In a move to honor those heroes and many others in our communities, dozens of Christian denominations have committed to encouraging their pastors and churches to be a part of a nationwide effort called Honor Our Heroes. Honor Our Heroes is an initiative of the Mission America Coalition designed to help build bridges between churches and communities as they honor those who have shown outstanding courage, character, sacrifice and service. The articles in this collection were first presented as papers at the 1990 Baptist Heritage Conference in Edmonton, and represent yet another attempt to explore and explain the diversity and complexity of the Baptist experience in Canada. The publication of the papers of any conference presents special challenges to both the editor and the reviewer; this collection, with considerable strengths and obvious weaknesses, is no exception. Other such volumes, the result of earlier Baptist conferences, have explored some of the major themes of denominational life and development in British North America and Canada. The papers presented here tend to re-examine some of the more important topics, with some success, but the real significance of the collection is to be found in the light it sheds on some largely unexplored areas and little-understood strands.

The road to graduate theological education is usually one of great sacrifice and personal commitment. We realize the cost of quality education is an important issue at this point in your decision making. We understand that it will take true commitment to God's call and faith in His abounding blessing in order to accurately count the cost and measure the value of the comprehensive educational experience that you will encounter at NABS.
NABS makes a determined effort to see that no student who qualifies for admission to a degree program is denied opportunity to engage in theological education because of a lack of funds. Grants, scholarships, loans, campus employment, remunerative church ministry, and employment opportunities in the Sioux Falls community are available. For a detailed description of the types of financial aid you would be eligible to receive as a student at NABS, please contact the financial aid office at 1-800-440-NABS and the Director of Enrollment Services will be more than willing to discuss financial aid options with you.

North American Baptist Seminary affirms the Statement of Beliefs of the North American Baptist Conference which was adopted by the 1982 NAB Conference in Niagara Falls, New York.
Baptists, since their beginnings, repeatedly have composed confessions which expressed the doctrinal consensus among related churches. In principle, however, Baptists always have insisted that no statement of faith can be considered creedally binding even upon concurring congregations. The purpose of their doctrinal summaries was to explain to other Christians and to the larger society what Baptists believed and practiced. Within and among Baptist churches, statements of faith also provided a standard for instruction, counsel, and fellowship.
We, as North American Baptist Conference, presently feel the need to state more fully our Baptist understanding of the Christian faith. The purpose that guided us in writing and the use that we intend for this declaration are
1. To further the sense of identity and the spirit of unity within our North American Baptist Conference by declaring our common doctrinal understandings;

1998 Highlights
Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America
Many people associate the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America with our quarterly journal, Baptist Peacemaker (sent free to anyone who requests it), or PeaceWork our bi-monthly newsletter for members. And we're widely recognized for excellence. This year Baptist Peacemaker again won two awards from the Associated Church Press. Other publishing projects currently underway include: Pursuing Justice, a 10-session Bible study on a variety of social justice topics designed for use in local congregations; The Best of Baptist Peacemaker, a book collecting the best articles from the journal over the past two decades; Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth: A resource for congregations engaged in dialog on sexual orientation; and a collection of 52 "children's sermons" for use in worship. Many also assume that "peacemaking" means involvement in international issues. And we are, in some dramatic ways:
In 1998 we continued our conflict mediation work with the Naga people of Northeast India, including meetings with guerilla army leaders interested in developing a nonviolent struggle for justice.
