With their invention of the longship, the Vikings spurred a literal sea change in medieval European affairs. Secrets of Norse Ships
by Evan Hadingham
For three turbulent centuries, the glimpse of a square sail and dragon-headed prow on the horizon struck terror into the hearts of medieval Europeans. Indeed, the Viking Age, from A.D. 800-1100, was the age of the sleek, speedy longship. Without this crucial advance in ship technology, the Vikings would never have become a dominant force in medieval warfare, politics, and trade.
The drekar, or dragon-headed longships, were stealthy troop-carriers. They could cross the open oceans under sail and then switch to oars for lightning-fast hit-and-run attacks on undefended towns and monasteries. Far surpassing contemporary English or Frankish vessels in lightness and efficiency, longships carried Viking raiders from northern England to north Africa.
Viking expertise in naval craftsmanship soon led to the evolution of other types of ship. Among these were the knarr

William Fitzhugh, curator in the Department of Anthropology at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, says the Vikings were far from simply brutish barbarians in horned helmets. Who Were the Vikings?
In Norse, means piracy, and for centuries indeed, ever since Viking raiders savagely attacked England's Lindisfarne monastery in A.D. 793 the Vikings have seemed to many to have been little more than blue-eyed barbarians in horned helmets. But archeological investigations of Viking sites stretching from Russia to Newfoundland have revealed a more human (if not altogether humane) side to the Viking character. In this interview with NOVA producer Julia Cort, William Fitzhugh, curator of a new exhibit on Vikings at the Smithsonian Insitution, offers compelling insight into this new image of the Norsemen and what he perceives as their catalytic role in Europe's transformation from a feudal society to an integrated group of modern nation-states.
NOVA: What must it have been like for the monks at Lindisfarne to be suddenly attacked out of the blue?
Fitzhugh: For them, the attack represented the vengeance of Satan on the Christian outposts of Europe. It was a terrible event, because the monks and the church centers had set themselves up in small, fortress-like places where they could pursue their studies and writings in peace, and it was an invasion of the sanctitude of Christ and their religion. This was totally unlike anything that had happened before. There had been outlaws, but to have shiploads of brawny characters show up at your isolated, supposedly sacred center, this was the ultimate horror.

Thor
Very different from the Fabioesque Marvel superhero, the original Thor defined macho centuries before muscle cars and chaps even existed. We're dealing with a being who owned magical goats which he slaughtered and ate every night. The next day they came back to life, he'd have them pull his divine cart for a while, then he'd eat 'em again! This is an entity who lost only one drinking contest is his entire existence, and then only because as it turned out he was drinking the entire sea and didn't realize it. Not big on perception skills, but he sure could hold his liquor and/or seawater. A Loki
Having earned a B.A. in literature from a California university, I've attended more lectures on The Trickster Figure in Myth than I care to recall. You've got Coyote, Eshu, The Great Gazoo, the list goes on and on. And then you've got Loki. "Trickster figure" doesn't even begin to cover it. You think trickster, you think practical jokes, shoplifting, maybe some tagging. You don't tend to think of leading the legions of hell in battle against the gods at the end of the universe, but that's exactly what Loki's got jotted down in his celestial Palm Pilot. Also he's fathering illegitimate monsters with a giantess in his off hours. Heavy. B+ Balder
The god of love, purity, beauty, blah blah blah. Balder's mom was worried about him, so she got all objects in the universe to swear they'd never kill him, which is pretty obsessive. Unfortunately for some reason she overlooked a mistletoe tree, and so Balder suffered the godly and heroic death of a mistletoe sprig through the heart. Then the goddess of death agreed to give him back if everything in the universe wept for him. Which everyone did except for Loki. Moral of the story: there's always someone to fuck anything up.

NORSE AUTO SURVEYORS ATLANTA PRE PURCHASE INSPECTION COLLISION REPAIR SURVEY HIGHLINE SPECIALISTS EVENING AND WEEKEND INSPECTION APPOINTMENTS
Shopping for a pre owned automobile? Don't expect a salesperson or owner to volunteer any information about collision damage, an improper repair will devalue the vehicle. Your purchase should be inspected by a certified collision repair professional, and then checked for wheel alignment. Since it's not cost efficient to hire an inspector for every vehicle your looking at, we've gathered a few tips to help pre qualify your purchase. Notice the masking tape on this vehicle. When the tape is removed there will be an edge that can be easily seen and felt with your fingers. A good repair shop will try to remove tapelines and overspray, but there is always some evidence of repaint. As you're walking around the car and opening doors, hood and decklid, feel all the edges, any roughness or sharp lines will alert you to paint work.
Most important of visual inspections are the air gaps between panels When crumple zones have been crumpled anything less
than a perfect unibody repair will equate to poor
alignment of doors, hood, trunk, even bumper covers.

Early Volsung History
By: Eric A. Anderson
The most popular saga in the Norse myths was the Volsung Saga, so popular in fact that it still inspires stories today. Many people have read J.R.R. Tolkien or heard Richard Wagners Ring Cycle, and know that this saga inspired these stories. One person in fact stated that this saga is as important to Scandinavia as the legend of King Arthur is to the English. If you look into this saga, you start to see some similarities to that famous legend. Where to start? Where else but the beginning. I used a book written by Jesse L. Byock for the major source of what I am writing from his excellent book titled, what else, The Saga of the Volsungs: The Norse Epic of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer.
After Sigi was outlawed, Odin came to him and guided him on a long journey where he left him with warriors and long ships for raiding. From this small army, Sigi was able to take control of a country named Hunland and married a woman of noble birth. After a time she gave birth to a son which they named Rerir.
Sigi's most trusted men where his wife's brothers, who secretly envied him, and plotted to overthrow him. One day Sigi went out with some men and where ambushed and killed by his wife's brothers, and they took control of Hunland.

Heilsa! Thanks for stopping in. I've got several hundred pieces and this is just a start. I'll try to keep adding pieces as time permits. The division between Norse and Celtic is somewhat arbitrary. One is largely derived from the other, and there is a lot of crossover, so be sure to visit the Celtic Medallion Page as well. The most important Viking Age Medallion, the Thor's Hammer has its own page, don't miss it either! Click on the images for an enlarged view. A Simple Guide to Creating Old Norse Names
by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (Sara L. Friedemann)
Sara L. Friedemann This guide will show you how to construct a typical Norse name from the Viking Age. I have listed common elements and structures of names, but not an exhaustive list of all possibilities. The information in this guide is taken from "The Old Norse Name" by Geirr Bassi Haraldsson (G. Fleck). A list of masculine and feminine names taken from this source can be found at Viking Names Found in the In this guide, I have used the standard Old Norse forms of the names.
Name Structures
There are two ways of forming Norse names; the most common is using a given name with the addition of a patronymic byname, or a byname based on relationship. To create a patronym, the suffix -son 'son' or 'daughter' is added to the genitive form of the father's name. The guide below, taken from G. Fleck's book, shows how this can be done. -i -a: Snorri Snorrason -a -u: Sturla Sturluson -nn -ns: Sveinn Sveinsson -ll -ls: Ketill Ketilsson -rr -rs: Geirr Geirsson -r -s -ir -is: Grettir Grettisson Names that end in and -þróndr form a genitive with - ar -ar: The other way to form a name was the use of a nickname. In Norse culture, these were not always very complimentary; in the list of nicknames linked below, there are things such as:

Welcome to Ingeborg's Norse Heathen Pages Yes, my home page looks and feels different now: it's gone from a rune teaching site in the late 1990s to a general Asatru site six years later, so I thought a name change and a facelift made good sense. (I have an FAQ and a "Ten Basics of Heathenry" article here, for those of you who aren't familiar with Asatru at all.) links section at the bottom of this page. let me know so I can give you proper credit and keep them here legitimately: as often as Heathens talk about honor, it would be wrong not to practice what I preach! By now you're probably thinking: "OK, already...when do we get to the good stuff?" Here it is! (Some of the old links, especially in the rune section , have been disabled or removed; if I plan to put up a new version of a page, the list below should make that clear. Please be patient with me, and enjoy what's here in the meantime.) KNOW HOW TO READ THEM (an online guide to the runes) This section of the site has been temporarily removed; a completely new version will be released one section at a time Part One: What the Runes Areand Aren't [coming in early June 2004] Part Two: Freyr's Ætt (the first group of eight) [returning in mid-June 2004] Part Three: Heimdall's Ætt (the second group of eight) [returning in late June 2004] Part Four: Tyr's Ætt (the third and last group of eight) [returning in early July 2004] Ingeborg's Asatru 101 (articles for curious non-Heathens and new convertsnot to be confused with the "Asatru 101" currently available at another site)

Norse Culture
Norse culture was brought to Scotland by Scandinavian Viking raiders, traders and settlers. The Viking period started in the eighth century, lasted several hundred years and made an enduring impact on the Highlands and Islands. Shetland, Orkney and Caithness in particular have a strong sense of Norse identity although the northern and western Highlands and Islands also retain a memory of Norse heritage. The old Norse or Norn language ceased to be spoken in Shetland - its last stronghold in the British Isles - around the end of the 18th century. The Norse identity in Orkney, Shetland and Caithness manifests itself in place names, many Norse words in the local dialects, cultural and trading links with the Nordic countries and a general consciousness of Nordic heritage of which Shetland's "Up Helly A" winter festival is perhaps the most spectacular manifestation. The Nordic tradition is also reflected in local styles of boat, which resemble miniature Viking ships, and products such as knitwear and jewellery. Od - Od has two beautiful daughters, Hnoss and Gersimi, with the beautiful fertility goddess Freya. This mysterious husband of Freyrja disappeared, and she mourned for him with tears of gold. No reason is ever given for his disappearance other than that he was a "traveller". The name Od may be another form of the name Odin. - ON: Inspiration, fury; given to humankind by Odhin's brother Hoenir. Cognate to Modern German Wut and English wood (used archaically to mean madness).. - ("Exciter or Stirrer of Inspiration") ON. This is both a name of the Mead of Poetry and its container, which Odin stole from Suttung's daughter The Mead was actually stored in three cauldrons: Odhroerir, Son, and Bodhn. Odian - A technical term for the "theology" of the Erulian. Distinguished from the Odinist by the fact that the Odian does not worship Odhinn but seeks to emulate his pattern of self-transformation. The Asatru list is an internet mailing list for the communication of ideas and information between Asatru folk and interested parties. Posts on any topic connected with the practice of Asatru are welcome. There are currently (9/99) almost 200 people on the list and roughly two dozen messages a day on a variety of topics. All you need to join is an e-mail address. To join send a mail message to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com containing the message " SUBSCRIBE ASATRU Your Name " (Leave off the quotes.) "Your Name" is not your e-mail address (the listserv will get this automagically from the headers), but refers to the name you wish to have in the "from" section of the message. If you are interested in joining, you should read The Asatru List Charter If you are new to Asatru, please visit Asatru Basics If you'd like to learn more about Norse Mythology, visit Folklore and Mythology Electronic Texts or The Norse Mythology Web Page The internet has its own terminology, some of which is readily accessible to new people, some of which is not. Any forum with a history (like this list) tends to develop its own in-jokes, references and terminology. Several scholars have commented on this, seeing it as a belief in transmigration of the soul among the Old norse ( The Old norse Name , p. 5).
http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/ONNames.htm
Dear Viking Answer Lady,
How did the People of the North choose names for their children? Could you perhaps list some first names and then, perhaps, an explaination of surnames?
(signed) Viking Lady Without A Name
Gentle Readers:
In general, parents named their children after a deceased relative or hero. In some way the child was believed to inherit with the name the gifts or personality of their namesake: this belief almost seems to have been one of reincarnation of the named relative in the new child once the name was bestowed. It was very common to give children the names of honored relatives, for the Northmen believed that children would partake of the virtues of the ones whose names they bore. Relatives recently dead, in particular, were thus remembered by their kindred, a custom resulting from a half belief that the spirit of the beloved dead lived again in the little child. Present day Scandinavians still "call up" deceased members of their families in this manner. ( Social Scandinavia p. 61).

Actually, it means "Aardvark" in Swedish, Danish AND Norwegian! Oh well, I'm sure that the Aardvark is one of the Vanir's (Norse Nature Deities) Beasties anyway!
Welcome to Jordsvin's Norse Heathen Pages, formerly the Hammerstead Kindred Web Page. This site contains information on Norse/Germanic pre-Christian Religion, Rune work (including Rune-of-the-Month, my online book on Runes), Seidhr (Norse "shamanism," very roughly speaking), the Hammerstead Kindred Blot Book (all these are linked from the Asatru Information page), and much more! Jordsvin's statement of non-discrimination : I can't imagine how anyone could read my Heathen pages and think that I am some sort of racist, Nazi, or other bigot. I don't approve of our ancient faith being misused as a excuse or cover for such vile misdeeds.

However, their presence on my webpages is not (necessarily) an endorsement of everything you might find on them, nor of the individual(s) responsible for their content.
