In essence, so-called "Messianic Jewish" groups claim that they represent a "completed form of Judaism" or "completed form of Jewishness" or "Biblical Judaism." In actuality, self-styled "Messianic Judaism" is a form of Christianity that mimics rabbinic Judaism. (The question of whether such groups are Christian cults is a Christian problem.) Our goal here is to convey the understanding that Judaism and Christianity are two separate faith systems. A Christian who was born Jewish may call his belief by any name but it is still Christianity, not Judaism. There are radical differences between Judaism and Christianity. What makes Christianity Christian is its belief in "Jesus Christ: Son of God, God incarnate." What makes the Christian movement called "Messianic Judaism" Christian is its belief in "Jesus Christ: Son of God, God incarnate. What makes Judaism Jewish is Israel's covenantal relationship with God expressed through God's instructions to Moses on Mount Sinai, both Written and Oral.

UMJC defines Messianic Judaism, begins seminary By Donita Painter September 2002 ORLANDO, Fla. —Two landmark decisions have been made by the Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations. Just before the union’s annual conference, held in Orlando, July 31-August 3, delegates agreed to adopt an official definition of Messianic Judaism and develop an accredited, graduate-level seminary program. About 70 UMJC delegates approved a statement defining Messianic Judaism as a "movement of Jewish congregations and congregation-like groupings committed to Yeshua the Messiah that embrace the covenantal responsibility of Jewish life and identity rooted in Torah, expressed in tradition, and renewed and applied in the context of the New Covenant." There were two dissenters in the July 31 vote, said Elliot Klayman, UMJC secretary. "We are not trying to impose this on the rest of the world," said Russ Resnik, UMJC general secretary. "This is what we understand as our calling. We are trying to define ourselves, not let someone else define us." Resnik said the definition came from concerns that the "label Messianic Judaism has been used to cover many religious trends."

Ellen Kavanaugh Without a solid foundation built on G-d's TaNaKh (sadly referred to as "old testament' within the church), many in the mainstream Christian churches have been teaching that the church replaces Israel in G-d's plan; many teach that the promised earthly messianic kingdom has been replaced with a spiritual kingdom for the church; most believe that obeying G-d's Holy Torah (law) is somehow useless or irrelevant in our lives even likening Torah obedience to "earning" the free gift of salvation. These beliefs result from interpreting the Brit Chadasha (new testament) apart from it's TaNaKh foundation. Sadly the church seems to believe it can exist apart from its TaNaKh foundation and Jewish roots. Such church teachings reflect a non-Jewish mindset and are not considered part of Messianic Judaism. But Aren't Messianic Jews And Hebrew Christians The Same Thing? As a Believer , my outlook is shaped by my interpretation of Scripture. Even among Believers, there are vast differences in theology, world view and how it all fits together. Let me define my own views a little bit. I am a Spirit-Filled Believer. ( Acts 2:4 I believe that the Bible is the true, literal Word of the one true God. ( 2 Timothy 3:16 I believe that God is composed of three parts, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is expressed with different metaphors: an egg, three parts of one complete whole (shell, white and yolk) or a family- father, mother, child. ( Matthew 28:9 I believe that supernatural occurrences as detailed in the Bible still happen today. This defines a "charismatic" viewpoint. ( Mark 16:17, Acts 19:6, 1 Corinthians 12 I am a Messianic Jew , and am working towards incorporating more of that heritage into my life on a daily basis. I believe that we have a special role to fulfill in the end-times and are rising up to take our place as the remnant that God has promised throughout the scriptures. ( Romans 11 I also believe that Believers have allowed Satan to distort the Word of God and steal our peace and our victory for long enough. Average review score: "The Enduring Paradox" is a collection of scholary but clear essays addressing theological and practical questions of interest to Messianic Jews and students of Scripture in general. The essayists include some big guns in the evangelical world, including Walter Kaiser and Louis Goldberg, as well as a number of Messianic Judaism's scholars. The editor, John Fisher (and his wife Patrice) contributes the greatest number of essays. The book is divided into three sections, (1) Messianic Jewish Theology, (2) Messianic Jews and Israel, and (3) Practical Issues for Messianic Jews and Non-Jews. There is much to be praised in this book. Patrice Fisher's chart on page 178, distinguishing between native-born Jews, Godfearers, Foreigners, and Pagans is simple but superb in its clarity. Lawrence Rich's chapter on "Jewish Practice and Identity in the Book of Acts" is worth the purchase price of the book. On the negative side, John Fisher's chapter about, "Covenant, Fulfillment, and Judaism in Hebrews" seems a bit of a stretch.
