Messianic Judaism
What Is It?

Hudson Taylor was the first successful missionary from Europe to bring the Gospel to the people of China. Why did he succeed where others failed? Because he realized that it wasn’t necessary to force European culture upon the Chinese as a part of the Gospel. He even adapted Chinese culture into his own lifestyle. Despite his success, he was despised by many other missionaries for “compromising” the Gospel - for not making Western culture part and parcel of the “Gospel.”
There is much “alien” culture that surrounds Gentile Christianity, which makes it unpalatable to most Jewish people. Jews will nearly always reject the Gentile Jesus as being the Messiah, but will much more readily accept the Jewish Yeshua as being their Messiah.
In Messianic Judaism we see the greatest fulfillment of the breaking down of the Middle wall of partition. The congregations of the Messianic Movement worldwide will typically approach half Jewish and half Gentile membership (some have a greater percentage of Gentile, some a greater percentage of Jewish membership). This “oneness” is the testimony that Yeshua is who He said He was. (John 17:21)
In the first century, every believer could speak of Messiah Yeshua to the Jewish people. It was much harder to bring this Gospel to the Gentile. The reason is simple

writetop("What Is Messianic Judaism?") Overview Messianic Judaism is a Biblically-based movement of people who, as committed Jews, believe in Yeshua (Jesus) as the Jewish Messiah of Israel of whom the Jewish Law and Prophets spoke. To many this seems a glaring contradiction. Christians are Christians, Jews are decidedly not Christian. So goes the understanding that has prevailed through nearly two thousand years of history. Messianic Jews call this a mistaken - and even anti-Scriptural - understanding. Historical and Biblical evidence demonstrates that following Yeshua was initially an entirely Jewish concept. Decades upon decades of persecution, division, and confused theology all contributed to the dichotomy between Jews and believers in Yeshua that many take for granted today. The First Century Two thousand years ago Yeshua was a Jew living among Jewish people. "Yeshua," by which Jesus was called during his time on earth, is itself a Hebrew word for "Salvation." Yeshua kept Torah, or the Law of Moses. He studied the Jewish Scriptures that many now know as the "Old Testament," and read them aloud at the local synagogue on Shabbat (Luke 4:16). He was called rabbi ("master") by his followers. "Think not that I came to abolish the law and the prophets: I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them." - Yeshua, Matthew 5:17

Overview:
Messianic Judaism is a religious movement, composed of faith groups that are mainly attended by ethnic/cultural Jews. They differ from Reform, Conservative, Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox Jews over their beliefs about the Messiah. Most Jews believe that the Messiah has yet to come; Messianic Jews believe that Yeshua of Nazareth was the expected Messiah. (Yeshua is called Jesus Christ by Christians.)

INTRODUCTION
Their are many examples of how Messianic Judaism in General is as far off to the right from the truth as Christianity is off to the left. Messianic Judaism although Messianic in theory is nothing more than Messianic Rabbinical Judaism. Messianic Judaism still clinches onto the very doctrines of the Talmud that the Messiah set us free from. On numerous occasions, I have personally witnessed and experienced many of their man-made traditions and in some cases the legalism (law on the law) that is pushed while ignoring the Scripture altogether.
KIPPAHS AND TALLITS... One of the experiences that comes up first in my mind is the pushing of head coverings for men. Although subtle it was clear where they stood on this issue. Many times I was asked if I would like to wear a Kippah or if I had a Kippah or asked if I forgot my Kippah. I was never asked if I would like to wear a Tallit or if I had a Tallit or if I forgot my Tallit. It was clear that they were strongly encouraging (pushing) wearing the Kippah but not the Tallit.

Beliefs of Messianic Judaism
Most believers would probably accept the definition of a Messianic Jew as " a person who was born Jewish or converted to Judaism, who is a 'genuine believer' in Yeshua [Jesus], and who acknowledges his Jewishness ." " A tenet of Messianic Judaism asserts that when a Jew accepts a Jewish Messiah, born in a Jewish land, who was foretold by Jewish prophets in the Jewish Scriptures, such a Jew does not become a Gentile. In fact, he becomes a completed Jew a Jew who believes Jesus is the Messiah. " Those of the "Evangelic" wing of Messianic Judaism hold theological beliefs which are essentially identical to those of Evangelical Christianity, including: G-d as a Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the virgin birth sinless life resurrection ; ascension and future second coming salvation inerrancy of the Bible, etc. They believe that their religious practices and beliefs are very similar to that experienced by a 1 st century CE Jewish Christian movement (also known as The Way or the Nazarenes ). This was one of about two dozen religious movements which were active at the time, including the Pharisees, Sadducees, Zealots, followers of John the Baptist, Essenes, Gnostics, Herodians, Pauline Christians, etc. The Jewish Christians was composed of Jewish reformers; their group was founded by Jesus' disciples, lead by James the brother of Jesus, and largely concentrated in Jerusalem. Historians and theologians differ in their

BASICS OF MESSIANIC JUDAISM
  • YESHUA IS MESSIAH AND L-RD
Messianic Judaism started with Yeshua (Jesus of Nazareth) as His Jewish followers accepted the evidence that He was the promised Messiah (Anointed One) of Israel, and as the scriptures foretold, He also was the God of Israel in the flesh, YHVH, the L-RD, who died for sins according to Isaiah 53, then rose again according to the Psalms and the Prophets. The believers in Yeshua were called Notzrim (Nazarenes), which Christians are called in modern Hebrew today. However, there is that faction today who call themselves Notzrim and say they believe in Yeshua, but they do not accept Him as appearing as God Himself in the flesh. Most of Messianic Judaism does not accept them as true believers because of their denial.
BIBLICAL MESSIANIC JUDAISM IS VALID CONTEMPORARY JUDAISM
Since the first Jewish followers of Yeshua never left the faith of the God of Israel, YHVH, but rather came into a more personal covenant with Him through trust in Messiah Yeshua, their faith was and is the only complete Biblical Judaism and thus a superior Judaism. This is because Messiah Yeshua is the promised deliverer from sin and completed the understanding of the Torah (His ancient Word) that was lacking. However, this does not mean that modern Rabbinical Judaism does not have truth within it.

I asked a former member of such a group to explain to me what these terms meant. His reply- they are synonyms! We are talking about Jews who have converted to Christianity. However they will tell you that they are still Jewish and that it is possible for a Jew to be both Jewish and a believer in Jesus/Yeshua. The groups listed are for the most part Christian supported and staffed. They usually have as their leaders ordained ministers. Their common goal is to bring the Jewish people to accept Jesus as the promised Jewish Messiah and the savior of the world. That he died for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day. All who believe in him, Jew or Gentile will be saved. The Jewish community has categorized Tequniques that they use to accomplish the mission of bringing Jews to accept Jesus/Yeshua, as being deceptive and offensive.

    Reader: Dear Rabbi,
Hello. My name is xxxx. I am 16 years old and have been born and raised "Jewish." I put that in quotes because even though I was told that I am Jewish I only went to Hebrew School for a year and was never able to learn much about my religion but was always proud to be able to be a part of such an amazing heritage.
I may not be extremely educated in Judaism but I am a strong believer in God. Recently my mother was lead in a different direction and found Jesus and had accepted him into her life. She still considers herself to be Jewish and has titled herself to be a Messianic Jew. It's been extremely hard or me to adjust to the drastic change. Within the last year and a half there were many changes that I was forced to accommodate to. I have tried very hard to understand her beliefs and where she is coming from, but there are many things about her beliefs that just do not make sense to me.
She says that she is still Jewish yet, from what I understand about the religion, she is going against many things that Jewish people have been fighting for, for so many years. I was hoping that you could please help me better understand certain aspects of messianic beliefs and answer some questions that have been running through my head.

    What is Messianic Judaism?
Messianic Jews?....It’s a term that is being heard more and more these days. Succinctly defined, we are Jews who believe that Yeshua (the Hebrew name for Jesus) of Nazareth is the promised Messiah of the Jewish Scriptures. Because we believe Yeshua is the Jewish Messiah, we also believe in maintaining a Jewish lifestyle of faith. Hence, we celebrate all of the biblical holidays (i.e. Passover, Succot, etc.) as well as many of the customs which are consistent with the Scriptures. For much of history it has been assumed that Jewishness and Yeshua are mutually exclusive. Of course, it’s fine for any non-Jew to believe in Him-but a Jew? However, when one stops to study the actual history of this movement, it becomes clear that this assumption was not always the case. After all, this Messianic movement did not originate in Rome or Athens, but started in the land of Israel in the midst of the Jewish people. Most scholars agree that its leader lived a lifestyle consistent with first century Judaism. He worshipped on the "Shabbat" (Luke 4:16 ff.), celebrated all the Jewish holidays such as "Passover" and "Chanukah" (Matthew 26:17 ff.; John 10:22 ff.) and even wore the traditional; "tzitzit" (Matthew 9:20). Likewise, His Name "Yeshua" testifies to His Jewish identity, since it is Hebrew for "Salvation."

    Messianic Judaism
Is it Jewish to believe in Jesus (Yeshua, his Hebrew name)? One answer to this and other complex questions is simply that all those who have accepted Yeshua as the Messiah, and have accepted G-d's provision of atonement through him, remain Jewish. There is no conflict here.
History has come to know him as Jesus of Nazareth, but his friends and close associates just called him Yeshua. He brought a message of life, a message of hope and joy. He injected peace and purpose, meaning and significance into life after life. He has transformed us also.
Some may ask, "Doesn't Yeshua deny or oppose Judaism?" Not according to his own statements, or according to the lives of his earliest followers, the apostles. They joyfully celebrated the holidays together and followed the Jewish traditions. They came to realize the fullness that Yeshua said he would pack into their rich traditions. Levi further reminds us that Yeshua did not come to abolish the law, but rather to fulfill it. "But isn't this exclusively for Jewish people?," some Gentiles may ask. Absolutely not! All who respond to the Messiah, Jew and Gentile alike, are heirs to a rich Jewish heritage and have deep Jewish roots. Together, they share the dynamic vibrant life that he gives.
Yeshua was a Jew living in a Jewish land among Jewish people. All the apostles were Jewish as were the writers of the Newer Testament. For many years, faith in Yeshua was strictly a Jewish one. The book of Acts and other historical data tell us that during the first century there were hundreds of thousands of Messianic Jews. Moreover, there were Messianic Synagogues scattered throughout the Roman Empire and beyond. During this time, G-d miraculously showed his people that the Messiah was for both the Jew and the Gentile alike. Today, we are seeking to put the Messiah back into his biblical and Jewish context, and to share its beauty with others.

    What Is Messianic Judaism?
by Chaia Kravitz The question asked most often about Messianic Judaism is, "What exactly *is* Messianic Judaism?" Messianic Judaism commonly refers to Jewish people who have accepted Yeshua as their Savior. It is a movement that is thousands of years old, but has been gaining more prominence and momentum within the last century. The first followers of Yeshua were Jewish. In that sense, Messianic Judaism is the oldest and original "Christian" denomination. However, when the Gentile church was established, Messianic Jews were given the choices of either returning to the mainstream Jewish synagogues, where they would have to forfeit their faith in Yeshua, or join the Gentile church, where they were expected to drop their Jewish lifestyles and assimilate. Unfortunately, the majority chose the latter, so many of the early Messianic Jews disappeared into the Church. In the 1800's, a revival occurred and Messianic Judaism as we know it today was re-born as many Jews came to faith in Yeshua while wishing to maintain their Jewish roots.

A History of the 20th Century Movement in America of "Jewish Believers" in "Yeshua Ha Mashiach" (Jesus Christ)
    by William Greene, Ph.D.
The modern phenomenon of Jewish believers in Jesus Christ as their Messiah has a long history in the United States, and (as is the case with most modern Jewish history) has strong ties to a European heritage as well. Foundations for the twentieth century were laid, of course, in the nineteenth century and before; worldwide, estimates of Jewish conversions to Christianity approximated 250,000 during the 1800s, including such notables as British Prime Minister Disraeli, Old Testament commentary wri ters Franz Delitzsch and David Baron, and the first Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem, Michael Solomon Alexander. However, in America, this phenomenon has taken on some unique characteristics, the most prominent of which has been the evolution of what was known as " Hebrew Christianity "
