If you have a noteworthy web site that you would like to add please do so by selecting " Submit URL ." You will be guided to a form on which to submit your web site entry. Additionally, there is a set of instructions available from our Avatar Help section. As you search thru Avatar you will notice that some of the listings have a colored dot next to their title. THE DEMISE OF PAGANISM
BY JAMES J. O'DONNELL
Traditio
There exists a large, remarkably homogeneous literature on the conflict between paganism and Christianity in the last decades of the fourth century. This study is a preliminary attempt to re-examine that conflict and point out new lines for interpretation of familiar evidence. A redefinition of our conceptions of what paganism was at this period will be followed by a close study of the men and events around whom the traditional narratives of its last revivals have been constructed. A concluding section will outline the ways in which, according to the new definitions proposed here, paganism may be said to have survived its apparent destruction. This is only, to repeat, a preliminary study. It focuses chiefly upon the same relatively narrow body of evidence which has formed the core of previous studies of the subject, in an attempt to show how even that evidence is susceptible of some radically new interpretations. The ideas contained in this paper grew out of a long-standing fascination with Augustine's De civitate Dei and a desire to appreciate more precisely the polemical situation in which that work is to be understood. If the conclusions of this preliminary study have any merit, they will need to be refined and strengthened by further work on just such subjects as Augustine's monument of apologetic. It is to facilitate such work and to excite discussion that this paper is published now.

Darkest Greetings -
We are in the process of gathering information on the point of intersection between gothdom and the occult that has been called Gothic Paganism . Both of us, as you will see below, consider ourselves Gothic Pagans. We know what this term means to us - our own unique viewpoint - but we'd like to know if others who find themselves at this crossroads define it the same way. We have included a questionnaire touching on what we find to be definite elements of Gothic Paganism . These may dovetail nicely with your own beliefs, or we may not even be in the same crematoria. Either way, we'd like your input. We conducted an introductory workshop on Gothic Paganism at a major pagan festival (Starwood) last summer and plan to do more; this questionnaire is part of our research towards that goal. Therefore any feedback is most welcome. You probably know one of us through either the Gothic literary scene or through the Internet and alt.gothic; but you may not know the other. Or this could be the first you've heard from either of us. Therefore we'd like to introduce ourselves and explain our interest in Gothic Paganism . Terry Sindar is an active part of the literary gothic subculture, and follows what he considers a gothic/pagan path. He has studied various spiritual systems including the Tarot, Cabala, Enochian magic, and psychedelic shamanism. As a writer of gothic/pagan related fantasy, he has written for a number of gothic, fantasy, and pagan magazines. He was a founding member of the band "Minstrels of Enchantment" and is co-founder of the dark illusion sideshow act "Carnival Xaotika".

WHAT DO THE WORDS " PAGAN " AND " PAGANISM " MEAN?
What is a "Pagan?" Everybody has their favorite definition of "Pagan." Most people are convinced that their meaning is the correct one. But no consensus exists, even within a single faith tradition or religion.
Origin of the term:
There is general agreement that the word " Pagan " comes from the Latin word " paganus. " Unfortunately, there is no consensus on the precise meaning of the word in the fifth century CE and before. There are three main interpretations. None has won general acceptance: Most modern Pagan sources interpret the word to have meant " rustic ," " hick ," or " country bumpkin " a pejorative term. The implication was that Christians used the term to ridicule country folk who tenaciously held on to what the Christians considered old-fashioned, outmoded Pagan beliefs. Those in the country were much slower in adopting the new religion of Christianity than were the city folks. They still followed the Greek state religion, Roman state religion, Mithraism, various mystery religions, etc., long after those in urban areas had converted. Some believe that in the early Roman Empire, "

29. Iron Crosses: Pre-Christian History And Beliefs
A look at the history and folklore of Lithuania, one of three Baltic countries. Lithuania was the last pagan country in Europe to accept Christianity. This site is devoted to examining the history, folktales and beliefs of Pagan Lithuania. Topics such as Perkunas, Gabija, Zemyna, Saule and the various Grand Dukes (Mindaugas, Gediminas, Jogaila, Vytautas) are explored, along with the elements of Lithuanian paganism chthonic and indo-european.

ithuania, on the shore of the Baltic Sea, has had a very intriguing role in European development, in various ways: militarily, economically, politically and religiously. It was the last country to accept Christianity, in 1387, as part of the marriage agreement between Grand Duke Jogaila and Jadwiga, Queen of Poland. The new faith lived in conjunction with the old nature-based beliefs; and well into the twentieth century in certain regions. odern Lithuanians are an unusual amalgam of Catholicism and a fierce pride in their pagan past. Many will proudly state that Grand Duke Jogaila and his cousin Grand Duke Vytautas the Great defeated the Crusading Teutonic Order. The language was nearly wiped out when it was under the auspices of the Russian Empire But it endured, and to this day Lithuanians are fiercely protective of both their language and of their culture. This website is dedicated to exploring the history, culture, folktales, and folk beliefs of this most colourful country. Table of Contents zemyna@geocities.com

Paganism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Paganism is a catch-all term which has come to (by extension from its original classical meaning of a non- Christian religion ) bundle together a very broad set of potentially mutually incompatible religious beliefs and practices, usually, but not necessarily, characterized by polytheism and less commonly animism It is the current popular fashion to insist that many pagan religions are based on nature , which presupposes a universal division between "nature" and "not nature" that might not actually apply to all cultures and religions. Paganism predates modern monotheism , although its origins are lost in prehistory . Ancient paganism tended in many cases to be a deification of the political process, with "state divinities" assigned to various localities ( Athena in Athens , for example). Many ancient regimes would claim to be the representative on earth of these gods , and would depend on more or less elaborate bureaucracies of state-supported priests and scribes to lend public support to their claims. In one well-established sense, paganism is the belief in any non- monotheistic religion, which would mean that the Pythagoreans of ancient

Pagan book shop in Edinburgh Paganism describes a group of contemporary religions based on a reverence for nature. These faiths draw on the traditional religions of indigenous peoples throughout the world. Paganism encompasses a diverse community with some groups concentrating on specific traditions, practices or elements such as ecology, witchcraft, Celtic traditions or certain gods. Wiccans, Druids, Shamans, Sacred Ecologists, Odinists and Heathens all make up parts of the Pagan community. Whilst there are significant differences between these strands of Paganism, most Pagans share an ecological vision and involvement that comes from the Pagan belief in the organic vitality and spirituality of the natural world. Due to persecution and misrepresentation it is necessary to define what Pagans are not as well as what they are. Pagans are not sexual deviants, do not worship the devil (are not Satanists), are not evil, do not practice 'black magic' and their practices do not involve harming people or animals.

Harun Yahya examines the contribution of paganism and Hellenistic philosophy to fascism.

The Pagan Roots Of The Fascist Culture HARUN YAHYA Print article E-mail article Fascism is an ideology which has its roots in Europe. The foundations of fascism were laid by a number of European thinkers in the 19th century, and it was put into practice in the 20th century by such European counties as Italy and Germany. Other countries which were influenced by fascism and adopted it 'imported' the ideology from Europe. So in order to examine the roots of fascism, we must turn to the history of Europe. European history has naturally gone through many stages and periods. But looking at it in the broadest sense, we can divide into three fundamental periods from the cultural point of view:
  • The pre-Christian (pagan) period. The period when Christianity assumed cultural dominance in Europe The post-Christian (materialist) period
  • The idea of what we have described as 'The post-Christian period' may strike many readers as odd. Because Christianity is still by far the majority religion in European society. But many ideologies and philosophies opposing Christianity, materialist philosophy being the most important, had become increasingly influential by the 19th century.
