    Nichiren Buddhism
SGI members follow the teachings of Nichiren, a Buddhist monk who lived in 13th century Japan. Nichiren asserted that every individual has the potential to become enlightened in his or her present lifetime. Buddhist practice is a vehicle of individual empowerment. Each person has within the power to overcome life's inevitable challenges, to live a life of value and become a positive influence in one's community, society and the world. Origins in India Nichiren's philosophy is rooted in the teachings of Shakyamuni (Gautama Siddartha), the historical founder of Buddhism who lived in India some 2,500 years ago. His teachings were recorded as sutras and spread throughout Asia, giving rise to a number of distinct schools of Buddhism...... http://sgi.org/english/Buddhism/nichiren.htm For more information, please visit:

The NBS is a Nichiren Shu outreach community. There has been much discord, contention and strife within the greater Nichiren Buddhist community of late. It is our purpose to foster community, dialogue and trust among all practitioners of Buddhism. In this spirit we maintain a non-sectarian atmosphere within our community. All are welcome to participate with us in our ceremonies, study sessions and dialogues regardless of existing belief. We hold dear the principles of an open free society, we do not discriminate against any person for race, sex, sexual orientation, nationality or religion. We believe that we are all the Children of the Buddha, and to injure another is to injure ourselves.

In fact, before reading this book I was confused on certain aspects of this practice which I was able to understand afterwards. It was also very comforting in terms of dealing with a recent suicide of a friend, knowing that for lifetimes to come I will always be with my friends and family again. Life and death discussed in an open and refreshing manner. This in-depth look at the very nature of life and death portrays the extensive knowledge and wisdom of Dr. Ikeda on the title subject. I found it to be fascinating and informative and would highly recommend a look at this profound view of our own humanity. Deeply thought-provoking and enlightening This thought-provoking book is a clear, concise introduction to life and death as viewed by Buddhism. Daisaku Ikeda writes that Buddhist philosophy and its practice provide a vehicle by which people can understand the essence of the universe and therefore surmount the anger, despair, greed, and envy that often arise from ignorance about the true nature of life. Daisaku Ikeda finds a particularly relevant message - that enlightenment can be found in the daily lives of ordinary people - in the teachings of the thirteenth-century Japanese Buddhist sage Nichiren.

The list does not include the "new religions" and lay organizations also based on Nichiren Buddhism, only the tradtional religious schools. Most schools mentioned here are part of Nichiren Shu. The name of the school derived from the name of each disciple has been put into brackets [ ]. The name of the temple founded by a particular disciple of priest has been put into parenthesis. For example, in the case of the first linege of Nissho, "Hamada, Myohokeji," Myohokeji is the name of the temple founded, and Hamada is the area in which the temple is located. The principle and other major disciplesfrom the area, have been emphasized in bold lettering. If not otherwise menioend or note, the lineage or school is today part of Nichiren Shu.
