Koljada
(Kohl-YAH-da) - The Winter Solstice.
Most agree that the word comes from the Roman word "calendae" which meant the first 10 days of any month. Some, however, believe the word is derived from the word "Kolo" or wheel - much like the word "Yule" is an Anglo-Saxon word for wheel. The holiday's original name may have been "Ovsen". The holiday was filled with revelry. Processions of people masked like animals and cross-dressers roamed the village. Often they were accompanied by a "goat"- a goat's head, either real or (usually) made and stuffed on a stick. The person holding the "goat" would be covered by a blanket to play the part. Sometimes a child on horseback - symbol of the reborn sun - would accompany them; the horse was often played by two young men in horses costumes. One of the wenders would carry a spinning solar symbol, internally lit by a candle, on a stick. Later, after Christianity entered the scene, the spinning "sun" became a star.
This unusual group would stop and sing Koljada songs from house to house. These songs usually included invocations to "Koljada", the god or goddess of the holiday, praises and good wishes, requests for handouts and threats for refusal. The handouts, also called "koljada", usually took the form of little pastries or "korovki" shaped like cows or goats. The were sometimes just in the shape of the animals head, but often were described as having "horns and tails and everything." The korovki were traditionally baked by the old people in the house, the grandmothers and grandfathers.

Peter Kreeft
The most serious challenge for Christianity today isn't one of the other great religions of the world, such as Islam or Buddhism. Nor is it simple atheism, which has no depth, no mass appeal, no staying power. Rather, it's a religion most of us think is dead. That religion is paganism — and it is very much alive. Paganism is simply the natural gravity of the human spirit, the line of least resistance, religion in its fallen state. The “old” paganism came from the country. Indeed, the very word “paganism” comes from the Latin pagani, “from the fields” or “country-dwellers.” Country people were the last to be converted to Christianity during the Roman Empire, the last to abandon their ancestral roots in pre-Christian belief. Today, country people are the last to abandon Christianity for the “new” paganism, which flourishes in the cities. The old paganism was a far greater thing than the new. In fact, Chesterton brilliantly summarized the entire spiritual history of the world in this one sentence: “Paganism was the biggest thing in the world, and Christianity was bigger and everything since has been comparatively small.”

Neo-Paganism and the Church of All Worlds
Some Questions and Answers
(Part 1 of 2)
Questions: (End of Part 1 of questions.)
What is Neo-Paganism? Neo-Paganism is a revival and reconstruction of ancient Nature religions adapted for the modern world. It is a religion of the living Earth a religious motif especially appropriate to the Aquarian Age, as Christianity was the dominant religious motif of the Piscean Age. Neo-Paganism is a natural religion, viewing humanity as a functional organ within the greater organism of all Life, rather than as something special created separate and "above" the rest of the natural world. Neo-Pagans seek not to conquer Nature, but to harmonize and integrate with Her. Neo-Paganism should be regarded as "Green Religion," just as we have "Green Politics" and "Green Economics." Return to Questions Doesn't "Pagan" mean irreligious or heathen?

91. The Ancient Root Of Pagan Error - Part 1 Of 3
Traces the origins of modern paganism.
http://www.spiritwatch.org/paglie1.htm
the Spirit Watch The Ancient Root Of Pagan Error - Part 1 of 3 by Donalyn H. Vaughn O ne thing all the false religions (be it Wicca, Hinduism, or even the pseudo-Christian groups like Unity, and Mormonism) have in common is a great and singular lie that their beliefs are based on. This falsehood has been the essential basis upon which spiritual deception has sought to ensnare the unwary with throughout history. This lie led man into rebellion against the revealed will of God in the Garden of Eden, as the Genesis account reveals. This rebellion became literally the first sinful act of mankind. And it was patterned after Satan's own presumptuous rebellion against his Creator, the first known defiance of God's will. What was this very first sin? Satan thought he could be God. This got him kicked out of heaven. What did Satan use to get Eve to eat from that tree in the garden? The same lie. He told her that she would not die, and that she would become like God: Genesis 3:1-6: 1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Definition of Paganism
Paganism
Paganism, in the broadest sense includes all religions other than the true one revealed by God, and, in a narrower sense, all except Christianity, Judaism, and Mohammedanism. The term is also used as the equivalent of Polytheism (q.v.). It is derived from the Latin pagus , whence pagani (i. e. those who live in the country), a name given to the country folk who remained heathen after the cities had become Christian. Various forms of Paganism are described in special articles (e.g. Brahminism, Buddhism , Mithraism); the present article deals only with certain aspects of Paganism in general which will be helpful in studying its details and in judging its value.
I. CLAIMS OF PAGANISM TO THE NAME OF RELIGION
INFLUENCE ON PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LIFE
Nature Worship generally, and Agrarian in particular, were unable to fulfill the promise they appeared to make. The latter was to a large extent responsible for the Tammuz cult of Babylon, with which the worships of Adonis and Attis, and even of Dionysus, are so unmistakably allied. Much might have been hoped from these religions with their yearly festival of the dying and rising god, and his sorrowful sister or spouse: yet it was precisely in these cults that the worst perversions existed. Ishtar, Astarte, and Cybele had their male and female prostitutes, their Galli: Josiah had to cleanse the temple of Yahweh of their booths (cf. the Qedishim and Kelabim , Deut., xxiii, 17; II Kings, xxiii, 7; cf. I Kings, xiv, 24; xv, 12), and even in the Greek world, where prostitution was not else regarded as religious, Eryx and Corinth at least were contaminated by Semitic influence, which Greece could not correct. "Although the story of Aphrodite's love", says Dr. Farnell, "is human in tone and very winning, yet there are no moral or spiritual ideas in the worship at all, no conception of a resurrection that might stir human hopes. Adonis personifies merely the life of the fields and gardens that passes away and blooms again. All that Hellenism could do for this Eastern god was to invest him with the grace of idyllic poetry" ("Cults of the Greek States", II, 649, 1896-1909; cf. Lagrange, op. cit., 220, 444 etc.)

Acts 4:12
A Brief Examination of Paganism
By Pastor David L. Brown, Ph.D. A more encompassing term for witchcraft would be paganism. It has been called "man's first attempt at technology or his initial effort to gain control of his environment. Paganists chose certain people to be in charge of these efforts who were called shamans or Witch doctors. Shamans gave human names to natural forces and then would use various means to attempt to communicate with these environmental units. When the Shaman's efforts failed, he would inform his followers that the "gods" required or demanded a sacrifice or gifts. Confusion began during the middle ages when Paganism and Christianity met head on. There was a blending of beliefs in an attempt at compromise to keep the peace and encourage social acceptance. Many of the Pagan traditions in force in America today are easily identified by religion and philosophy dating back to Greek, Roman and Egyptian worship and beliefs. There is a difference however in religions which derive some sort of "divine revelation" and natural religions.

99. Paganism, Wicca, Polytheism, Nature Worship Religions Challenged
paganism, Wicca, Polytheism, Nature Worship religions challenged.
http://www.christian-faith.com/religion/pagans.html
A Challenge to Pagans I understand that paganism is a growing religious force in the world today. Also, there are quite a number of forms of paganism - Druidism, Wicca, Witchcraft just to name a few. Perhaps you feel that your rituals and other spiritual activities will help to save the Earth from self-destruction. You may distrust Christianity for quite a few reasons. You can't stand the doctrine of eternal punishment, and you probably feel that most Monotheistic religions, especially Christianity, are a hindrance to spiritual development. Most pagans are polytheists (they acknowledge and worship more than one god or goddess). You probably believe that these divine powers are within you and you need to get into harmony with them. You may be a Nature-Worshipper of some form. Some Preliminaries 1. Points we may have in common. a. We believe in the reality of a spiritual world that exists now in parallel with the physical universe. Many churches are spiritually dead - emphasizing "club rules" and not a personal encounter with the divine. But more and more churches are coming alive and are learning what it means to have a relationship with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has greater power than all the rest of the angels and demons combined. b. We believe that it is good for us to care for our environment. As a Christian, I believe that God gave us this world to look after and enjoy, but not to abuse. So I would sympathise with attempts to limit ecological destruction and the spread of pollution. In my view it is sinful to ruin the environment for personal or corporate profit. The Bible talks of God "destroying those who destroy the earth" (Rev. 11:18).
