Messianic Judaism as a proper name refers to a group of various religious movements, self-identified as Jewish , but being predominantly evangelical Christian in beliefs. Typical of the movement are the Jews for Jesus , whose aim is to educate Evangelicals concerning the Jewish origins of their Christian faith, and to convert Jews to mainstream evangelical christianity. Even though many Messianic Jews are ethnically Jewish, they are not considered part of the Jewish community by any mainstream Judaic nor any other Jewish religious groups. This is colloquial terminology, as many, diverse religious groups have messianic beliefs which are not compatible with what has come to be commonly referred to as Messianic Judaism. Most notably, Rabbinic Judaism, including all the modern Jewish denominations , have a variety of beliefs about a future messianic era. Some Jewish groups whose beliefs stress the messianic aspects are known in the literature as "messianic Jews", but that is not the topic of this article. What in the world is Messianic Judaism?
Messianic Judaism, simply put, is a Biblically-based movement of Jewish people who have come to believe in Yeshua (Jesus Christ) as the promised Jewish Messiah of Israel. Messianic Jewish synagogues, consisting of both Jews and Gentiles (who are "grafted in" through the atoning blood of Messiah Yeshua), have sprung up all over the world, and are growing at a phenomenal rate. We believe the Bible to be one, continuous "God-breathed" document, rather than two separate entities in which one superseded the other. Yeshua: The Hebrew word for Jesus
We, at The Refiner's Fire, believe that Messianic Jewish believers more closely worship God the way He WANTS to be worshipped, than any other "religion", because we see the Bible as one, continuous Covenant, as opposed to two separate Testaments in which one supersedes the other. We realize that our Savior, Yeshua, was a Torah observant, tallit wearing, synagogue attending, feast-keeping, kosher Jew, and we therefore try to view the entire Bible through a "Hebrew mindset". We believe that Yeshua was God Incarnate; that He was predicted by, and succeeded, Moses; that He was foreshadowed throughout the Tanach ("Old Testament"); and that He did NOT "do away with" the Law/Torah, as He clearly stated in Matthew 5:17-18.

Further Explanation of Messianic Judaism By Rabbi Loren Jacobs My name is Loren Jacobs. I'm typical of a growing number of Jewish people today. I grew up in a Jewish home, went to synagogue, and had my bar mitzvah, but I felt that something spiritual was missing from my life. As a teenager I started investigating Eastern philosophy. When I went to Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois I studied western philosophy. It was during college that I started reading the Bible for the first time on my own. Within a very short time my life was completely revolutionized and hasn't been the same since. What was it that transformed me? I had a supernatural encounter with the Jewish Messiah. He opened up a whole new dimension of spirituality to my life that I never dreamed possible. He enabled me to develop a personal relationship with the God of Israel that is still going strong twenty years later. I discovered the Messiah, who came to earth 2000 years ago, died in the city of Jerusalem on Passover, but miraculously came back to life. I encountered Yeshua - Jesus of Nazareth. Many Jewish people are looking for a deeper sense of spirituality. They are looking for it in all kinds of places - the occult, psychics, and the new age movement. Maybe that's you - maybe you are searching for something more. It might come as a surprise to learn that you don't have to leave the realm of Judaism in order to meet that need!

MESSIANIC JUDAISM
One of the 13 articles of Jewish faith drafted by Maimonides states:
" I believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Messiah;
and, though he tarry, I will wait daily for his coming. "

Jewish people have long awaited the coming of the Messiah. In fact, over the centuries there have been many messianic pretenders who have come on the scene and led many of our people astray. Two noteworthy pretenders were bar Koziba and Shabatai Tsvi. Bar Koziba became known as bar Kochba [Son of Koziba to Son of the Star; a messianic title referencing the verse in Torah that says a star shall rise to rule...Nu. 24:17]. Bar Koziba led the revolt against Rome in the 2nd Century. He was proclaimed Messiah by the famous Rabbi Akiva. It is a shame that Akiva can still be looked to as a great sage and Rabbi when he was so deluded and led so many of Israel astray. Shabatai Tsvi is seen as the greatest phony who ever rose to the claim. The "greatest" I say for he led the most astray. He lived during the 7th century. Much can be read of him. He converted to Islam on pain of death and disappeared off the historical scene.
Most recently the late Rabbi Schneerson of Chassidic fame claims the title of most recent Messianic pretender. Though he himself didn't claim Messianic status, many of his followers attributed the status to him. His death was even expected to precede a resurrection!

What is Messianic Judaism?
Because of policy decision changes reflected in several position papers recently released by the leadership of the Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations (UMJC)— changes which we believe divide the true Body of Messiah and relegate the Gentile members of Messianic Jewish congregations to the status of second-class citizens —this page is in the process of being edited with some significant changes. We should have these changes complete in a few days. Please check back soon. (02/08/04) With a very few “ultra-Orthodox” exceptions (as well as the UMJC, it now seems), the ultimate goal of the Messianic Restoration movement seems to be the reunification of the twelve tribes of Israel into a single nation which recognizes Yeshua of Nazareth as Mashiach (Messiah) and King, with those who wish to do so living securely within the borders of her original land grant from God, and for non-Jewish Believers in the Mashiach to join with them as a unified Body of Mashiach. Modern Messianic Judaism is the fulfillment of that which was spoken of by the ancient Prophets: a Restoration Movement of Jewish people who believe that Yeshua of Natzeret (Jesus of Nazareth) is the promised Messiah of Israel, and the Savior of the world. He is the One Whom the prophets in the Hebrew Scriptures told us was to come. Messianic Jews have not stopped being Jewish to become “Gentile Christians.” On the contrary, our personal relationship with Messiah Yeshua makes us even more truly Jewish in our identity and life-style.

75. What Is Messianic Judaism?
WHAT IS messianic judaism? messianic judaism is an attempt to understand the Bible (both Old and New Testaments), from its Hebraic setting, and to walk in it.

WHAT IS MESSIANIC JUDAISM?
by Avram Yehoshua
A man once told me, 'The only thing Greek about the New Testament are the words.' I didn't fully understand it when he told it to me. Over the years though, I have come to see the meaning of what he said. Even though the words are in Greek, the reality that the words seek to convey is Hebraic.
The Creator God did not come to the Greeks or to the Romans or to the Chinese. He chose the Seed of Abraham to not only save from Egyptian slavery, something no other people can lay claim to, but He chose to wrap Himself around them. Consequently, the Reality of the God of the Universe is interwoven into His People Israel. Their words, unlike any other culture, center around the Living God and His understanding of Reality. All the other cultures had words for God, and salvation, and sin, etc., but only one, the Hebrews, knew the One True God. It was in their interaction with Him that their language, culture and reality as a people grew and developed. Their whole language structure reflects that experiential relationship that God had/has with Israel. It is recorded in both the Old and New Covenants. It is an ongoing Reality. To understand the Covenants, one has to understand that it is a Hebraic Reality it seeks to present..
You've heard it said that things translated from one language to another, lose something in the meaning. This is true for two reasons. One, the other language may not have the exact meanings for the actual words being used. And the other, which is the greater reason, is that what is reality for one people, may not be for another. An example of this is to relate baseball, an American reality, to a Spanish or French person. They might not understand what it is, not because Spanish or French doesn't have a word for 'ball' or a piece of wood that we call a 'bat' but that in Spain and France, baseball is not a sport. The Frenchman doesn't have a conceptual tree to hang it on.
