The Fire of the Holy Spirit: Do we grasp the real meaning of Pentecost?
For years now, I’ve always known when the feast of Pentecost is approaching. This is because my parents and others began to prepare to visit the cemeteries so that the priests may serve requiem services on the graves of family and friends. But if this is the “highlight” of Trinity Sunday, is it because we’ve lost the sense of what Pentecost is all about? Isn’t there more to this important feast-day? May 27, 2004

About this Project My work on this topic grew out research for my M.Div. thesis at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theo- logical Seminary on the topic of "Orthodox Christianity and Contraception." The name comes from the crowns ('stephana') which are placed on the heads of the bride and groom during the Orthodox wedding service. It was chosen in the hope that these materials would help married couples grow in their love for each other and contemplate more deeply the mystery of marriage.
What is offered here to the public is posted with some fear and trepidation. For one thing, there are many rough edges—there has not been time to refine everything. Furthermore, I am aware that some of the topics discussed here are controversial. Please be aware that these things are posted in a spirit of dialogue—I hope that this material will spur (not spurn) further discussion, reflection, debate, and real conversation.
Too often in the Church in particular and in our society at large we are plagued with parallel monologues, polemics in which neither side honestly hears or considers the merits of the other. At the same time, disagree- ments are often real and differences may run deep. But even in those cases it is helpful to go beyond stereotypes and ad hominem accusations and attempt to clarify some of the deeper issues involveddown to the first principles which form the basis for any of our reasoning.

    Orthodox Christianity
    versus Biblical Christianity
In the following I respond to some statements made by those who associated themselves with the "Orthodox Church" representing its teachings and practices. Some Orthodox Christian leaders have responded disagreeing that such sources represent their own perspective, whom I also give a say through the links found at the bottom of the page. And if there is any other Orthodox Christian leader who would also like to critique this page let me know. I can add on material. First of all concerning the term "Orthodox", every Christian and every institutional form of Christianity reckons their own theology to be most Biblical. But the fact that there are diversity of beliefs among Christians reveals that someone has to be mistaken. (In fact even within the Orthodox Church there are a diversity of opinions as to what constitutes Orthodox theology and practice.) And though this particular group may call itself "Orthodox", that doesn't mean that its beliefs are necessarily "orthodox" from a Biblical standpoint, but rather that they are "orthodox" in their own mind. But Orthodox Christianity and Catholicism, being ultra-institutionalize forms of Christianity, suffer similar shortcomings when they purport to represent Biblical Christianity. But as I said not all Orthodox Christians hold to these positions.

    Orthodox Church in America
    The Orthodox Church
Historically, the contemporary Orthodox church stands in direct continuity with the earliest Christian communities founded in regions of the Eastern Mediterranean by the apostles of Jesus. The Orthodox Christian Church, also sometimes called the Eastern Church, or the Greek Orthodox Church, claims to have preserved the original and apostolic Christian faith. Figures for its worldwide membership are estimated at around 200 million.
    Structure and Organization
    History
Historically, the contemporary Orthodox church stands in direct continuity with the earliest Christian communities founded in regions of the Eastern Mediterranean by the apostles of Jesus. The subsequent destinies of Christianity in those areas were shaped by the transfer (320) of the imperial capital from Rome to Constantinople by Constantine I. As a consequence, during the first 8 centuries of Christian history most major intellectual, cultural, and social developments in the Christian church also took place in that region; for example, all ecumenical councils of that period met either in Constantinople or in its vicinity. Missionaries, coming from Constantinople, converted the Slavs and other peoples of Eastern Europe to Christianity (Bulgaria, 864; Russia, 988) and translated Scripture and liturgical texts into the vernacular languages used in the various regions. Thus, the liturgy, traditions, and practices of the church of Constantinople were adopted by all and still provide the basic patterns and ethos of contemporary Orthodoxy.

    Introduction
The church of Rome, the Roman Catholic Church , represents the "Western" tradition. The formal division of the Church into separate Eastern and Western churches is regarded as having occurred in in what is known as the Great Schism . Both churches claim to be the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church , and reject the other's claim to this title. The designation "Orthodox" reflects the additional claim of the Eastern church to have retained unchanged the original church traditions of teaching and worship . "Catholic" meanwhile reflects the claim by church leaders who are in communion with Rome to an all encompassing authority on Christian matters.

    The Spread of Orthodox Christianity
By the fourth century A.D., under the Emperor Constantine the Great, Christianity as a religion became tolerated and legal-keeping in mind that since apostolic times the Church was persecuted. By the fifth century, Orthodox Christianity became so widespread that it became the only religion recognized by the Roman government. The great centers of Orthodox Christianity were Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem. The bishops of these great cities and their surrounding regions governed the entire Church for the most part. For this reason, they were given honorary titles such as: Pope, Patriarch, Archbishop or Metropolitan, depending on the size of their flock or importance of their geographic or historic domain. All bishops were/are equal whether they preside over a small region or great city. No bishop may interfere within the jurisdiction of another bishop unless it is proven by a council of bishops that he has fallen into heresy.

      What is OCNet?
OCNet is a network of BBS conferences for Orthodox Christians that was started by Fr George Masters and Frank Crispell in California, USA. It is now linked to the FamilyNet BBS network and distributed around the world using Fido Technology and the Internet. Any BBS that uses Fido-compatible mailers can link to it, and mail packets are available via the Internet using FTP. We would like to see Orthodox parishes, seminaries and monasteries setting up their own BBSs, and linking into this network. If you are a member of an Orthodox parish, or if there is a monastery and seminary nearby, please inform them about this, and encourage them to participate. If you want to start your own BBS, all you need is a computer, a modem and a phone line. Parishes, schools, seminaries etc could easily start a BBS using an office computer, and run the BBS after office hours. Individuals can do the same thing. See How to start your own BBS for more details. FamilyNet is a general BBS network, and has several other echoes (conferences) that may be of interest apart from the Orthodox ones. It uses Zone 8 for mail exchange. Mail is also available via Planet Connect in the USA, and by ftp from

    What is Orthodox Christianity?
Christ Pantocrator From St. Catherine's Monastery, Mount Sinai, Egypt Orthodoxy is that form of Christianity which gives right glory or right worship to God the Holy Trinity. Orthodoxy is the Christian Church, in succession to the Patriarchs, Prophets, and Priests of the Old Testament, which was founded by our Lord Jesus Christ when He Ordained His Apostles and sent the Holy Spirit upon the faithful gathered in Jerusalem at Pentecost. The followers of the Way were first called Christians at Antioch; and the Christians were first called Catholics in a letter of St. Ignatius of Antioch in about the year AD 98. The Orthodox are the original Christians, the first Catholics, the Church of the Apostles, and the Community of the New Testament. The Western Churches, including that of Rome, were part of the unity of Orthodoxy through the whole of the first 1,000 years. Rome only separated from the unity of the church by making extraordinary claims for the earthly powers of her patriarch (Pope) at the beginning of the 11th century and completed the break with the Orthodox by the 13th century.
