War Legacy In an attempt to stop North Vietnamese assistance to the Lao, and to prevent a communist group from coming to power in Laos, United States planes rained more than 500,000 loads of bombs on Laos from 1964 to 1973. Some 300,000 tons of bombs fell on Xieng Khouang Province, an average of two tons for each inhabitant.
