U.S.A. The Pagan Federation was founded in 1971 (in Britain) to provide information, to counter misconceptions about Paganism and to work for the rights of Pagans to worship freely and without censure. To help accomplish this, the PF organizes members' only and public events, maintains personal contact with individual members and with the wider Pagan community, publishes a quarterly journal, Pagan Dawn, and holds an annual conference in London, UK, each November. The Pagan Federation International consists of all those regions lying outside of the United Kingdom, many of whom, like their UK counterparts, hold public gatherings throughout the year. The PF doesn't exist to promote any single path within Paganism, nor do we presume to represent all Pagans. Rather our members are drawn from all strands of Paganism, are at least 18 years of age, and subscribe to the Three Principles which give the Pagan Federation its common purpose and focus: Love for and Kinship with Nature. Reverence for the life force and its ever-renewing cycles of life and death.

PAGANISM
The words 'Paganism' and 'Pagan' come from the Latin 'paganus,' meaning 'country dweller. In simplest terms - Paganism is a religion of place, or a native religion, for example the Native American's religion is Pagan, Hinduism is a form of Paganism. All Pagan religions are characterized by a connection and reverence for nature, and are usually polytheistic i.e. have many Gods and/or Goddesses. Paganism is a religion of nature, in other words Pagans revere Nature. Pagans see the divine as immanent in the whole of life and the universe; in every tree, plant, animal and object, man and woman and in the dark side of life as much as in the light. Pagans live their lives attuned to the cycles of Nature, the seasons, life and death. Unlike the patriarchal religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism) the divine is female as well as male and therefore there is a Goddess as well as a God. These deities are within us as well as without us (immanent); they are us. They are not simply substitutes for the Muslim or Judeo-Christian God. This is because the Gods of the major religions tend to be super-natural i.e. above nature whereas Pagan deities are natural, symbolizing aspects of nature or human nature. Having said that God and Goddess are split from the Great Spirit or Akashka which probably equates to the God of the patriarchal religions. The Goddess represents all that is female and the God represents all that is male. But because nature is seen as female the Goddess has a wider meaning. Often called Mother Earth or Gaia she is seen as the creatrix and sustainer of life, the mother of us all which makes all the creatures on the planet our siblings.

Celebrating Paganism with Children!
Many children today learn about caring for the Earth at home and in school. The idea of saving the Earth is all around them in the media. In addition to those sentiments, contemporary Pagans also teach their children to celebrate the sacredness of the Earth. Play as a Way to the Sacred Play offers many ways to engage children in the sacred. Through play, learning is fun. Pagan and other Earth-centered religious traditions honor the playfulness and joy of the human experience as sacred. Children love to make music and it can give them a sense of the Divine creator in themselves. Learning to use rhythm instruments can foster that joy. Making rattles and other musical instruments can be fun projects for the whole family. The instruments can be used in worship as well as informal play. Chants are also common in worship and they are easy to learn. Sing with children anytime. Collections of stones, leaves, or any other curiosities, can provide the start of an altar. Memories of where an item was collected and how it was identified bring a sense of the mundane-as-sacred when "just a rock" is displayed in a place of pride.

What is Paganism?
Paganism is not new or unusual in our modern life. For many people it exists less as an active religion than as parts of our popular culture. Halloween costumes and treats, Christmas trees and mistletoe, Easter bunnies and eggs, maypole dances, harvest festivals and hundreds of other folkways began as Pagan practices. Modern-day Pagans seek to restore the religious context of these practices. Defining Paganism The origin of the word pagan is from the Latin paganus, meaning a country dweller. When cities were Christianized the people in the country continued to practice the old religions. The word pagan took on the meaning of "those folks out there in the sticks who still do all that old-fashioned stuff." Later it came to mean any member of an indigenous folk or tribal religion or anyone who was not "of the Book" (i.e., the Koran, Bible, Torah). Pagan religions originated in a time when people lived close to the land. Pagan theologies reflect an awareness of nature with its cycles of the seasons, as well as the cycles and seasons of human life. Such awareness is a common thread among Pagans today. Few modern Pagans can fully know or follow how our ancestors worshiped. Instead we invent and reinvent our religious practices, and even our beliefs, as we determine how they resonate with our contemporary lives. Some people prefer to use the word "Neopagan" to describe this form of modern Paganism.

History
The idea of reconstructionist Pagan religions has been around since at least the mid 1970s and is discussed in Margot Adler's 1979 edition of Drawing Down the Moon. Some organizations, like ADF, have been doing reconstruction work for many years, but their focus was never purely or particularly Celtic. Many individuals were in dialogue about what constituted genuine early Celtic religion and spirituality, and how to educate others about the differences between Wicca and the various forms of Celtic Paganism. These discussions initially took place in Pagan publications and around the fire at Pagan gatherings starting in the early 1980s. With the growth of the internet, dialogue on PODSnet Celtic, the GEnie network, Celtic-L and other online forums became the critical factor leading to a rapid spread of information after 1989. The phrase Celtic Reconstructionist (CR) began to gain common use during 1992 and 1993 to describe individuals who were trying to understand, research, and re-create an authentically Celtic path for modern Pagans.

Introduction
CHRISTMAS-DECEMBER 25 this is the day designated on our calendars and on our hearts as the day of Christ's birth. But is this really the day upon which Christ was born? Are today's customs during this season of Christian origin? Or is Christmas a result of a mixture between paganism and Christianity? This is a question that some will not even want to consider. Many have heard the rumor, many have thought through the question and justified the celebration of the holiday and many just plain don't want to hear about it. But please, give these facts some place in your mind so that you may know the truth and live accordingly. Return to Top Jump to Bottom
The Wrong Date
The word "Christmas" is not found anywhere in the scriptures of course, and, as we shall see, December 25 is definitely not the date on which Christ was born. It is evident that Jesus was not born during the middle of winter, for at the time of his birth, the shepherds were living out in the fields with their flocks. As the bible says: "There were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night" (

In simplest terms Paganism is a religion of place, or a native religion, for example the Native American's religion is Pagan, Hinduism is a form of Paganism. All Pagan religions are characterised by a connection and reverence for nature, and are usually polytheistic i.e. have many Gods and/or Goddesses. Modern Paganism as practised in the west is particular to the native peoples of the west and although there are many forms most are descended from Celtic origins. Modern Paganism or 'neo-Paganism' has the following characteristics: Paganism is a religion of nature, in other words Pagans revere Nature. Pagans see the divine as immanent in the whole of life and the universe; in every tree, plant, animal and object, man and woman and in the dark side of life as much as in the light. Pagans live their lives attuned to the cycles of Nature, the seasons, life and death.
