In 1847, Brigham Young and the first party of Mormon emigrants reached the Salt Lake Valley. The story of the Mormon exodus from the mid-west to Salt Lake has become well-known, but most tourists are still curious about Mormon culture and about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or LDS Church), as the Christian religion is officially known. Some visitors want to know about the earliest Mormons who practiced polygamy, minted their own money, and made their own laws - all of which are forbidden by the LDS church today. Others take note of the lasting impression made by the "second wave" of Mormons; hundreds of Europeans who converted to Mormonism in the mid-1800's, and left their home countries to travel to Utah. Following the routes of earlier explorers, Mormon pioneers formed the settlement and transportation patterns of the state. Differences in ancestry and economic status marked the architectural and agricultural styles in various areas. For all Utahns, members of the LDS church or not, Mormonism is a unique heritage which has shaped the past, and continues to impact the state's future. Today, approximately 70% of Utah's residents are members of the LDS church. Mormonism today is a part of everyday life throughout the world, but because of the concentration of LDS church members in Utah, Mormon culture distinguishes the area. Many Utahns help shape public issues in accordance with standards and ideals of their spiritual beliefs. The result is a modern, forward-thinking state, known for citizens who believe in community and family values, volunteerism, and civic pride.

, in the heart of Salt Lake City , Utah, is the home of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Here, at the "crossroads of the West," the choir has sung the sacred hymns of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the great choral works of the masters for nearly a century and a half. History of the Choir
In 1846, the Mormons were searching for a place where they could freely worship God. On their westward trek across the vast American continent, the pioneers often broke the prairie's stillness with the sound of their voices. Singing hymns around the campfire became a nightly custom. One of these hymns, its words written as the pioneers made their westward journey, was "Come, Come, Ye Saints" by William Clayton. It retains today an exalted place in the repertoire of the Tabernacle Choir:
    And should we die before
    Our journey's through,
    Happy day! All is well!
    And sorrow, too;
With the just we shall dwell!
On July 24, 1847, when the first group of Mormon pioneers had crossed the rugged Wasatch Mountains into the wide valley of the Great Salt Lake, their leader, Brigham Young, looked long and earnestly at what he saw. Then he said, "It is enough. This is the right place." It was here, a month later, that the Tabernacle Choir had it beginnings.

http://www.nephi.org/adventures/
Book of Mormon Stories Welcome to Book of Mormon Adventures a place that I'd like to dedicate a home to a small, but well-loved genre of historical fiction. LDS historical fiction is based on actual events or settings, but can use fictionalized characters or take artistic license to tell a story. The stories could be about anything that's familiar to a Latter-day Saint audience. This website focuses primarily on the ones that revolve around events, characters and settings from The Book of Mormon. There are a lot of great books out there that have already been written, but they are hard to find, or few people even know about them! There are also, I'm sure, many aspiring or unknown writers who have written their own stories in the genre. Hopefully authors, amateurs and visitors can all find a small gathering here. LDS Historical Fiction I think Brother Miller describes the genre best in his preface to Lehi's Legacy "The work is fiction, or perhaps, enhanced, part-fiction, in that it strongly adheres to the narrative as related or implied in the Book of Mormon text. This treatment was chosen in order to bring to life the real players of the early Book of Mormon story by word-painting them into a living, moving panorama for its readers. Their character, interests, desires, fears, hopes, experiences and faith are revealed, so that the people of our times can come to appreciate that the cast, who act on the stage of the beginning Book of Mormon drama, are indeed genuine, human men and women, much like we are in modern times today. And thereby, bring into being, an increased empathy that can enhance the impact this inspired book has on the faith of its readers."

The Mormon Pioneer Trail
On February 4, 1846 (150 years ago), the first of the Mormons left Nauvoo, Illinois and headed west on what has become known as the Mormon Trail. After stopping for the winter of 1846-47 at Winter Quarters (now Omaha, Nebraska), they traveled on to what is now Salt Lake City, Utah, with the first company of pioneers arriving on July 24, 1847. An estimate 68,000 pioneers followed them during the next 22 years.
In commemoration of these pioneers and the trail they made and traveled, many sesquicentennial events are planned in 1996 and 1997. This page is designed to be a central source for information about these events and related activities, as well as other items such as a Mormon trail poem by Russell M. Ledger , titled For the Children
The Faith of the Pioneers
It is good to look to the past to gain appreciation for the present and perspective for the future. It is good to look upon the virtues of those who have gone before, to gain strength for whatever lies ahead. It is good to reflect upon the work of those who labored so hard and gained so little in this world, but out of whose dreams and early plans, so well nurtured, has come a great harvest of which we are the beneficiaries. Their tremendous example can become a compelling motivation for us all, for each of us is a pioneer...and many of us pioneer daily.

A Mormon bishop, a Catholic priest, and a TV evangelist were fishing from a boat in the middle of a small lake. The priest realized that he'd left his tackle box in his car, and, not wanting to disturb the other two, got out of the boat and walked over the water to the shore, got his gear, walked back, and started fishing. An hour or so passed, and the bishop began to feel a little hungry. His lunch was back in his car, though. . . . So, he got out of the boat, walked over the water, got his lunch, came back, and nibbled on his sandwich. The evangelist, not to be outdone, decided that he'd best go for a walk, too. He mumbled something about going to the bathroom, stood up, stepped over the side of the boat . . . and splashed into the lake. The priest, chuckling, said to the bishop, "Think we should've told him about those submerged rocks?" Said the bishop, "what rocks" Michael.

The Mormon Trail
The Mormons settled at Commerce, Illinois, in the late 1830's. They renamed it Nauvoo which is Hebrew for "beautiful." It was incorporated in December 1839 and had a population of 20,000 by 1844. Friction with other settlers resulted in the murder of the Mormon leader Joseph Smith in 1844. Ever-worsening conditions led the Mormons to leave Nauvoo in February 1846. In wagons pulled by oxen and laden with all their possessions, about 400 families began crossing the Mississippi River. They gathered near Montrose on the Iowa side of the river, and began their trek on March 1, 1846. The weather wasn't favorable for a journey across southern Iowa, but since they were afraid they would be attacked in the spring, they had no choice but to head west. They encountered a great deal of rain, snow, and sleet which made for very difficult travel. When they left the area of present-day Appanoose County, they crossed into a part of the Iowa Territory that had not been settled. They had no established roads to follow, so blazed their own trail. On April 24, 1846, the Pioneer company, lead by Brigham Young, reached Garden Grove in Decatur County. They made their first semi-permanent camp here on the Weldon Fork of the Grand River. Brigham Young assigned 359 able-bodied men to build the site and within two weeks log cabins were built, wells dug, fences put up, and crops planted. By May 13 all the work had been done and some of the Saints returned to Nauvoo to bring their families back.

The Mormon/Battlestar Galactica Connection!
In the late 60's, Glen Larson pitched a TV show called Adam's Ark around the same time that Star Trek was ending. In it, Larson wanted to take biblical themes and set them out in space. While no one was interested in that particular project, Larson was a successful creator, writer or producer on such TV shows as It Takes a Thief, McCloud, The Six Million Dollar Man, Quincy, The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, B.J. and the Bear, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Magnum PI, The Fall Guy, Knight Rider and Manimal. Star Wars exploded into the world in 1977 and as everyone and his brother tried to capitalize on it's success, something like Larson's old pitch suddenly seemed like a great idea. ABC originally planned to have Battlestar Galactica as a series of two-hour movies, following a big, three-hour premiere, but they were impressed enough to order it up as a weekly hour-long series. It premiered on ABC in September of 1978, after being seen as a theatrical release in Canada and Europe in July of that year. The show was cancelled after just 24 episodes in April of '79. Due to fan pressure, it was revived as Galactica 1980 (in 1980...duh), but this only lasted for 10 episodes. The opening prologue reads, "There are those who believe that life here began out there, far across the universe, with tribes of human who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians, or the Toltecs, or the Mayans. They may have been the architects of the great pyramids, or the lost civilizations of Lemuria or Atlantis. Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man who even now fight to survive far, far away, amongst the stars."
