Vol. VI, Number 10 AN OPEN LETTER To Our Newly Begotten Brethren Recently Baptized
by Herbert W. Armstrong
GREETINGS! newly baptized Brethren in Christ Jesus: This year again there is joy and rejoicing among the angels over your repentance and having been begotten to a lively hope as CHILDREN OF GOD thru Jesus Christ our Lord! And there is new joy in the hearts of ALL our true brethren and co-workers in Christ over your recent conversion from the desires and will of the flesh and the ways and customs of the world, to the government of God in your life now, that you may have reward in His Kingdom at the coming of Christ, in the World Tomorrow! You will Meet Trials You have entered upon a new life a life of great happiness and joy a life to continue FOREVER yet, in this present evil world it will not be an easy life. As a matter of fact you have left behind the "easy way" the popular, broad road that leads to destruction. You have passed the cross-roads and turned off onto the narrow, rutty, bumpy, rocky and HARD and DIFFICULT road which very few people in this world ever are willing to enter but which leads to SUCCESS, to USEFULNESS, to HAPPINESS, JOY and ETERNAL LIFE. It leads to rewards not of idleness and ease, but to usefulness and service and accomplishment and success so great that I know your mind can't possibly grasp it, now. BUT YOU'LL HAVE TO PAY THE PRICE!

The Brethren of the Free Spirit - divine amorality.
A history of pantheism and scientific pantheism by Paul Harrison.
Rejoice with me, for I have become God. I am made eternal in my eternal blessedness.
In the early thirteenth century, a number of theologians at Paris were preaching a pantheistic Christianity. David of Dinant taught that God was identical with primary matter: "It is manifest that there is only one substance, not only of all bodies, but also of all souls, and that this substance is nothing else but God himself. . . It is clear, then, that God and Matter and Mind are one substance.' Amalric of Bena (also known as Amaury de Bene) held that God was the formal principle of all things, and that every single person was as much God as was Christ. The works of both men were condemned as heretical and burned. In 1215 Amalric's bones were exhumed and reburied in an unconsecrated field. After Amalric's death in 1207 a group of fourteen clerics, which included Amalric's secretary, began to profess pantheistic beliefs. They held that `all things are One, because whatever is, is God.' They believed that, just as the time of the Patriarchs was the age of the Father, and the Christian era to date the age of the Son, so now a new age of the Holy Spirit was dawning, and they were its heralds. One of the ringleaders proclaimed that he was God, and therefore he could not be burned by fire or hurt by torture. If everything is God, then everything is also good. It follows that there can be no such thing as sin. Hence the Amaurians indulged in (or at least they were accused of indulging in) sexual pleasures and crimes of all kinds. "They committed rapes and adulteries and other acts which gave pleasure to the body. And to the women with whom they sinned, and to the simple people whom they deceived, they promised that sins would not be punished."

The Unity of the Brethren
A Historical Sketch
The Unity of the Brethren traces its roots to the work of the reforming priest, John Hus, martyred in 1415. Hus was concerned with bringing the church back to its spiritual roots and removing distracting influences that tradition and custom had added over the years. Hus was concerned with providing the scriptures in the language of the people, instead of the church Latin version which only the educated and clergy had the opportunity to learn. Hus also desired the church to surrender much of the secular power and material possessions it had accumulated so that its spiritual mission could proceed unhindered. The reforms that Hus suggested met with tremendous opposition from church authorities, although they were popular with the common people. The execution of Hus by the church in 1415 incensed the people of the Czech lands and led to the development of an alternative church, the Unity of the Brethren in 1457. The Unity of the Brethren grew in influence until it was the predominant religious force in the Czech lands. The later reformers Martin Luther and John Calvin had several contacts with the Brethren in the course of their ministries. While the Anabaptists were opposed by the Roman Catholics and other Protestants of the time, the Brethren offered them sanctuary in their homeland. The level of religious conflict in Europe grew until open warfare became inevitable. In 1620, early in the Thirty Years War, the Protestant forces in the Czech lands suffered a devastating defeat that led to the imposition of the Counter-Reformation by the Roman Catholic Church. During this time, Protestants were forced either to leave the country and become refugees or to practice their beliefs in secret.

HOMOSEXUALITY AND THE
CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN
Editorial
March/April, 1992
Volume 27, Number 2
The issue of homosexuality has not been laid aside in the Church of the Brethren. Some look at homosexuality as a sin; others see it as a gift from God. The pages of Messenger frequently have letters from readers that express points of view pro and con. There continues to be a great deal of polarization concerning the issue. The 1983 Annual Conference decision on human sexuality is being interpreted in many ways. The printed message featured on the pages just ahead was delivered more than 1 1/2 years ago, but the facts continue to be relevant. More recently, in the Winter, 1991 issue of Brethren Life and Thought , more than forty pages were devoted to a discussion of homosexuality in the Church of the Brethren. The purpose of the fourteen articles in the special Brethren Life and Thought issue, was to determine whether or not the church is "extending Christlike comfort and grace to homosexual and bisexual persons" (as recommended in the 1983 Human Sexuality Report).

    "Brethren of the Lord"
When Catholics call Mary the "Blessed Virgin," they mean she remained a virgin throughout her life. When Protestants refer to Mary as "virgin," they mean she was a virgin only until Jesus’ birth. They believe that she and Joseph later had children whom Scripture refers to as "the brethren of the Lord." The disagreement arises over biblical verses that use the terms "brethren," "brother," and "sister."
There are about ten instances in the New Testament where "brothers" and "sisters" of the Lord are mentioned (Matt. 12:46; Matt. 13:55; Mark 3:31–34; Mark 6:3; Luke 8:19–20; John 2:12, 7:3, 5, 10; Acts 1:14; 1 Cor. 9:5).
When trying to understand these verses, note that the term "brother" (Greek: adelphos ) has a wide meaning in the Bible. It is not restricted to the literal meaning of a full brother or half-brother. The same goes for "sister" (
