Competing Against Microsoft, the FOSS Way
I found this two excerpts (on Groklaw ) about competing against Microsoft in making software, the proprietary way versus the FOSS way to be right on the mark. Yes, the way to win over Microsoft hulk is to go FOSS. ;-) Making deals with MS [the proprietary way]
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, May 14 2004 @ 05:10 PM EDT Back when I did a fair amount of FoxPro programming I had the fortune to know a
couple of the key developers in that language at the time. Anyhow, it was
pretty common knowledge that you pretty much had only three real options for
making money writing software. 2) Hope you are lucky enough to simply sell all your hard work to MS. 3) Make something that the public REALLY wants badly and get a big market share
before MS can react. (Awfully hard to do this one!) The other, not so favorable options were:

Following the example of academies in some Arab countries, Europe and North America,
The Islamic Fiqh Academy in Delhi has been reforming the teaching and understanding of Fiqh.
    By Yoginder Sikand
Madrasas were originally intended as institutions for the preservation and transmission of the Islamic religious tradition as a whole. In contemporary India, they focus largely although not exclusively, on the teaching of fiqh or Islamic jurisprudence. Most Indian Muslims adhere to the Hanafi school of jurisprudence and so most madrasas in the country teach only the books of Hanafi fiqh. Almost all these books were written between the ninth and the fourteenth centuries, in a context very different from that of India today. Most of their authors lived and worked in Central Asia, Iran and parts of the Arab world. Consequently, their under-standing of fiqh was naturally shaped by the particular environment in which they lived. The questions that they raised and the answers that they provided were a product of the concerns of their own times. Not surprisingly, their books do not deal with many issues of contemporary concern and relevance. Despite this, most Indian madrasas continue to employ these texts in the teaching of fiqh. Because of this, madrasa students are often left unaware of and unable to respond to questions that the modern world forces us to contend with. Consequently, the teaching of fiqh has been gradually distanced from real-world concerns.

    Recipe for our ills
    Recipe for our ills
The 1.3 billion Muslims are looking towards the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) to reclaim the Muslim honour. They have been constantly under attack by the enemy without any distinction or discrimination. It is principally because Muslim have been divided into thousands of sects, mazhabs, each one claiming to be the purest. But the enemy had been targetting the Muslims thinking them to be one. And some of us act as proxies of the enemy in joining the attack on our own brethren. The Quran began with the word 'Iqra' but the latter theologians interpreted this so narrowly that it got confined to merely studying theology while the fact is that early Muslims retrieved the Greek scholarly heritage inspired by the same word. They established universities in Granada and Cordova in Spain and lit the lamp of enlightenment in Europe immersed in darkness. Fall of Andalusia was followed by the rise of the Ottoman empire which however could not retain the scholarly traditions and Muslims began to split on minor issues. The Ottomans were then replaced by the British and French colonies. We began to regress, falter and wither.

ARTICLES WHO ARE THESE DEOBANDI/WAHABI PEOPLE AND WHAT IS THE TABLIGHI JAMAAT? The biggest threat to Islam from within these days is from the Wahabi, Deobandi, Tablighi, Salafi sects. This threat to an average Muslim is not obvious at all. These days they want to call themselves Sunnis to deceive gullible Muslims. It is worth mentioning to some of the misguided youngsters of the above renegade groups that the four Mazhabs, namely, the Shafi'i, the Hanafi, Maliki and Hambali, all follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and believe in Sunni Aqaa'id, and are not one of the 72 firqas (groups) destined for Hell.
The physical appearance of these renegades may deceive one as they decorate their deceitful faces with the Sunnat of the beard and perform compulsory acts such as Namaaz, in a most convincing manner. However, their corrupt beliefs prove that they have no true love for the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and they are the greatest insulters of the Holy Prophet and thrown out of Islam.
Who are these Deobandi/Wahabi people? This is the question raised by the Ulama of Masjid-e-Nabawi, Mufti Sheikh Umar bin Hamadan Al Maharassee, who gave a Fatwa of Kufr on Deobandi/Wahabi/Tabligh Jammaat leaders and founders nearly 100 years ago for insulting the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). This Fatwa was issued after years of study of Wahabi/Deobandi books and clarification sought from the writers of these books which were never received nor did they repent for their opinions. Some of their Aqeeda and opinions are printed in this bill.

The Islamic Responsibility Towards the Sick and
those tending to the Sick It is the opinion of some people that there is no need to find out what is permissible and what is prohibited when seeking medical treatment. It is as if the sick person is not answerable for any of his actions. Based on this, they also feel that the sick person's doctor also has full liberty to do whatever he pleases. This is incorrect. Such people should understand that a sick person does not go out of the boundaries of Allâh's power. Allâh Ta'âla has the right of possession over every person's life and wealth. It is in this light that Allâh Ta'âla has said: "If We were to ordain for them: 'Lay down your lives', or, 'forsake your homelands', only a very few of them would do it - although if they did what they are admonished to do, it would indeed be for their own good." ( Surah an-Nisâ' , verse 66) We learn from this that Allâh Ta'âla also has the right to order us to intentionally kill ourselves (i.e. commit suicide). It is only because of the kindness of Allâh Ta'âla, that despite being able to order us to do this, He did not ask us to bear such difficulties. At the same time, He did not leave us completely free. Instead, He laid down certain rules and regulations when seeking medical treatment. These rules and regulations are such that if we had to ponder over them with an open mind, we will find that there are certain concessions and leeways. They are not as restrictive as the laws of a government. As a form of appreciation for this kindness on the part of Allâh Ta'âla, man should be prepared to sacrifice his wealth and life in order to safeguard himself from sins. He should never ever seek illegal and prohibited forms of medical treatment. When a person is sick, he should never ever act contrary to the

Their belief is that tahajjud salât which is performed during the latter portion of the night was brought forward in Ramadân. Thus there is no addition in Ramadân. (The Ahle Hadith are a sect that do not ascribe to any mazhab nor do they follow any particular Imam. They claim to derive their rules directly from the hadith. Another name used for this sect is Ghair Muqallideen. The Salafis also hold similar beliefs. The term Ahle Hadith used in this book refers in general to all those who hold such beliefs) (It is interesting to not that Mia Nazir Husain Delhwi, the firts notable scholar of the Ahle Hadith sect remarked to Moulana Thanaullah Amritsari that the Ahle Hadith are small Shias due to the disrespect created by not adopting the taqlid of the Imaams.

Religious Symbolisms I was thinking about portions of the speech delivered by the French Ambassador that night at the talk . One thing that stuck in my mind was how France has made a concerted effort to stamp out religious symbols in schools. I grew up in a very different time - in a school in Damansara Utama, and two schools in Philadelphia . In those days in Malaysia, I remembered being very aware of who I was (a Muslim) and the vast differences between me and my friends. It didn't bother me, we were just different, in much the same way that we already look different. Did it affect our friendships - no, not really. If I didn't like a kid, I didn't like them not for the fact that they were of a different race or religion, rather they were probably not nice to me to begin with. When I moved to the States, being Muslim and Malay gave way to being Asian. There were very few Asians in our neighbourhood and hence, we stuck out like sore thumbs. Of course, I didn't have to wear a headscarf for people to pick on me. Being Asian, I generally got called names when the popular kids needed someone to harass. But slowly, as the months passed and I had teachers who encouraged show-and-tell, I got to tell my classmates about my country and my culture. True, I had no idea what I was saying at the time, but pointing out Malaysia on the atlas was enough to generate a sense of fascination among the other children - like 'Wow, she came from that far away?' Ignorance gave way to understanding - removing the barriers of fear. Eventually, we were able to discuss things openly, and as I

Post Editorial OIC's Secretary-General NASRINE R. KARIM The mainstream media and some heads of government were irked by Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad's speech at the OIC Summit and called it anti-Semitic. While in fact, Dr. Mahathir advocated moderation and caution. The truth may be unpalatable but it has to be said. I put forward some highlights from his speech in Kuala Lumpur during the 10th OIC Summit-judge for yourselves: "The whole world is looking at us. Certainly 1.3 billion Muslims, one-sixth of the world's population are placing their hopes in us, in this meeting ". Dr. Mahathir criticised the Muslim governments for being indecisive and for deepening rifts, which had weakened the Ummah. "To begin with, the governments of all the Muslim countries can close ranks and have a common stand if not on all issues, at least on some major ones, such as on Palestine. We are all Muslims. We are all oppressed. We are all being humiliated. But we who have been raised by Allah above our fellow Muslims to rule our countries have never really tried to act in concert in order to exhibit at our level the brotherhood and unity that Islam enjoins upon us." "But not only are our governments divided, the Muslim ummah is also divided, and divided again and again. Over the last 1,400 years the interpreters of Islam, the learned ones, the ulamas have interpreted and reinterpreted the single Islamic religion brought by Prophet Muhammad S.A.W, so differently that now we have a thousand religions which are often so much at odds with one another that we often fight and kill each other. Islam in Russia
Islam is the second religion in the number of adherents in Russia. The Muslim community has survived the Russian Empire and Soviet government and is now going through a renaissance. Like other religions, Islam has not remained unchanged since it emerged. In the course of their conquests, the Arabs encountered feudal relations that were more developed and prevailed in the empire they created, the Arab Caliphate. This was reflected in the Sunnah, a collection of hadiths (lit. "reports") on the sayings and deeds of Prophet Muhammad. Thus, another source of Muslim ideology emerged along with the Koran. The hadith collections universally recognized in the Muslim world are: "Al-Jami as-sahih" by al-Bukhari (d. in 870); "Al-Jami as-sahih" by Muslim an-Nishapuri (d. in 875); "Sunan" by ibn Majah (d. in 886); "Sunan" by Abu Dawud al-Sijistani (d. in 888); "Al-Jami al-kabir" by Muhammad at-Tirmidhi/Tirmizi (d. in 892); and "Sunan" by an-Nasai (d. in 915). For a long time, Derbent remained a base for protecting Muslim states from Khazar invasions and for raids of Muslim detachments on their non-Muslim neighbors. A fortification system was built northwest of it where Arab soldiers from Syria and Iraq were first settled. The same soldiers began to preach actively and spread Islam among the native population, but mountain communities adopted it slowly and with difficulties. Sufi Islam was more successfully introduced, since it absorbed elements of local cults and beliefs, but even so the conversion process took a few centuries. Derbent continued to serve as a key base for Muslim propaganda and together with the fortifications that surrounded it turned into a Sufi teaching center.
