The Site for Information on Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism in North America Nichiren Shoshu is the 750 year old orthodox Buddhist denomination centered at Head Temple, Taisekiji, at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Japan. Nichiren Shoshu has temples and centers worldwide and actively propagates the teachings of the True Buddha, Nichiren Daishonin, who made His advent in Japan in 1222. The practice of Nichiren Shoshu brings powerful benefits and positive changes to the lives of those who practice it. The ultimate goals are the attainment of enlightenment by the individual and, through widely spreading True Buddhism, the establishment of a purified world where all people can enjoy happy lives together.
The daily practice consists of chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and reciting portions of the Lotus Sutra to the fundamental Object of Worship called the Gohonzon. There are 6 Temples in the United States and many local area meeting places. All are invited to come learn about Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism and experience its beneficial power. SGI-USA: Fort Worth, Texas SGI-USA Who Was Nichiren Daishonin? Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo Practice ... New Guidelines for Membership Welcome to the Fort Worth Chapter of Soka Gakkai USA. The SGI-USA (Soka Gakkai International USA) is an American Buddhist organization whose mission is to contribute to peace, culture and education based on the philosophy and ideals of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin. Members of the Soka Gakkai practice the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin for their personal enlightenment and for the development of a humane and peaceful society. The Soka Gakkai was founded in Japan in 1930 and has developed into an international organization, Soka Gakkai International (SGI), with members in more than 177 countries. Soka is a Japanese word meaning "value creation"; Gakkai means "society". In 1991, SGI separated from the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood, and is dedicated to the creation of a humanistic and non-authoritarian organization based on equality and respect for all life. Members practice the Buddhism of Nichiren as lay believers. SGI-USA provides legally-sanctioned wedding and memorial services for those members who choose Buddhist ceremonies.

    INTRODUCTION
This pamphlet attempts to outline some key elements of what has become known in the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) as the "temple issue" events and information related to Nichiren Shoshu's attacks on the SGI, and its continued efforts to undermine SGI's movement. When the priesthood of Nichiren Shoshu began a series of measures against the SGI at the beginning of this decade intended to disband and destroy the organization, it may have been shocking and disturbing, but it was not surprising from the standpoint of Nichiren Daishonin's teachings and of history. Many incidents and events going back to the Soka Gakkai's inception before World War II indicated that within the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood there existed the potential for hatred and jealousy toward lay believers. It was evident in the attitude and behavior of more than a few priests. As the Gakkai's growth and influence increased, so did the number of priests who harbored such an attitude until, eventually, it reached the office of high priest.

Behind the SGI’s decision to issue the Gohonzon
On September 7, 1993, adopting a proposal from Sendo Narita, the chief priest of Joen-ji, a temple in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, the SGI announced that it would start issuing Gohonzon, reproduced from a Gohonzon transcribed in 1720 by Nichikan, the 26 th high priest of Taiseki-ji, to its members worldwide. Many SGI members who practiced without the Gohonzon since Nichiren Shoshu’s refusal to grant them the Gohonzon were overjoyed at the news. And many others, filled with hope, have been looking forward to a bright future of the spread of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism ad a flourishing of the Soka Renaissance toward a world that embraces truly humanistic ideals.

Nichiren Buddhism was one of the key sects in medieval Japan. Nichiren (1222-1282) was a Tendai Buddhist monk who left the monastery and invented what was truly a Japanese version of Buddhism; rather than focus on the saving power of the Amida, Nichiren stressed that the Lotus Sutra, upon which Tendai doctrine was based, was the key to all enlightenment and fully embodied the truth of the Buddha Trinity (Vairochana, the Eternal Buddha (in Japanese: Dainichi); Amitabha, the Body of Bliss or Eternal Buddha (which is what the Amidists worshipped); Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha). Nichiren required that all boddhisattvas (those striving to become a Buddha) recite the Lotus sutra rather than the name of Amida; unlike Amidism, Nichiren Buddhism laid emphasis on individual effort rather than salvation through the action of the Buddha. Proclamation of True Buddhism
After leaving Seicho-ji, Rencho went to Kamakura, seat of the shogunate government. Since Kamakura. was the center of political power, it attracted priests from Kyoto, and Buddhist temples had been built there in quick succession. The Jodo, Zen and Ritsu sects were most prevalent, while Tendai, Shingon and Kegon were hardly in evidence. It was here that Rencho, began his studies to determine exactly which sects taught what and how each related to his own enlightenment.
