Local Historic Designated Landmark
Old Hanover Lutheran Church
Cape Girardeau, Missouri Old Hanover Lutheran Church
This well preserved church was built in 1887. The adjoining school building was built in 1923. Both brick structures are good representative examples of Missouri vernacular institutional buildings. They exhibit the high quality of craftsmanship and conservative design traditions associated with Missouri German immigrants. The church served its congregation from 1887 to 1969. As early as 1838, Lutherans living north of Cape Girardeau, mostly immigrants from the Hanover region of Germany, gathered in private homes and in the carpentry shop of Daniel Bertling to worship. Needing a real church building, Bertling donated land for the first church edifice in 1846. The brick church was constructed in 1887 by William Regenhardt, a Cape Girardeau builder. The brick came from a brickyard at Broadway and Louisiana streets. Local stonemasons faced the foundation with large sandstone blocks from outcroppings on the William Koerber farm. The church was dedicated in September 1887. One hundred years after the church was dedicated, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

What do Lutherans believe? Central to every Lutheran's belief is that God loves and forgives us through Jesus Christ. We can't earn God's love and forgiveness. Love and forgiveness are free gifts from God which we enjoy, and for which we offer our gratitude.
The Bible is a valuable resource for understanding God's intention for us.

Dan Hooper is back in the pulpit, doing the work God called him to do after 16 years in exile.
    Rev Hooper Installed at Hollywood
Rev. Dr. Paul W. Egertson, Bishop Emeritus gave the sermon. Rev. Jeff Johnson, Chair of the Extraordinary Candidacy Project (ECP) led the installation. Rev. Hooper, 56, has been in committed relationship with his partner, Carl Hunter for nearly 28 years. While they solumnized their relationship with a church ceremony several years ago, they recently traveled to San Francisco and were married in the state of California. See article in the April 2004 issue of The Lutheran. http://www.thelutheran.org/0404/page10c.html
Who We Are... Founded in 1989, Lutheran Lesbian & Gay Ministries (LLGM) is a national mission society that supports openly identified sexual minority pastors, seminarians and lay ministers who have been discriminated against because of their sexual orientation. 150 years ago, the mission societies of Europe raised money to send pastors to serve the immigrant population on the American frontier, because the state churches of Europe refused to do so. Today, Lutheran Lesbian & Gay Ministries (LLGM) is doing the same for gay and lesbian pastors, because of the "refusal" policies of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). In the decade since our founding, LLGM’s donors have provided tens of thousands of dollars in support to individual pastors and to congregations who support their gay or lesbian pastors.
