141. LDS-PHIL INFORMATION
Discussion of philosophy of religion, philosophical theology, and others issues of religion and philosophy from within the context of the mormon religion.
http://www.nd.edu/~rpotter/ldsphil.html
LDS-PHIL
LDS-PHIL is an email discussion group designed for the discussion of philosophy of religion, philosophical theology, and others issues of religion and philosophy from within the context of the Mormon religion. The Mormon religion has a unique theological framework (e.g. the belief that God the Father is embodied) and this framework has not received much philosophical attention from professional philosophers. Thus, many of us who pursue philosophical research have looked for a forum in which we could apply our philosophical tools to analyze and defend our religious beliefs. LDS-PHIL is not a forum for the examination of all the possible defeaters of Mormon religious beliefs. There are already other forums which satisfy this role. It is expected that respect for Mormon beliefs will be upheld, and that discussion will proceed within that context. However, it is not expected that a legitimate philosophical issue which arises for Mormon theology will be avoided merely because it requires the interlocutors to examine the possibility that some other than the perceived orthodoxy might be correct. It is the conviction of the listowner that a frank discussion in the atmosphere of tolerance is more likely to lead to enlightenment on the seminal truths in Mormon theology. Nonetheless, direct attacks on Church leaders and policies will not be tolerated as part of this forum.

142. Challenging The Book Of Mormon
CHALLENGING THE BOOK OF mormon. by Stephen F. Cannon. The challenge that the Book of mormon makes to the world is that of duplication.

CHALLENGING
THE BOOK OF MORMON
by Stephen F. Cannon Books are written, speeches are given and hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent annually to promote this volume as scripture and history. Most recently, while perusing the Mormon websites on the Internet, I came across a challenge issued to prove that the Book of Mormon is both scripture and history. This writer had heard many of the arguments before, but this was the first time they had been found all in one place and issued as a challenge. As I read through the statements, I decided to answer them as a body, as they were presented. My prayer is that these answers will find their way to the maximum number of people so when Mormon missionaries come calling with a smile and a free copy of the Book of Mormon, truth will prevail. Many of these statements are very misleading. Taken the way they are phrased, without clarification, grants some LDS presuppositions. When discussing doctrinal or historical points with Mormons, one must be careful to define terms. Mormons use the same terms as orthodox Christians, but define them differently. The Challenge Because the book complies with every one of the following conditions, in order to produce a similar record, one must comply with the same conditions.

About this page

A cult of Christianity
A cult of Christianity is a group of people, which claiming to be Christian, embraces a particular doctrinal system taught by an individual leader, group of leaders, or organization, which (system) denies (either explicitly or implicitly) one or more of the central doctrines of the Christian faith as taught in the sixty-six books of the Bible. Source: Alan Gomes, ''Unmasking The Cults'' See also: Cult - A Theological Definition
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) fits this description, making it a pseudo-Christian religion. That is, the history, theology and practices of Mormonism show the religious movement to be outside of orthodox Christianity
While the claims of Mormonism must be firmly rejected, Christians should reach out to Mormons with the "gentleness and respect" 1 Peter 3:15 calls for, "in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth..." (

Shows the contradiction of biblical polygamy in mormon history, concerning its acceptance and shunning.

The Inconsistent of the Mormon's Doctrine of Polygamy
By David R. Kenney The book of Exodus contains an important event in the life of Moses. In Exodus 4:24-26 we see an example of the importance of keeping a covenant with God and the peril of neglect. Circumcision of a male was the symbol of God's covenant with the descendants of Abraham. All male children were to be circumcised on the eighth day (Gen. 17:9-14). Moses was approached by God to go to Egypt to lead the Israelites out of bondage. God sent Moses' brother Aaron with him since Moses complained he was a poor speaker (Ex. 4:10, 14). Before Moses left to go to Egypt, his wife Zipporah bore him a son named Eliezer. Zipporah was a Midianite, thus not concerned with the covenant made with Abraham's descendants. Moses did not insist on the child's circumcision and neglected to keep the covenant. As great a man as Moses was, God would have killed him for neglecting to keep the covenant. This short passage teaches us lessons about the importance of doing what we should, not procrastinating, and choosing a faithful companion who has respect for the law of God. One of the distinguishing doctrines of Mormonism is polygamy. Polygamy is defined as having more than one husband or wife at one time. Polygamy originated not with God, but with a man named Lamech (Gen. 4:19).

In support of the Sesquicentennial Mormon Trail Wagon Trek, the Utah Education Network (UEN) was designated the official, educational web site for the Mormon Trail Re-enactment. As such, UEN, in partnership with the Utah State Office of Education, BYU Public School Partnership, Heritage Gateways Ltd., and the Mormon Trail Wagon Train - 150 Years, Inc. has created an educational, interactive online project site for students, teachers and families that followed the trek as it unfolded and continues to provide a database of historical data. The Heritage Gateways site features historical diaries, excerpts from published books such as I Walked to Zion, articles, commentaries, maps and video clips all reflecting the life and times of those early pioneers. The site is also a rich source for scholarly writings, links to other Internet resources, and a comprehensive bibliography of related writings, maps and organizations all related to the study of the pioneers, as well as instructions on how to build an authentic handcart. For the teacher in the classroom, this online project has high quality lesson plans and activities appropriate for elementary, middle school and high school students plus a special section featuring original student art work depicting life as a pioneer. Young people might especially enjoy reading stories of the children who experienced the trek first-hand 150 years ago in the Trail Pioneers section.

Distribution and Habitat
A. simplex continental distribution map Wyoming distribution map The Mormon cricket, a shieldbacked katydid (family Tettigoniidae, subfamily Decticinae) and not a true cricket, lives in western North America in rangeland dominated by sagebrush and forbs. Large populations develop in the open sagebrush-grass associations of the Great Basin and of mountain ranges. In the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, small resident populations occur from 6,500 feet in forest openings to above 11,000 feet in the alpine tundra.
Economic Importance
Mormon crickets damage forage plants on rangeland and cultivated crops in the path of their migrations. The adult Mormon cricket is a large insect; males average 3,400 mg live weight and females 4,100 mg (dry weight: males 960 mg, females 1,330 mg). Feeding tests demonstrate that during its nymphal period and 20 days of adult life, an average Mormon cricket consumes 3,518 mg of vegetation (dry weight). Calculations based on this figure indicate that at a density of one per square yard the Mormon cricket consumes an amount of rangeland forage equal to 38 pounds dry weight per acre. Because of their migratory habit, Mormon crickets may be present in a particular site for no more than three or four days. In this short time, their damage to rangeland is perceptible but not measurable by standard quantitative techniques. The Mormon cricket breeds only infrequently in cultivated fields, but migrating bands of nymphs or adults may completely destroy fields of sugarbeets, small grains, and alfalfa. During the 1937 outbreak, crop damage in Montana amounted to $500,000 and in Wyoming to $383,000.

(Answer last edited on Apr 1, 04)
That really depends on what your definition of "Christian" is.
If you define "Christian" as one who "[professes] belief in Jesus as Christ or [follows] the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus" as the American Heritage Dictionary does, then yes the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a Christian denomination. Followers of the Church profess a belief in Jesus as the Christ and the leaders of the church for nearly 200 years have taught Christian principles (such as loving your neighbour, being redeemed from sin and putting faith in God). If you define "Christian" as one who accepts tenets of traditional Christianity (such as the trinity, the infallibility and exclusivity of the Bible, etc), then no the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not a Christan denomination.
