Introduction to Metaphysics / Philosophy of Pantheism
Pantheism (meaning All is God) offers a positive ecological philosophy to our current destructive and isolated world. Pantheism is the religious belief in the divinity of Nature and that we humans are part of the One, interconnected whole. It is in realising our connection to the One Universe (Nature, God, Brahman, Tao, Space) that we find truth, spiritual fulfillment and solace. The pantheist philosopher Spinoza

The concept that God is immanent in all things is one of the oldest intuitions found in humankind. However, pantheism never developed into a formal doctrine. The earliest evidence of pantheism is found on Brahmanism, the oldest existing religion, in the Vedas, dating back to 1000 BC. It is associated with the Egyptian religion when Ra Isis and Osiris were identified with all existence. Many philosophical scholars think the great Greek philosopher Parmanides was a pantheist as well as Plotinus, Erigen, and Spinoza. The sentiment or belief in pantheism have predominantly influenced the thoughts and works of many poets, philosophers, mystics, and extremely spiritual people. Notably among pantheistic poets are Goethe, Coleridge, Wordsworth and Emerson. Many modern poets consider pantheism existing in their world-view. A.G.H.

by Maia Bhojwani Among the Millet and published in The Week Essays in Criticism (Series I) The Dread Voyage and Other Poems Lyrics of Earth Despite the nostalgia evident in this recreation of an archaic, Arcadian and mythic past, A rationalistic approach to nature tempers their treatment of mythological subjects and differentiates them from writers as committed to the use of myth as Isabella Valancy Crawford. Yet the major influences upon their work, which include the Romantics and the American Transcendentalists, were often understood in the conventional terms of nineteenth-century interpretations of mythology and the poets led to experiment with indigenous forms of myth-making in keeping with the theories of contemporary mythographers. The implications of these ideas for the Canadian poets vary, from their obvious application to a poetic sort of nature-worship, to a more serious consideration of the direction the literature of a relatively new nation should take. I shall consider these ideas as a possible background for the patterns of imagery which occur in their studies of landscape, with special reference to Carman, Roberts, Lampman and Campbell, who matured under similar influences during the formative years, in the 1880s. Scott started writing almost a decade later (just as Crawford began a decade earlier) and the mythographers have little direct bearing upon his Indian experience.

Pantheism and Deism
Just wanted to say that Pantheism isn't just thinking nature is god, it's more the believe that the Universe is god. Believing that people would also be god is not a 'request' for pantheism. And I also need to disappoint you with the fact that Pantheism isn't New Age (at least, in your description of New Age) Also, saying that Pantheism is without reason isn't right as well (I am pantheist because of reason) Overall, Pantheism is the definition of people who believe in that the universe is divine, it's therefore more an extension to Deism.

The Netherlands - Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at 07:31:33 (PDT) Thanks Atresica. Referring to New Age Religion from http://www.religioustolerance.org/ in their article that listed New Age beliefs: "Pantheism: All that exists is God; God is all that exists. This leads naturally to the concept of the divinity of the individual, that we are all Gods. They do not seek God as revealed in a sacred text or as exists in a remote heaven; they seek God within the self and throughout the entire universe." Pantheism is not an extension of Deism but the polar opposite of Deism. Nobody said a pantheist is without reason but New Age religion is a rejection of reason in favor of "inner feelings" whatever that amounts to. Pantheism goes back to the ancient Greek Stoics and is a forerunner to Deism says Leo Rosten's

Frequently Asked Questions about Scientific Pantheism
1. What is pantheism?
Pantheism comes from the Greek words pan "all, everything, whole" and theos "God". In its traditional form, this embodies the doctrine that everything is God, or at least that God is manifested through everything, Itself being immanent in all of Its creatures and/or objects. However, "God" doesn't have the meaning we usually give the word in a Judeo-Christian context. This "God" is not a personal entity who cares for us and watches our every step and punishes or rewards us after we die. This one is a force or quality that we identify as divine.
2. That's mystical bullshit.
OK, that's not a question, but it deserves an answer. Mystics of all religions have experienced communion with the All. One may or may not believe these were real; I think they were mental illusions, but they prove we have the capability to visualize an all-encompassing force. For those who assume naturalism, this force must be a manifestation of our mind, working through physical processes; it's a state we can reach and implies nothing weird or New-Agey. Others believe this force is separate from matter/energy, although human beings can grasp it. These are two distinct philosophical doctrines: monism (one substance, matter) and

Socinianism - A forerunner to Modern Pantheism
by Albert E. Johnson
The Encyclopedia Britannica (Macro Edition) says the word "Pantheism" first appeared in 1705 in a book by a noted Irish Deist, John Toland entitled "Socinianism Gladly Told." Obviously he must have viewed the reference favorably but why? The same source and most dictionaries say the word "Socinian" comes from the work of two Italian theologians in mid-16th Century named Laelius, and nephew Fausus Socinus, who had concluded that the natural world and God were one and the same; that God was not some imaginary authority the Bible suggests who acts upon all human affairs for moral guidance. We can suppose, as present-day pantheists do, that these two members of the Catholic clergy realized that the agency they had been thought to be God is actually the natural world in its entirety for without it nothing else on planet Earth can exist, not even ideas. It is only logical to suspect that any biological organism is not something man could have created, so it must be God who is said in Genesis 1 by whoever wrote that chapter that: "In the beginning God created the Universe" and all that there is on planet Earth. Or would the universe even have existed? Where the Bible becomes confusing is where it anthropomorphizes God as a thinking human being, ignoring altogether that natural creation is an ongoing, developing process of evolution of all species. Awareness of the fallacy of anthropomorphism since the Age of Enlightenment is a cause of great concern among all theologians today.

Do you believe that humans should be a part of Nature, rather than set above it? If you can answer yes to all of these questions, then you have pantheistic leanings. Are you sceptical about a God other than Nature and the Universe?

Panentheism
The Universal Pantheist Society Pantheism and Panentheism by Harold Wood
As the two letters in this issue indicate, there is sometimes confusion about the two different strains of pantheist philosophy. It is also important to note that the Universal Pantheist Society's bylaws strictly prohibit the Society from imposing any particular interpretation of religion or subscription to any particular religious belief, doctrine, or creed. This is one of our guiding principles because freedom of belief is inherent in the Pantheist tradition. Pantheism is not something which can be dogmatically defined like most other world religions or philosophies. Such an approach leads of course to a diversity of viewpoints as it should be, and which is why this Pantheist Society is an "Universal" one. We have a huge variety of beliefs and opinions among our members; many different from one another, but all of which provide insights which are valuable to one another, and all of which point to one consistent direction in looking toward the natural world for our source of spiritual enrichment. If critics finds a duality or "doublespeak" in our writings, it is simply a reflection of these principles.
It is undeniable that strict "Pantheism" differs from a similar religious philosophy, known as "panentheism". The Society has strived to be open to persons of both persuasions; but perhaps not all persons of one emphasis or the other will remain comfortable with our willingness to accept people with differing beliefs.

Welcome to The Universal Pantheist Society! Are You a Pantheist? Pantheists are persons who derive their fundamental religious experience through their personal relationship with the Universe. They feel that Nature is the ultimate context for human existence, and seek to improve their relationship with the natural world as their fundamental religious responsibility. Religion is seen as a system of reverent behavior toward the Earth rather than subscription to a particular creed. Because Pantheists identify God with Nature rather than an anthropomorphic being, Pantheists oppose the arrogant world-view of anthropocentrism. This web site contains a collection of materials about Pantheism and Pantheists. About the Universal Pantheist Society Despite a long religious history, dating back beyond Spinoza to the Stoics of ancient Greece and the philosophers of ancient India, there has been no modern organization to represent Pantheists until the formation of the Universal Pantheist Society in 1975. The Universal Pantheist Society is the oldest known organization dedicated to modern and ethical Pantheism. Today, the need for an ethical Pantheism has never been greater. The formation of the Universal Pantheist Society was based on the need to communicate an informed, modern Pantheism, and to provide for sharing among Pantheists.

PANTHEISM
Pantheism is the doctrine that the universe conceived of as a whole is God and, conversely, that there is no God but the combined substance, forces, and laws that are manifested in the existing universe. The cognate doctrine of panentheism asserts that God includes the universe as a part though not the whole of his being. The adjective pantheist was coined by the rationalist freethinker John Toland in his book Socinianism Truly Stated (1705). The noun pantheism was first used a few years later by one of Toland's opponents. K.C.F. Krause introduced the term panentheism in 1828 as a designation for his own philosophy. Both of these terms have been applied retrospectively to aspects of numerous philosophical traditions, both Eastern and Western. There are several discernible types of pantheism, ranging from those that attribute consciousness to nature as a whole (panpsychism) to those that interpret the world as merely an appearance and ultimately unreal (acosmic pantheism), and from the rational Neoplatonic, or emanationistic, strain to the intuitive, mystical strain. A mingling of these types characterizes Hindu and Buddhist doctrines; pantheism of one form or another is deeply rooted in the Vedas, the Upanisads, and the Bhagavadgita. Numerous Greek philosophers, notably Xenophanes, Heracleitus, Anaxagoras, Plato, Plotinus, and the proponents of Stoicism, contributed to the foundations of Western pantheism.

Pantheism seems to be the natural "religion" for Heretics; if religion it can be called. It is of course, an "Ideology" older than Paganism; and its tenets have been present, in the background, since the beginning of consciousness in mankind. The order of Pantheism I have aligned myself with is "Scientific Pantheism". Not because I have been converted or felt a need to have an affiliation with a religion, but because it reflects MY beliefs. This is MY ideology. Some one was just kind enough to name it for me. Thanks Paul :) Most of its members feel the same way and that is its great appeal. Knowing there are people of like mind out there, is good feeling. Among our numbers are Scientists, Heretics, Pagans, Wicca, Buddhists, Taoists, Atheists, Naturalists, Unitarians, and even Ex-Catholics and Ex-Jews. Planetary nebula NGC 6543, shells and jets of gas ejected from the death throes of a star one thousand years ago. Photo: J.P. Harrington and K.J. Borkowski, Hubble Space Telescope, NASA. The Tao te Ching is the oldest scripture of Taoism. It was composed during the warring states period when China descended into a chaos of rival kingdoms, some time between the sixth and the fourth or third centuries BC. It was supposedly written by Lao Tan, a possibly mythical figure, said to have lived till he was 160 or 200 years old. The classical Chinese historian Ssuma Chien says the work was by Li Erh, a custodian of imperial archives from the state of Ch'u in southern China, in the present province of Honan. This was a fertile, well-watered state. "Its people make little exertion, delight in life, and neglect to store anything." Li Erh was no seeker after fame. "The chief aim of his studies was how to keep himself concealed and remain unknown." says Ssuma Chien. Li Erh wrote his ideas only because, as he was heading into retirement, the royal gatekeeper pleaded with him to record his ideas before he disappeared into oblivion. He may have written the book under the pseudonym Lao Tan to avoid attention.

Pantheism
General Information Pantheism is the belief that everything is divine, that God is not separate from but totally identified with the world, and that God does not possess personality or transcendence. Pantheism generally can be traced to two sources. The first is the Vedic tradition (Hinduism), which begins with the belief that the divine principle from which everything arises is a unity and that the perception of multiplicity is illusory and unreal. In the Vedanta, Brahman is the infinite reality behind the illusory and imperfect world of perception. Our knowledge is imperfect because we experience subject and object as distinct. When subject and object are equated, however, all distinctions are eliminated and we know Brahman. In the Western tradition the cosmology of the Stoics and, more importantly, the emanationist hierarchy of Neoplatonism tend toward pantheism. In Judeo - Christian thought the emphasis on the transcendence of God inhibits pantheism. Nevertheless, a form of pantheism is found in the thought of the medieval scholastic John Scotus Erigena, who viewed the universe as a single, all - inclusive system with various simultaneous stages. The most important modern version of pantheism is that of Baruch Spinoza. For him nature is infinite, but because the only being capable of genuine infinity is God, God must be identical, in essence, with nature. In the 18th and 19th centuries the various forms of Idealism sometimes tended toward pantheism, often in the form of a theory of cosmic evolution.

The earth is sacred
When we say the cosmos is divine, we mean it with just as much conviction, emotion and commitment as believers when they say that their god is God.
But we are not making a vague statement about an invisible being who is beyond proof or disproof. We are talking about our own emotional responses to the real universe and the natural earth. When we say "That tree is beautiful," we are not saying anything about the tree in itself, but about the way we feel we must respond to the tree. We are talking about the

The Shape of the Next Religion Douglas Muder Go to a non-hypertext version of this essay. Modern America, like Rome at the time of Christ, is in a period of rising secularism and religious chaos. Christianity has lost the power to shape our culture, and no rival religion or philosophy seems able to take its place. I argue that this period of tension will end as the Roman one didwith the advent of a new religion that will synthesize the best features of our current religions into a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Waiting for the Unknown God
The Athenian citizens who gathered on Mars Hill to listen to Paul talk about "the unknown God" had little reason to be optimistic about the future of religion. Or rather, they had little reason to be optimistic about the future of any of the religions they knew about. Neither do we. But does that mean that there will never again be a dominant religion? Why None of the Contenders can become Champion
Almost all of the religions currently contending for dominance in America can be placed in one of the following four categories: historical monotheism, Scientism, Eastern religions, and Earth-centered religions. None of them is in a position to pick up the baton that Christianity has dropped. Predecessors of the Next Religion
At any given point in history there is a central metaphor , a field of thought which provides the images and vocabulary for a culture's religious expression. This field of thoughtbe it hunting, agriculture, politics, or physicsmay have no explicit religious content of its own, but the images and concepts that it provides have a profound effect on the religion of its time.
