Plymouth Brethren
The Plymouth Brethren is a Christian religious movement founded in Dublin Ireland in by John Nelson Darby , Edward Cronin, John Bellett, and Francis Hutchinson. As the movement spread, a large group of adherents assembled in Plymouth, England and the members were called the Plymouth Brethren. Later this movement split several times, resulting in the Open Brethren mainly referred to by the name "Plymouth Brethren" and the Exclusive Brethren , a cult -like cell-structured movement led by James Taylor Senior, James Taylor Junior, James H. Symington, John S. Hales, and currently Bruce D. Hales. The latter branch is not represented on the Internet for obvious reasons: their teachings forbids all use of computers, TV and radio, and their organization has strong mechanisms in place to ensure that this policy is followed. (They are, however, allowed to read newspapers.)

Plymouth Brethren by C. H. Spurgeon
From the February 1867 Sword and Trowel
E HAVE been requested to reply to a small tract which has been given away at the door of the Tabernacle, by one of the "Plymouth Brethren," but it is so devoid of all sense, Scripture and reason, that it needs no reply. We have not learned the art of beating the air, or replying to nonsense. The only meaning we could gather from the rambling writer's remarks was a confirmation of our accusation, and a wonderful discovery that a long controverted point is now settled; the unpardonable sin is declared to be speaking against the Darbyites. Neither Mr. Newton* nor Mr. Muller** would sanction such action; it is only from one clique that we receive this treatment. It is worthy of note that even the printer was ashamed or afraid to put his name to the printed paper. Our error was rectified as soon as ever we knew of it, and being fallible we could do no more; but these men, who pretend to be so marvellously led of the Spirit, have in this case deliberately, and in the most unmanly manner, sought to injure the character of one who has committed the great sin of mortifying their pride, and openly exposing their false doctrine. NOTES (added by The Spurgeon Archive) John Cox's letter to the editor in the March 1867 Sword and Trowel. [

The Plymouth Brethren - A Brief History
by Miles J. Stanford BEGINNINGS - Early in 1825 in Dublin, Ireland, Dr. Edward Cronin and Edward Wilson began meeting together each Lord's Day morning for the breaking of bread, worship, and study of the Word. Students of the Scriptures, these godly men could not feel at home nor find spiritual food and fellowship in the Anglican Church of Ireland and, since they did not believe in church membership (already being members of the Body of Christ), were not accepted in the relatively few dissenting and independent churches of the day.
They felt that they were heeding the Lord's pronouncement in Matthew 18:20, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." They were not seeking to start a movement of any kind, they were not in competition with existing churches, nor did they attempt to influence others to do as they were doing.
Nevertheless, in 1827 the little flock included H. Hutchinson, Wm. Stokes, Lord Congleton, J.G. Bellett, and J. N. Darby - the latter being an ex-lawyer, and at the time a cleric in the Irish National Church.

Independent Fundamentalist Family
Churches in this family flowed from the work of John Nelson Darby (1800-1882). He was an Anglican priest who came to reject the idea of a state church and sought an approach to faith that would be non-denominational. The movement he began in England in the 1820s attempted a more complete revival of early Christianity than either the Puritan or Wesleyan movements, which had come earlier. This new movement sought to literally recreate the Apostolic church through intense focus on the Bible. Darby’s key theological concept was “dispensationalism.” From his work came modern fundamentalism. Dispensationalism sees the Bible as a history of God's dealing with humanity in terms of various periods (dispensations) of history. There are different characteristics of the various periods and subdivisions, with different themes and issues apparent at different times. Based on this theory, the true church was seen as a faithful subgroup. Anyone who would foster a particular denomination was seen as acting contrary to the action of the Holy Spirit. Darby established assemblies of like-minded believers. They accepted no authority except the "charismatic" leadership of Darby.

At that time Shakespeare was not available to him, but there was a family Bible. A.E.K. first read the Bible from a purely literary point of view. During grade school and high school A.E.K. would do errands for his brother's print shop on Boyd Street, Commercial Printing House, largest in L.A. Soon after graduating from high school he began working full time there as "printer's devil" doing all the dirty work. Later he obtained his apprenticeship and eventually became superintendent.

Whatever Happened to the Brethren?
Church history always fascinates me. This page I found gives a great introduction to the Brethren?
"The Open Brethren began in the 19th century with a group of British Evangelical Christians who wanted to return to the purity of the New Testament Church. Their desire was to base church practice on the Bible, rather than on the traditions of a particular denomination. Key early Brethren leaders included J N Darby, A. N. Groves, and George Muller. Some of the distinctives of the Brethren are:
-The autonomy of the local congregation
-Leadership by a body of lay elders; opposition to the idea of a paid professional ministry
-The Lord's Supper - a Communion service which is open for any (male) member in good standing to teach, give a
-Bible reading, pray, announce a hymn etc.
-The baptism of believers (i.e. not infants), by immersion
-Usually (but not always) a very conservative interpretation of the Bible's teaching about the role of women; in particular, no place for women in leadership or public teaching. "

- opens in separate window EXCLUSIVE BRETHREN Plymouth Brethren The roots of this group go back to the ministry of John Nelson Darby. JND was trained in law at Trinity College, Dublin but once converted to Christ he joined the Anglican Church in Ireland. In 1829 he joined a free Bible Study in Dublin which eventually split off from the Anglican Church. The first Brethren meeting held in Plymouth, Devon, England was in January 1832. The web pages on Plymouth Brethren (referred to as 'web1' in future) tell us that, We need to understand that at this point the group was not cultish and indeed whereas there may be differences of secondary doctrine with groups that have stayed loyal to this original vision they are not a cult. In order for us to be clear, we need to look at the early history of the creation of what can be called in broad terms 'Open Brethren' and 'Exclusive Brethren'. The early vision was to throw off, as they saw it, the trappings of 'religion' and meet without ordained ministers and carefully orchestrated meetings. Every man was encouraged to take part and the meetings were in simple places. There were no musical instruments and the breaking of bread was a simple but meaningful act.

  • A. Gathering Clouds the oneness and fellowship among the Brethren was too fair a scene for Satan to tolerate However, the oneness and fellowship among the Brethren was too fair a scene for Satan to tolerate. Soon the clouds began to gather and the beauties of this primitive scene began to be marred, its loveliness decimated. Despite Darby's and Newton's many talents and contributions, their differences began to create turmoil and division which limited the extent of the Lord's work among the Brethren. 1. Differences on Prophetic Matters One difference between Newton and Darby that soon became apparent was on prophetic matters. In the biography of Groves, Lang mentions three different views on prophetic matters held among the Brethren: (top) This latter group thought that some believers would pass through the tribulation and that only the overcomers would share in the first resurrection with the millennial kingdom being a reward to them. Newton felt that the church would go through the tribulation and that all the saints would be raptured when the Lord appears at the end of the tribulation. Darby believed that the entire church would be raptured before the days of the great tribulation. Despite these doctrinal differences, for a long while all of these saints walked in the same basic way and met according to the same principles. 2. Differences on the Church

    The Plymouth Brethren
Following Darby's return to England in 1845, disputes over doctrine and church government split the Brethren. Darby's followers formed a closely-knit federation of churches, and were known as the Exclusive Brethren; the others, called Open Brethren, maintained a congregational form of church government, and less rigorous standards for membership. The Exclusive Brethren later split into yet smaller sub-sects. Return to Index Page
