3. The Hallowing of England
If the times are sorrowful on earth, then once more we must turn to that glorious host of English people, dwelling in the love of Christ, in the Kingdom of Heaven, and to him who stands at their head St. George - the Great-Martyr and Patron-Saint of England, but of him let the late Poet Laureate, John Masefield speak: And is it not this simple, hallowed England, this home of homes, this wooden-steepled land, rich in old beauty, oaken and straw-thatched, many in her woods and fields, fragrant with wild flowers, the homely smell of the earth in her old churches, her country - lanes that wind and twist and meadows of dill, apple-orchards and beehives, distant hamlets and broad. ploughlands, old inns and home-love, fresh rains in April and ripe barley in August, the swallows flying on mellow summer evenings, and the old, rambling gardens, redolent of English lavender and sweet-william, the England of the English saints, is it not this which is the true spirit of England? But let that great Poet-Laureate of England speak once more - for he is more eloquent than I: 'I know no land more full of bounty and beauty than this red land, so good for corn and hops and roses. I am glad to have lived in a country where nearly everyone lived on and by the land, singing as they carried the harvest home, and taking such pride in the horses, and in the great cattle, and in the cider trees. It will be a happy day for England when she realises that those things and the men who care for them are the real wealth of a land: the beauty and the bounty of the Earth being the shadow of Heaven.

8. The Calendar of the Orthodox Church
For many years now there has been much strife throughout the Orthodox Church about the calendar. Let us therefore try to identify the real heart of this controversy. Since time immemorial man has, as the Psalmist says (Ps. 103, 21 and Ps. 135, 9-10), measured time by the sun and the moon. In this way there came into being solar and lunar calendars. Let us first look at some of the solar calendars: 1) The 'Astronomical' Solar Calendar 2) The Julian Calendar Also called the Church or old calendar. It was adopted by the Church at the First Oecumemcal Council in Nicea in 325. It is kept by the Russian, Serbian and Georgian Churches, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Fathers of Mt Athos and Mt Sinai, substantial minorities in Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and in the Diaspora. At present the civil calendar (see below) is 13 days ahead of the Church calendar. This is because the Church calendar measures a year as 365.25 days. 3) The Gregorian Calendar Also called the new or civil calendar. It was adopted in Rome in 1582 and subsequently by other countries. It is also inaccurate because it measures the year as 365.2425 days. However, it is more astronomically exact than the Julian calendar.

Eastern Orthodox Christianity: A Western Perspective > Customer Review #1: Good Start for Mainline Protestants

A good introduction to Orthodox Christianity from an enlighhtened Protestant position. Clendenin is neither too critical nor overly accepting in his overview. His viewpoint seems to be middle-of-the-road among protestants - neither Liberal or Conservative. I assume Clendenin himself is a Presbyterian from his comments in the prologue, but he doesnt spend alot of time talking about denominations. Clendenin has spent many years in Russia as a visiting professor, so he has has exposure both to the West and to Orthodoxy on its home turf.

The Faith: Understanding Orthodox Christianity: An Orthodox Catechism > Customer Review #1: A Great Place to Start

Clark Carlton has written an excellent cathecism of Orthodox dogma. This book is well written, up to date and it covers some of the most essential elements of Orthodox teaching. I would recommend this as one of the first books anyone interested in Orthodoxy should read. It is also a great place for Orthodox Christians who simply want to familiarize themselves with the basics.
The Faith: Understanding Orthodox Christianity: An Orthodox Catechism > Customer Review #2: Outstanding Introduction to the Orthodox Church This book is one in a series by author Clark Carlton. User comment on article: A Christian Boom
Submitted by Karen Silver November 26, 2002 at I agree with you that there is a basic disconnect between the more liberal Northern Christianity and the more "doctrinal" and "orthodox" Christianity of the South. This is true, not only in the US, but in the world as well. The Anglicanism of Africa is nothing like that of Europe or the Episcopal Church in the US. The Catholicism of the barrio is not the Catholicism of the US, or even the more intensely "Irish" church of the US. Even the Southern Baptists who live up North are less doctrinaire than those in Alabama.
I think the schism, when it occurs, will be more de facto (it already is that) than de jure.

The Second Vatican Council taught: "Catholics therefore are earnestly recommended to avail themselves of the spiritual riches of the Eastern Fathers which lift up the whole man to the contemplation of the divine. The very rich liturgical and spiritual heritage of the Eastern Churches should be known, venerated, preserved and cherished by all. They must recognize that this is of supreme importance for the faithful preservation of the fullness of Christian tradition..." Wise sayings from some of the Fathers of Orthodox Christianity.
O strange and inconceivable thing! We did not really die, we were not really buried, we were not really crucified and raised again, but our imitation was but a figure, while our salvation is in reality. Christ was actually crucified, and actually buried, and truly rose again; and all these things have been vouchsafed to us, that we, by imitation communicating in His sufferings, might gain salvation in reality. O surpassing loving-kindness! Christ received the nails in His undefiled hands and feet, and endured anguish; while to me without suffering or toil, by the fellowship

This is useful if only because without the whole picture
without knowing what the other choices are one cannot judge whether the choice under scrutiny is the best. This treatment is very different from descriptions of Orthodoxy that offer neither the framework of assumptions that gives rise to what is and is not believed nor the way it all coheres, not to speak of the phrónema or mind-set and atmosphere that pervade belief and practice alike. This treatment is quite unlike those that concentrate on polity (government) at the expense of belief as well as treatments that merely list beliefs without clarifying their interdependencies. Christ teaching the disciples COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this class is to provide a broad overview of the content, history and practice of our faith. What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in the 21st century? We will explore the Bible and look very specifically at the New Testament. We will look at the Liturgy and the sacramental life of the Church. Why do we worship the way we do? What does it all mean? We will look at Christian history through the centuries. Where did all of these different Christian denominations come from and how do we, as Orthodox Christians, relate to them? Who are we, anyway? In addition, we will discuss personal spiritual disciplines, stewardship, Christian moral values, the development of the virtues and faithful living. No question is off limits. St. Paul’s is a good place to explore what it means to be a believer, committed to Christ and living a Spirit filled life in the context of His community, the Church. This class is intended for those who wish only to explore Orthodoxy, for those who wish to become members of the Church and for those members of our parish family already Orthodox but interested in broadening and deepening their faith.

I don't know if we're getting anywhere, Tarjei, but I'll try my best to respond. I had said that we need to have a rational foundation for truth claims, including religious truth claims, especially when they move from subjective beliefs to publicly proclaimed truth claims. You responded: In that case you are going beyond the realm of religion based on faith and entering the approach taken by spiritual science, anthroposophy. If you are not doing this, you are within the limits of faith-religion, where any talk of objective proof is inapplicable. By the same token, nobody can set up a boundary between subjective belief and "objective public realm" unless they they are taking the step from faith to knowledge, from religion to science. Is faith in your understanding contradictory to knowledge? I would hold that they are compatible, and that religion and true science must be reconcilable as well.

Dickens from an Orthodox Perspective
In looking around for an article about women and orthodoxy (more on that in the future) I ran across Russian Pickwickians: Dickens from an Orthodox Vantage (PDF reader needed). Judging from the size of his Dickens collection , I suspect Dr. Bacchus will enjoy it. The article discusses reading Dickens to children, how Dickens presents salvation and Christian happiness, and finding real life people like Dickens characters. Orthodox Christianity 9:04 am
