-American philosophy (this article will have to be augmented with summaries of work in other traditions), probably the most widely-asked question about it is what sort of concept it is, or what function it serves in languages, both natural and formal. Another significant topic, related to the first, but somewhat less discussed, is whether 'existence' or 'exists' can be analyzed or defined or otherwise explicated, and if so, what the explication might be. (For further discussion, see the existence of physical objects.)

Pantheism, - from the Greek pan - "all"; and theos , "God" - is the doctrine that this material world is no different from God, that "all (this is) God". The universe , and all beings in it, are the real manifestation or transformation of God This was an idea developed by the ancient Greek school of philosophy known as Stoicism (founded by Zeno of Citium (335-263 B.C.E.), who lectured from a porch - "stoa" - hence the name of his school). In a curious presaging of modern quantum physics, the Stoics asserted that the entire cosmos was made from one element, fire (= energy). God was of the nature of subtle fire, and the physical fire, from which the rest of the elements formed, was a condensation of God's being. Thus, the whole cosmos is the condensation of God, "in whom we live and move and have our being". (Later, Paul of Tarsus was to take this Stoic saying out of context and apply it to his Christianity Another famous pantheist was the seventeenth century Spanish Jewish-born philosopher Baruch Spinoza , who in his Ethics , argued that there is only one reality, one universal substance, that he called " God ", and that mind and matter (as elaborated in Descartes
