Research Agenda Project 1: Research on Nichiren Buddhism This project involves conducting academic research on the doctrine and philosophy of Nichiren Daishonin including a literary study of Nichiren Daishionin Gosho Zenshu (The Complete Works of Nichiren Daishonin). In addition to the research on the subsequent development of Nichiren's doctrine and philosophy, the project also extends to studying the doctrinal, philosophical and cultural significance of the movement of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) as the modern day development of Nichiren Buddhism. Research in this area has led to the publication of Shumon mondai o kangaeru (On the Priesthood Problem) by Masahiro Kobayashi, Daisan Bunmei Sha, 1991, Nichiren Daishonin no gosho o yomuJo (On Reading the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin Part 1, Daisan Bunmei Sha, 1996, and Makiguchi Tsunesaburo no dhukyo undo (Tsunesaburo Makiguchi's Religious Movement) by Koichi Miyata, Daisan Bunmei Sha, 1993).

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
In the thirteenth century a Japanese monk named Nichiren (1222-1282) was responsible for bringing a new perspective to the practice of Buddhism. The focus for this practice came to rest on reciting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo , which can be roughly translated as 'Honor to the Lotus Sutra of the True Teaching'. Nichiren believed that the essence of the Buddha's teachings resided in the Lotus Sutra, a key text of Mahayana Buddhism.
Humble Beginnings Nichiren (which means 'Sun Lotus') was born the son of a fisherman in 1222. At fifteen he was ordained as a monk and began to study intensively. He came to believe that a series of national calamities that had befallen Japan at that time was a result of lack of devotion and following false Buddhist doctrines. His emphasis on reciting

Nichiren Buddhism?
Why this essay is a find
With any subject, the first things you learn are the raw basics, the alphabet of the subject. Samsara = bad, Nirvana = good, that sort of thing. Generally, this is very boring, but, at the end of it, you have a comfortable feeling of ‘getting’ the subject - of standing on rock. Then, suddenly, the ground beneath your feet starts to shake, and then it starts to run. The simple truths you started out with shift and come together in new and intricate patterns. They alter shape, and sometimes substance. “Samsara is nirvana and nirvana samsara. There is not the slightest difference between the two.”
At this point, you can go one of two ways. Either you fall flat on your face and abandon the subject - physics, chemistry, maths, and miscellaneous others all ended this way for me - or you somehow pick up your feet and run with it. Geekish as it sounds, this is the part where the subject becomes exciting. You’re always running, in the middle of earthquakes and avalanches, in pursuit of some shape-shifting thing that is always a few paces ahead. You’re always on the brink of knowledge.
When I reached this point, I started working on this essay, as an antidote to how boring Buddhism suddenly seemed to have become. An essay about the nature of a sect I knew next to nothing about, and which was not on the exam syllabus, seemed like the ideal solution. It worked better than I thought it would - the essay became about the nature of Buddhism itself. I’m not sure that the answer that this essay offers - the centrality of the enlightenment experience - is the right one. However, the Find, for me, was the discovery of the question. It brought me back to the concept of pursuit - I did feel, in writing it, that I was literally chasing Buddhism - and to that sense of being on the brink of knowledge of ‘the heart of the matter’. It is a Find for me because it crystallised my experience of studying Buddhism.

NICHIREN BUDDHISM, AFFIRMING MY HAPPINESS.
I am a converted Buddhist. One of the most important steps I've made in my life was converting to Nichiren Buddhism. I'm also a proud SGI member. SGI stands for Soka Gakkai International , a non-profit Buddhist (12 million members) organization that promotes absolute peace and tolerance for all individual desires. I chant Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo to be happy, and I am. For years, I pursued to find the faith that best suited me, one that has no judgments and no discrimination. Buddhism has taught me to realize happiness by seeking within myself and having compassion and peace for others. Cause and Effect is all I that need to be content in this lifetime. Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo Nichiren Buddhism
was founded by Nichiren, a Japanese monk who realized that Buddhahood is accessible to everyone and is a mental state of positivity, compassion, and happiness. This faith is based on a text called the Lotus Sutra, the revelation of the equality of all people regardless of age, race, sex, education or social status as asserted by Siddhartha Gautama (Aka. Shakyamuni). He taught that theres a special nature that we all possess and can utilize for our own happiness. And we too can become Buddhas.

Nichiren Buddhism Nichiren was a Buddhist monk (1222-1282) who taught a very popular form of Buddhism, perhaps the only major sect which developed in Japan. It is rigorously critical of non-believers; it seeks to convert the unconverted; it's values have been compared to those of Protestantism, especially Calvinism; and it is strongly nationalistic. In modern Japan, one sect of Nichiren Buddhism, Soka Gakkai, has been particularly active. It seems to have reached its maximum growth in the 1960s, but is active abroad too. It founded a political party, the Komeito (Clean Government Party), which is now officially separate from the sect. Click to find this website's homepage Authored by Thomas A. Stanley and R.T.A. Nichiren Buddhism
Nichiren Buddhism is a branch of Buddhism based on the teachings of the 13th century Buddhist monk named Nichiren In his priestly studies, Nichiren discovered that the highest teachings of the Buddha Sakyamuni (563?-483?BC) were to be found in the Lotus Sutra . The mantra he expounded, " Namu Myoho Renge Kyo ," expresses his devotion to that body of teachings, and is chanted by his followers to this day. In his life he stridently believed that the contemporary teachings of Buddhism taught by other sects (like Zen ) were mistaken in their interpretations of the correct path to enlightenment and therefore refuted them publicly and vociferously. In doing so, he provoked the ire of the ruling Japanese feudal lords, and was subjected to exiles and persecutions for his propagation efforts. His personal communications and writings to his followers (called "Honorable Writings," or "Gosho") detail his view of the correct form of practice for the "Latter Day of the Law" (mappo), and many are preserved to this day. In marked contrast to other Buddhist schools, Nichiren Buddhists believe that personal enlightenment can be reached in a single lifetime. Central to their practice of "Daimoku" is the repeated recitation of the phrase, "
