85. Mormons And Danites: The Historical Background In Missouri
Discussion of the history of persecution and trouble for latterday saints ( Mormons ) in Missouri in the late 1830s.
http://www.jefflindsay.com/LDSFAQ/FQ_Missouri.shtml
What Was the 1838 Mormon War?
This page provides historical background on the persecution of Mormons in Missouri, leading to the 1838 Extermination Order. The setting in Missouri, the activities of mobs and militias, and the Mormon effort at self-defense are outlined, along with background on the development of the infamous Danites. This page offers supplementary information to my page on The 1838 Mormon War and Tales of the "Danites" . That page should be consulted first for quick answers to major questions on the Danites and the 1838 conflict in Missouri. This is one page in the suite of Frequently Asked Questions About Latter-day Saint Beliefs . It is the personal work of Jeff Lindsay and does not necessarily reflect official LDS doctrine.

Background: The Danites Bibliography
An Overview of the Danites and the Church in Missouri
The Danites
The term "Danites" is typically used to refer to a short-lived, secretive band of Mormons organized by Sampson Avard in 1838. The Danites apparently were organized in June of 1838 to defend the Mormons from internal enemies who had stirred up much prejudice and even violence against the Saints. In June, several dissidents from the Church were given a letter signed by Avard (the first signer) and 83 others urging them to leave immediately, which they did. Other dissidents stayed on but apparently became more quiet. With the threat of internal dissidents largely removed, the Danites evolved by the fall of 1838 into a defensive group to protect the Saints from the external threat of mobsters.

Latter-Day Saints Family
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith. He had been strongly influenced in his youth by revival-oriented evangelists and wanted to join a religious group professing the truth about God. His quest ended in frustration. He reportedly then experienced a series of visions, first of God the Father and Jesus, then John the Baptist, and then various angels. In 1827 he claimed to have received plates of gold upon which was engraved the Book of Mormon, written in a form of Egyptian. He also claimed to have received two stones called the "Urim and Thummim" used to translate the tablets. One source compared them to crystal balls. The Book of Mormon told the story of the Jeredistes, who came to America after the attempt to build the Tower of Babel, and the Israelites, who came after the destruction of Jerusalem in the sixth century BC. Both groups eventually disappeared, with American Indians as the remnant. The last of the prophets of the Israelite group wrote a history which was buried in what came to be New York. In 1830, the Book of Mormon was published and the Church organized. The Mormons quickly became outcasts.

The Anchorage Alaska Temple
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
The second of the new small temples, Anchorage incorporates several new features. For example, the Angel Moroni on the Monticello Temple is white, durring overcast days the statue seems to disappear because of its unobtrusive color. For the Anchorage Temple the Angel Moroni is gold as in all other temples. To give the temple an Alaskan feel the west wall includes several star stones set in the pattern of the Big Dipper. This constellation is important for two reasons. Since the Big Dipper points to the north star, and hence represents northern lands, it was used in the Alaskan state flag. Its pointing to the north star, which is the only fixed star in the sky, also symbolizes pointing the way to truth, and as such it is part of the symbolism on the exterior of the Salt Lake Temple. Also, stylized evergreen trees are seen on most of the doors, forget-me-nots, the Alaska State flower, decorate the Sealing Room, and the altars are decorated with Native American influenced designs. The temple was announced in October 1997.

The Restoration in Images This site contains on the order of 1500 photographs of historical sites of biblical interest in Israel, as well as sites in America which are of historical importance to members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. America ( The Kirtland Temple in Kirtland, Ohio) After the crucifixion of the Savior and the death of the apostles, the Gospel of Jesus Christ in it's entirety was lost from the earth. Gospel principles were debated and changed by men, and the Priesthood power held by ancient prophets and bestowed upon Peter, James and John by the Savior himself was lost. in 1830, the United States of America was the site of the restoration of the Gospel, the Lord's Priesthood power, and the establishment of His church as it existed in the meridian of time. Reverence to and Interest in these sites in Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri and elsewhere across the heartland of America as places where God has again communed with man are unique to members of his restored church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Israel ( The entrance to the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem) Three of the worlds great religions have deep roots in Israel : Judaism, Christianity and Muslimism. Photographs were captured of many important sites to these major religions. The Old Testament is held by tenants of the Savior's restored church as scripture, and an understanding of the culture and environment of the Old Testament Prophets lends deeper understanding to their teachings. As Christians, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints revere Jesus Christ as the Messiah and the New Testament as scripture. The historical and geographical context of His mission are of great interest and study.

http://www.media.utah.edu/UHE/c/CHURCHJESUSLATTER.html
THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is commonly known as the Mormon Church or the LDS Church. Members of the church were the first permanent non-Native American settlers in the Territory of Utah, and they still comprise approximately 70 percent of Utah's population.
Organization, Teachings, and Practices
Latter-day Saints believe that their church is the authentic restoration of the church established by Jesus Christ in New Testament times. Its authority to perform saving ordinances and do other things in God's name comes from the priesthood, which was restored to Joseph Smith through heavenly messengers and is passed on to all worthy male members through ordination. At the head of the church stands the president of the church, who is considered God's living prophet. He and his two counselors constitute a quorum known as the First Presidency. Next to them stand the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and they are assisted in administering the Church worldwide by two Quorums of the Seventy. A Presiding Bishopric, consisting of three men, administers the temporal affairs of the Church.
All these leaders are known collectively as the General Authorities of the church. Other general church officers include the presidency of the Relief Society (a women's organization founded by Joseph Smith), the presidency of the young women's association, the presidency of the young men's association, the presidency of the Sunday School, and the presidency of the Primary (a churchwide organization for children).

We hope the information presented on our web site will demonstrate the many misrepresentations which have been told about the history and doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ. This Church is Christ's. We invite you to listen to the true message of the Church. The Latter-day Saints have been so repeatedly and generally misrepresented and maligned, that ordinarily little has been done by way of refutation. Were the people to undertake to meet every lie uttered against them and set it right, they would devote the whole of their lives to it and then die without accomplishing the desired object. But there are times when a refutation is necessary; when the whole people awake in earnestness to deny the misrepresentations of those who purposely and wilfully assail them.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
General Information Mormonism is a way of life practiced by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often called Mormons or Latter-day Saints. Although two-thirds of the church's membership is in the United States, especially the western states, members are also located in 100 other countries and 25 territories, colonies, or possessions. In 1989, the church reported a worldwide membership of about 7 million.
History
Joseph Smith founded the church in Fayette, NY, in 1830. Earlier he reported having visions of God and other heavenly beings in which he was told that he would be the instrument to establish the restored Christian church. According to Smith, one of the heavenly messengers directed him to some thin metal plates, gold in appearance and inscribed in a hieroglyphic language. Smith's translation of the plates, the Book of Mormon, describes the history, wars, and religious beliefs of a group of people (c. 600 BC - AD 421) who migrated from Jerusalem to America. Smith attracted a small group of followers who settled in Kirtland, Ohio, and Jackson County, Mo. Because of persecution the church moved to northern Missouri and then to Nauvoo, Ill. In 1837 missionaries were sent to England and later to Scandinavia; most of their converts emigrated to the United States.

The word Mormonism was first used in the 1830s as a derogatory name for followers of Joseph Smith, Jr. who accepted The Book of Mormon as a sacred text, but the term soon lost its derogatory connotation. Most Mormons today generally consider the word as inoffensive, though most prefer the term Latter Day Saint. 98. The Mormon Connection
Article by Jan McClintock explaining the doctrinal connections to genealogy in the Church of Jesus Christ of latterday saints.

The Mormon Connection
The LDS Church and Genealogy
by Jan McClintock
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints maintains the largest genealogical data collection in the world, at the main Family History Library in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. The library collects information from members and other submitters through the Genealogical Society of Utah, the corporate business end of the Family History Department of the church.
The reason that the LDS church is so interested in genealogy is explained in church doctrine: family love and life can continue forever, even after death. To help make this happen, members want to be able to perform the temple ordinances, namely baptisms, endowments, and sealings to spouses and to parents, and also confirmations and ordinations. Endowments are like promises to the Lord to obey the covenants that are set by Him for life on Earth. Sealings are a binding together of families; husband and wife, and children to parents, in order to spend eternity together.
The church believes that these ordinances should be performed on behalf of ancestors who did not have the opportunity themselves. Ancestors are not forced to take the ordinances; they must accept the opportunity to do so.
