This site is most useful to those who have had members of their family tree that belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the Mormon migration period of 1847-1868.
This site will show you step-by-step on how to find those pioneer ancestors you have been wondering about.

23. Fundamentalist Or Polygamy-Practicing Mormon Groups
Institute for the Study of American Religion essay describing the rise, demise, and revivals of polygamy in mormon history.
http://americanreligion.org/cultwtch/polygamy.html
FUNDAMENTALIST OR POLYGAMY-PRACTICING
MORMON GROUPS
In 1822 the United States government passed the Edmunds Law outlawing polygamy. Eight years later the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints withdrew its support of polygamy and threatened excommunication to any who practiced it. In spite of the Church's stance, some Mormons continued in the practice. Many polygamists moved to Mexico because of the relative liberality of Mexican law. Polygamy experienced a revival in the 1930s following the publication of the claims of Lorin C. Woolley. Woolley claimed that on the evening of September 27, 1886, John Taylor, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, while staying at the Woolley home in Centerville, Utah, received a spirit visitation from Joseph Smith, Jr., the Church's founder. Smith's revelation concerned the continuance of plural marriage, and Taylor extracted a promise from all present that they would defend, sustain, and uphold the principle. The group covenanted together that no year would pass without children being born according to "the principle." Later, according to Woolley, Taylor conferred the priesthood on five men, including Woolley and his father. At the time of the publication of the claim, all the men involved in the story except Lorin Woolley were dead. Only when he was the only one left, did Woolley assert any prerogatives based on Taylor's actions. He gathered followers and appointed a seven-member council to which he passed authority to govern the Church. Woolley died in 1934 and was succeeded by J. Leslie Broadbent. Broadbent lived only a short time before he was succeeded by John Y. Barlow.

    The Mormon Name Generator
They're a funny old bunch, those latter day saints. Rather than picking names from their heritage, or the Bible, the Utah Mormons tend to make them up. Sometimes they'll combine the parents' names into one (BenDonna, for example). Other times it's impossible to quite understand what their parents were thinking; names like Zestpool and Zon'tl aren't uncommon. We can understand why you might be jealous of names like these. After all, they are far more interesting and exciting than your own. Luckily, help is at hand with the Mormon Name Generator; simply indicate your first name, last name and your gender preference below, and we'll Mormonise your moniker. http://www.xmission.com/~research/about/
Mormon Origins Purpose The purpose of this Web Site is to make available historical information and/or documents relating to Mormon origins. Various research methods can be used to explore the beginnings of Mormonism in America. The Mormon religion is based upon the story and religious teachings of Joseph Smith. Smith was the founding prophet and first elder/president of the church. The original church was established in western New York state on 6 April 1830 in the Township of Manchester, Ontario County, New York (new research has found this to be the organizational site). Today the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS church) has the most members of those who follow Joseph Smith's teachings, over eleven million members worldwide. This is a non-proselyting Web Site. The format of this Web Site may be changed periodically. Mormon Origins was created under the direction of H. Michael Marquardt, Author and Research Consultant, Latter-day Saint History. This site intends to provide through high standards of scholarship material that will assist and make understandable some areas in the field of Mormon studies. H. Michael Marquardt is an independent researcher.
