Gothic Paganism
- an Introductory Essay
Gothdom embraces all religions, all denominations and all races, but it is not a religious movement. Many Goths are atheists and a sizable minority are new age spiritualists, Wiccans or pagans, Thelemites, and members of other alternative religious groups. Basically Goth is not about religion, but with the imagery of religion. Modern neo-pagans follow a path based on the ancient agrarian traditions of pre-Christian Europe. Many have the Great Mother Goddess and Her son/consort the Horned Lord as central deities. Pagans look to the Old Religion, folk practices and customs of times gone by. There they find a faith rooted in the natural world, in the cycles of the seasons and the phases of the moon. Why then gothic Paganism? Most (though by no means all) neo-pagans - from Druids to Church of All Worlds grokk-ers to eco-feminists - come from the baby-boom generation. Their `rainbow' approach to life carries over, creating a pagan path that focusses on the summer side of the year and the light side of the Wheel. This has earned the derogatory nickname of `Bambi Wicca'. That sunny mode also serves as a protective coloration of sorts; many in the mundane world still unfairly view pagans as satanic baby-killers Yet with the gothic emphasis on darkness, combining a gothic outlook with the standard pagan path does not always flow naturally. When a goth first experiences the pagan scene they may feel they do not quite fit in entirely. Goths carry a darkness which is not evil, but rather melancholy and mysterious. This can be jarring when combined with the celebratory, tie-dyed outlook of the `average' neo-pagan.

    What is Neopaganism?
Neopagan religions are modern forms of ancient Pagan religions, which may have been evolving since ancient times, or may have been recreated in modern times. Neopagan religions are usually polytheistic, nature-oriented, non dogmatic, and oriented toward personal growth through direct interaction with the Gods and Goddesses.
    Why Hellenic Neopaganism?
Hellenic Neopagans worship the Gods and Goddesses of ancient Greece and Rome. Although some of us are Greek or of Greek descent, many of us come from other ethnic backgrounds, yet we consider ourselves Hellenic (or Graeco-Roman) Neopagans. The first reason is that Graeco-Roman culture is one of the foundations of Western culture and even of modern world culture; therefore from a cultural standpoint, as Shelley said, "We are all Greeks." The second reason is that in the early years of the Christian era, the term "Hellene" was used to refer to any Pagan, regardless of their ethnic background, so in this FAQ I will use "Hellenic Neopagan" to refer to a modern follower of any of the Greek or Roman traditions. (Some us refer to our religion by names such as Olympianism, Classical Neopaganism, etc.)

    Hellenic Neo-Paganism
    "We are all Greeks"
Many Neo-Pagans were awakened to the old gods by an early encounter with Greek mythology, yet now they follow other traditions. In this paper I will try to clarify several issues that may deter Neo-Pagans from the Hellenic path. A connection with the Earth is an essential part of Paganism, both Neo- and Paleo-, and thus many Neo-Pagans look to their ethnic roots as a source of spirituality, but I think that ethnicity can be construed too narrowly. It's a mistake to reject the Hellenic path simply because you're not of Greek descent. Hellenic culture is a major component of the substratum of all European culture. It is worth recalling that by 327 BCE Alexander had carried Hellenic culture nearly to the Ganges and to the north of the Himalayas (and, of course, brought Eastern culture back to Greece, for his goal was a multi-ethnic society). The conquest of Greece by Rome was complete by 146 BCE, but in its defeat Greek culture conquered the Romans. It then spread with the Roman Empire, which by 44 BCE included the North African coast and extended north to the English channel; by 67 CE it included the south of England. Therefore the Hellenic tradition has been a part of the culture of Europe (and beyond) for at least 2000 years. To the extent that European culture has become Western culture, and Western culture has become world culture, the Hellenic tradition is ubiquitous. As Shelley quite rightly said, "We are all Greeks" (Preface to "Hellas").

    111. Waldorf-Enlivened Homeschooling
An information and family page from Terra So Luna's tribe. Included are book reviews, helpful hints for the elementary grades, why Waldorf fits perfectly with paganism, and calendarbased activities.
    http://hometown.aol.com/TerraSoLuna/index.html
Main Other Academic Interests htmlAdWH('7002737', '234', '60'); We began homeschooling over 10 years ago, when my oldest daughter, now 16, started Kindergarten. The first year, I used simple library books and workbooks that she enjoyed. By the time the next year came, I had done massive research and had purchased an Oak Meadow curriculum, on the advice in a book by a Christian woman who wasn't pleased with its overt pantheism...that critique sold me!! Erika enjoyed that year, and the next three, immensely. She then decided to go to public school for Fifth grade, and did quite well. She is very social, and is naturally intune with the particular learning style of the public schools.
I now have two sons that homeschool. They are 13 and 8. My two-year-old hangs around us, playing on his own or with the two little daycare boys I have daily. I decided to make a page of links and info that have helped our family. We find the Waldorf inspired daily rhythms and learning styles fit perfectly with our religion, Paganism, and the Wheel of the Year, or nature holidays that we celebrate. Many of the links and information presented are with that particular bias, since it is simply what I know and how we do things.
A mailing list especially for Waldorf Education Homeschoolers began about 8 months ago. If you are interested in this high volume, very interesting and helpful list, register at

I Had Been A Christian Pastor For 15 Years When I Found True Spirituality In Paganism
I wrote my story in an e-book entitled, " From Pastor to Pagan
Lest you think I'm one of those insignificant pastors who never got into real ministry, let me assure you I'm not. I was actually considered one of the top 10 preachers in my city and I pastored a church with an international umbrella organization.
This is why I have to remain in the closet for a while because of the repercussions of what I can reveal about Christianity and my particular involvement. I had left the ministry and I am currently pursuing my first love, which is writing.
Suffice it to say that who I am is not important, but what I had experienced in Christianity and why I embraced Paganism.
Christianity is not all what it professes to be. It is a religion that hides behind smoke and mirrors. For instance, Christianity is not the superior religion it tries to exude. I state several compelling reasons why and these are the cause of many a Christian's self-righteousness and intolerance of other religions.
Is the Bible the word of God, which Christians claim has the power to transform them? I emphatically say, "No," and the very evidence of this is the lack of transformation in the majority of Christians.

    Witchcraft, Wicca and Paganism
    Frequently Asked Questions
    Q.
Are Wicca and Witchcraft the same thing?
    A. Some say yes, and some say no. I suppose the only way to navigate this question safely is to point out what some may consider the main differences. In general, Wiccans feel free to review different belief systems, such as Celtic, Norse, Essene, Gnosis, or Shamanism, and then blend together any points that "feel" right into their own personal path. Pure Witchcraft on the other hand, may focus a little more tightly on using Magick and ritual to work with the elemental and spiritual forces in nature. Regardless, I feel the differences are slight in that Wicca and Witchcraft both work to achieve balance and harmony within nature and self.
Personally, I follow a predominately Celtic Witch/Tantric path. As time passes, I find myself increasingly drawing upon the wisdom and beliefs of other spiritual paths as my knowledge and understanding of them increases. So, when asked I'll tell you I'm a Witch, I also consider myself a Wiccan and perhaps part Shaman because I utilize and blend aspects of them all.
On the other hand, my ex-wife shares many of the same beliefs regarding the Creative Force of the universe and living in harmony with nature but she does not consider herself Wiccan, Witch or Shaman. Instead she prefers to call herself Christian but not in the conventional sense as she does follow the doctrine of the Bible, not the church's often biased and slanted interpretation of it.

Neopaganism, Feminism, and the New Polytheism
    by Norman L. Geisler
from the Christian Research Journal, Fall 1991, page 8. The Editor-in-Chief of the Christian Research Journal is Elliot Miller. In his best-selling book, Megatrends , social forecaster John Naisbitt noted "the widespread interest in Eastern religions" since the 1960s.[1] In the early 1970s Os Guinness, friend and colleague of the late Francis Schaeffer, provided an explanation for this interest: "The point is this: The East is still the East, but the West is no longer the West. Western answers no longer seem to fit the questions. With Christian culture disintegrating and humanism failing to provide an alternative, many are searching the ancient East."[2] An extensive network of Eastern-oriented groups make up much of what is called the "New Age movement." A leading promoter of this movement, Marilyn Ferguson, wrote in The Aquarian Conspiracy : "A leaderless but powerful network is working to bring about radical change in the United States....Broader than reform, deeper than revolution, this benign conspiracy for a new human agenda has triggered the most rapid cultural realignment in history. The great shuddering, irrevocable shift overtaking us is....a new mind the ascendance of a starting worldview...."[3]

    What Is Wicca
Contrary to what those who choose to persecute or lie about us wish to believe, Wicca is a very peaceful, harmonious and balanced way of thinking and life which promotes oneness with the divine and all which exists.
Wicca is a deep appreciation and awe in watching the sunrise or sunset, the forest in the light of a glowing moon, a meadow enchanted by the first light of day. It is the morning dew on the petals of a beautiful flower, the gentle caress of a warm summer breeze upon your skin, or the warmth of the summer sun on your face. Wicca is the fall of colorful autumn leaves, and the softness of winter snow. It is light, and shadow and all that lies in between. It is the song of the birds and other creatures of the wild. It is being in the presence of Mother Earths nature and being humbled in reverence. When we are in the temple of the Lord and Lady, we are not prone to the arrogance of human technology as they touch our souls. To be a Witch is to be a healer, a teacher, a seeker, a giver, and a protector of all things. If this path is yours, may you walk it with honor, light and integrity.
Wicca is a belief system and way of life based upon the reconstruction of pre-Christian traditions originating in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. While much of the information of how our ancestors lived, worshiped and believed has been lost due to the efforts of the medieval church to wipe our existence from history, we try to reconstruct those beliefs to the best of our ability with the information that is available.

    I AM A PAGAN
I am a Pagan. I am a part of the whole of Nature. The Rocks, the Animals, the Plants, the Elements, are my relatives. Other Humans are my sisters and brothers, whatever their races, colors, or sexual preferences. The Earth is my Mother and the Sky is my Father. The Sun and the Moon are my Grandparents, and the Stars my Ancestors. I am a part of this large family of Nature, not the master of it. I have my own special part to play and I seek to play that part to the best of my ability. I seek to live in harmony with others in the family of Nature, treating others with respect not abuse.

Defining Paganism: Paleo-, Meso-, and Neo- 2.5
Paganism is a general term for polytheistic religions old and new, with Pagan used as the adjective as well as the membership term. The overwhelming majority of all the human beings who have ever lived were or are Pagans, and we believe that there is an enormous wealth of spiritual insight and strength to be gained from following a Pagan path. There are three important points to be noted here, however:
    • Like the members of every other religious community, we Pagans have the right to define ourselves and to demand that our definitions, rather than (or in addition to) those invented by individuals and institutions hostile to us, be quoted or referenced when we are discussed by the mass media.
    • Pagan and Paganism deserve a capital letter,
    • Pagan/Paganism requires modifying prefixes or adjectives in order to communicate specific approaches, denominations or sects. The following are the ones I have settled upon over the last thirtyfive years:
Hinduism (prior to the influx of Islam into India)
