Who are the Brethren? by F. F. Bruce
  • Introduction Origins Overseas Missions Doctrines ... About The Author
  • Introduction
The Brethren , or 'Christian Brethren' , take this name because they prefer to be known by a designation comprehensive enough to embrace all their fellow-Christians. There are two main groupings among them, commonly described as 'Open Brethren' and 'Exclusive Brethren' . The terms 'Open' and 'Exclusive' are intended to denote their respective principles of communion. These pages are concerned only with the people called 'Open Brethren'; the writer has no authority to write about his 'Exclusive' friends. It may be useful to make one point in this connection, however. During the last year or two considerable publicity has been given in British newspapers to the withdrawal of a number of people called Brethren from various business and professional associations, and from Universities. These people belong to one party only of Exclusive Brethren, and their policy in such matters is not shared by other Exclusive Brethren, and still less by Open Brethren. This distinction has not always been clearly observed, and the result has been considerable confusion in the public mind. The Open Brethren have no central organization. They belong to a large number of local churches or assemblies, spread throughout the British Commonwealth, the United States, the European continent and many other regions.

    The Exclusive Brethren
Within the U.K. most Brethren churches are 'Open Brethren'. There is, however, another, separate group, known as the 'Exclusive Brethren'. In the early days of the 'Plymouth Brethren' movement, the movement divided, because a member who had been excommunicated from one fellowship, was allowed to take communion in another. Those who believed this was unacceptable followed the lead of J N Darby and became known as 'Darbyites', and later as 'Exclusive Brethren'. The Exclusive Brethren meeting rooms have no windows. In most of their main beliefs, Exclusive Brethren are the same as other Christians. However, their emphasis on the verse 'Let every one who names the name of the Lord withdraw from iniquity' ( The Bible, 2 Timothy chapter 2 verse 19 ) has led them to live their lives as separately as possible. They believe everyone who does not follow their beliefs to be iniquitous, and therefore to be avoided as far as possible, and especially to be excluded from 'Breaking Bread' (Communion). These quotes are from the 'Darby' translation of the Bible, which they invariably use. This chart lists some of the differences between 'Exclusive' and 'Open' Brethren.

    Whatever Happened to the Brethren?
A survey of local churches in 1998-1999
by Graham Brown, with an introduction by Neil Summerton Partnership / Paternoster Press 2003 This new book describes the results of a major survey of churches of 'Open Brethren' background in the United Kingdom. The Open Brethren began in the 19th century with a group of British Evangelical Christians who wanted to return to the purity of the New Testament Church. Their desire was to base church practice on the Bible, rather than on the traditions of a particular denomination. Key early Brethren leaders included J N Darby, A. N. Groves, and George Muller. Some of the distinctives of the Brethren are:
    • The autonomy of the local congregation Leadership by a body of lay elders; opposition to the idea of a paid professional ministry

The Plymouth Brethren is a Christian religious movement in Dublin Ireland in made prominent by John Nelson Darby , Edward Cronin, John Bellett, and Francis Hutchinson. As the movement spread, a large group of adherents assembled in Plymouth, England and the members were called the Plymouth Brethren. Between the years and a difference over the "independence" of local meetings resulted in the first division, causing a distinction to be made between the open brethren mainly referred to by the name "Plymouth Brethren" and the exclusive brethren Open brethren remain loosely affiliated and over the years have come to resemble Protestant evangelical churches in doctrine, except that there are no officially recognized clergy and the Lord's Supper is celebrated weekly - both of which are common to open and exclusive groups alike. Exclusive brethren experienced numerous splits over disputes as to doctrine and various groups resulting from these still exist. But in , upon the death of prominent teacher James Taylor Senior, a political power-struggle ensued. Within 10 years time a
