The Rise of "Messianic Judaism"
by Peter Hocken The rise of Messianic Judaism in the late 1960's and early 1970's represents as much a new direction and a discontinuity with the "Hebrew Christian" movement as it represents a continuity. The change of title, expressed in the re-naming of the Hebrew Christian Alliance of America as the Messianic Jewish Alliance of America What happened to win over the Jewish believers in Jesus to the Messianic Jewish vision they had earlier been so loath to embrace? The following factors all seem to have played a definite role: (1) the impact of the Six-Day War of 1967; (2) the charismatic movement; (3) the Jesus movement and the student upheavals of 1968. the Israeli victory in the Six-Day War gave a new self-confidence to some Hebrew Christians with a sense of the importance of biblical prophecies concerning Israel. The Jesus movement that was outside the denominations saw many young Jews come to faith in Jesus, and this produced a notable influx of new young believers into the Young Hebrew Christian Alliance. Many future leaders in the Messianic Jewish movement came from this crop of new young believers. Developments within the Messianic Jewish movement in the USA As mentioned, the change from Hebrew Christian terminology to that of Messianic Judaism arose from an influx of mostly young new Jewish believers in Jesus and an impulse to form Messianic synagogues. Much of this new thrust was charismatic. The tensions inherent in the movement, especially concerning the degree of Jewish practice to embody, were augmented by the Evangelical-Charismatic tussle.

Membership Israel Members Only Sign In Miscellaneous Blog Image Awards True Jewish Heroes News News News Archive The Quiet Holocaust The Perfidious Plot to Convert Jews By Meira Bat Avraham It's not easy being a Jew. Ours is a faith of personal accountability, of strict rules for daily life, of social obligations and community covenant. Our hardfast commitment to our people, our laws, our G-d, have spawned in an intolerant world hatred, an ever-growing resolution to force us to change, and now, renewed commitment to dwindle our ranks. The more blatant results of anti-Semitism, are, of course, well known to us. We will never forget the Inquisition, the pogroms of eastern Europe, the Holocaust. We are reminded regularly of the ongoing rejection of our people each time we receive hate literature, see news from Israel, eye skinheads on the street, hear Louis Farrakhan's vile speeches. However, perhaps the most insidious, dangerous, and hateful anti-Semitism is more subtle, less easy to spot, less provoking of criticism. This type of anti-Semitism is societally condoned. It can be characterized as "affectionate, compassionate anti-Semitism". I am speaking of the evangelical Christians, particularly the Baptists, who are attempting to LOVE US TO DEATH.

I asked a former member of such a group to explain to me what these terms meant. His reply- they are synonyms! We are talking about Jews who have converted to Christianity. However they will tell you that they are still Jewish and that it is possible for a Jew to be both Jewish and a believer in Jesus/Yeshua. The groups listed are for the most part Christian supported and staffed. They usually have as their leaders ordained ministers. Their common goal is to bring the Jewish people to accept Jesus as the promised Jewish Messiah and the savior of the world. That he died for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day. All who believe in him, Jew or Gentile will be saved. The Jewish community has categorized Tequniques that they use to accomplish the mission of bringing Jews to accept Jesus/Yeshua, as being deceptive and offensive.

The History of Messianic Judaism
What are Messianic Jews? Remember the first church was entirely Jewish and did not have a special label. They were just Jews who believed Yeshua from Nazareth was the Messiah and updated their Jewish worship in the light of Messiah having come. As the church became more gentile, there were difficulties which turned away more Jews ( see The Wild Olive ) The destruction of Jerusalem and the dispersion led to the development of rabbinic Judaism, which moved away from scriptural faith based around Temple worship and atonement, and opened up the division between the believers in Yeshua and non believers. Rabbinic Judaism was developed by the Pharisees, those with whom Yeshua had his strongest confrontations. (see Church History Through church history there have been a small number of Jews who have believed in Yeshua , but regrettably, it appears they mostly had to become gentile Christians and sever their connections with their Jewish heritage. In the mid nineteenth century in Kishineff the capital of Bessarabia, during a time of intense persecution by Russia, Joseph Rabbinovitch, a Jewish lawyer and teacher discovered Yeshua as Messiah. He went to the Holy Land, convinced that salvation for the Jews would only come through a return. On his arrival he began reading a New Testament, which he had been assured would give a reliable description of historic locations. As he read, he became convince that Jesus was/is the Messiah. He went home convinced of the need to share his newly fulfilled faith in its thoroughly Jewish context. All of this was accomplished between Rabinovitch and the Holy Spirit, and not by preaching from a Christian. The truth was available to a man who was open to receive it. This movement was the first to use the term "Messianic Jew"

From the beginning When Elohim created man and woman and put them in a garden, He placed only one prohibition on them. He said, "You shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil or you will surely die". The serpent talked them into disobeying, promising that they would be like God. (Genesis 3 v5) They ate and their innocent relationship with Elohim died. This is sometimes referred to as "the Fall", or the first sin ( sin meaning falling short of the required standard). God threw them out of the garden into the world of death, decay and sadness we see today. However

Messianic Judaism is a modern movement with an ancient past. All the first followers of Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah were Messianic Jews. In recent years, more and more Jewish people are believing that the Messiah has come. At the same time, more and more Christians are exploring the Jewish roots of their faith. Lederer/Messianic Jewish Communications has a two-pronged purpose reaching Jewish people with the message of the Messiah, and teaching Christians about the Jewish background to the New Testament. We accomplish these goals through:

    http://www.baruchhashemsynagogue.org/menus/menusmj.html
    What is Messianic Judaism?
The rebirth of modern Israel has been paralleled by a revival of interest in spirituality among Jewry worldwide. Amidst this search for meaning and truth, Jewish people have once again examined the Hebrew Scriptures, the most ancient and central document in Jewish faith. Many have compared the teachings of the Torah and the Prophets with the claims of the New Testament. A great number of these people have come to embrace the belief that Jesus is the Messiah of Israel and that the New Testament is, after all, a Jewish book ... about a Jewish Messiah. While Messianic Judaism is new in some respects, it is also ancient. It stands on a foundation going back to biblical times. In the first century CE, there were several different sects within Judaism Pharisees, Saduccees and Herodians to name a few. These different Jewish groups were unquestionably part of the larger Jewish community. A great number of Judeans comprised one of these groups the Nazarenes. These were followers of the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, and the forerunners of today's Messianic Judaism. The rise of the current Messianic Jewish movement began simultaneously with the rise of the Zionist movement in the early 1900s. Study groups and fellowships began to sprout throughout the United States and in different parts of the world. The explosive growth that solidified the Messianic movement, however, took place in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Today there are over 200 Messianic Synagogues in the United States and approximately 50 in Israel. The movement's rapid growth continues, with new congregations being started in the former Soviet Union, Latin America, and in key cities around the world.

    Messianic Judaism versus Rabbinic Judaism
    by Carol Calise
There are several foundational issues that define the difference between Messianic Judaism and Rabbinic Judaism. These issues have nothing to do with the structures of our services or our observance of holidays, Jewish customs, etc. But it is these foundational differences that affect each of our understanding and acceptance or non-acceptance of Yeshua as Messiah. 1. Rabbinic Judaism believes Oral law/tradition is authority. Scriptures of the Oral Torah , states “the Oral Torah, Torah she-be-al peh, Torah that is memorized is that half of the one whole Torah revealed by God to Moses at Mt. Sinai that came down from then to late antiquity, formulated and transmitted in memory alone. The Oral Torah serves to complement and complete the written one and vice versa.” (1-2) So, how does this work. God gave Moses a command, i.e., Honor your Father and Mother, then God explained in detail what that meant. This explanation was memorized by Moses and transmitted to Joshua who transmitted it to the elders, etc. The next piece of Rabbinic literature is called the Tosefta. It means addition or supplement. It is a supplement to the Mishnah and follows its same general order. It was compiled sometime between 200 CE - 400 CE.

It is impossible to understand what Messianic Judaism is without knowing a bit of history...
    Scriptural Judaism
Older than and much different from modern Rabbinical Judaism is what this essay will label Scriptural Judaism: how the Torah told the Israelites to be Jewish. It is not a modern division of Judaism. It cannot be practiced today because it relies on animal sacrifices, and Leviticus 17:8-9 has prohibited these since the Second Temple was destroyed in the year 70 C.E.. So there are no Scriptural Jewish congregations, as there are Rabbinically Jewish congregations and Messianic Jewish congregations. The Judaism of Yeshua's day was Scriptural Judaism. It was augmented by much rabbinical teaching, but its focus was the Temple and its rituals and sacrifices.
    Judaism Divides
In the year 70 C.E. the Second Temple was destroyed. It was no longer possible to practice Scriptural Judaism. Without the Temple sacrifices to atone for their sins, what would the Jewish people do? At that time there were many sects of Judaism: Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, Zealots, Nazarenes. All of these were different ways of augmenting Scriptural Judaism with other teachings. Only two of these sects survived: the Pharisees and the Nazarenes.

Perhaps the best known of the Messianic groups, although certainly not the largest, is the controversial Jews for Jesus organization, founded by Moishe Rosen in 1970. Its stated aims are to educate Evangelicals concerning the Jewish origins of their Christian faith, and to convert Jews to a belief in Yeshua , as the Messiah promised in the Jewish scriptures. Most Messianic Jews are ethnically Jewish, but are not considered part of the Jewish community by any recognized Jewish organization. The use of the term "Messianic" is not new. Romans 11:11 "Again I ask, Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious." A new thing on the Earth In many evangelical circles, there is discussion of a fairly recent, but rapidly growing phenomenon: Messianic Judaism. There are very popular national television shows about it, and no less a publication than Christianity Today magazine has recently done a major article about it. Students at Christian colleges and universities are asking about it. And churches are divided, in the words of the CT writer, "taking turns supporting and condemning" this new happening. What is it? What is Messianic Judaism? That’s a pretty easy question to answer, in general. Messianic Jews are those Jews who believe that the Messiah promised in the Bible has already come (they are waiting for him to come again ), and that He is the one who Christians call Jesus. They maintain their Jewish lifestyle and identity, but believe they are redeemed through God’s grace, by faith in the Messiah, Jesus (who they know as Yeshua, his Hebrew name). There are hundreds of Messianic Jewish congregations, with a growing representation on virtually every continent.
