He organized a conference for "LGBTQ" members of his religious faith. But the fact that Alam is a Muslim and the nearly 40 people who attended worship in the Islamic tradition made this convention anything but routine. To weed out homophobes who might seek to invade it, Alam interviewed each interested person for an hour over the phone. He revealed the meeting's Boston location to selected participants only a week before it occurred. "If most Muslims hear about us, they think we're a joke," Alam said. The report by the Council on American-Islamic Relations attributed the increase to such factors as Muslim-bashing on radio talk shows and tensions surrounding the war in Iraq. The group said it received 1,019 complaints from Muslims last year concerning discriminatory or violent actions, up from 602 the year before. The biggest number of incidents had to do with employment and the refusal to accommodate religious practices. But there were 93 reported hate crimes, more than double the total in 2002. Aldeeb Abu-Sahlieh* August 1998 * Doctor of law and graduate in political sciences. Staff legal adviser in charge of Arab and Islamic Law, Swiss Institute of Comparative Law, Lausanne. Introduction Muslims constitute the major religious group in the world that practice male and female circumcision. If we wish to abolish these two practices, we first have to know why Muslims mutilate their children. When speaking with Muslims about male circumcision, which nearly all Muslims practice, the first argument they invoke is religion. Then they try to make light of the situation by saying that it is more beautiful and more efficient to have a circumcised penis. Then come the hygienic and scientific arguments it is cleaner and safer (protection against cancer and AIDS). You will also find that religion is the foremost argument used by Jews in favor of circumcision. In fact, Muslims and Jews have the same concept of religion: God regulates human behavior through religious laws revealed through the prophets. God is supposed to know better than human beings what is good and what is bad. Men and Women have to obey, and religious authorities will force them to do so. Quoting Deuteronomy 13:1 and 29:28 and Leviticus 23:14, Maimonides (died 1204) said that those who do not accept God's commands as valid for every time and every place have to be killed by strangulation. Eight centuries later, Al-Sha'rawi, an Egyptian famous Sheik and former minister, said that Muslims who refuse to abide to God's laws should be killed. For this reason, instead of saying Judeo-Christian culture, one should say Judeo-Islamic Culture.

Muslims Under Progress... May 06, 2004 On authority I was witness to a debate with a couple of friends a few days ago on the issue of taqlid and following a particular madhab . One of them was duly observant of adhereing to a particular school (Hanafi in this case); the other, though respectful of particular opinions, saw no reason to restrict oneself unduly (he was what I would describe as Ahl-e-Hadith This conversation strangely a calm affair, and without the usual mud-flinging had me thinking. I would like to break one side (the Traditionalist) of the argument down. I believe it runs like this: 1. An individual Muslim (the "lay" Muslim) cannot determine, for himself, what is and isn't "Islam" (in this case, what is and isn't 'legal'; or what is and isn't halal or haram etc., as well as all the other classifications regarding obligations, duties and so on). 2. For this he needs to ask a specialist (a scholar of an Islamic discipline, usually someone trained in law), i.e. someone who is qualified to give an opinion. 3. But he must ask the "correct" specialist.
