This set of documents is my attempt to provide answers to the questions that I receive about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and about The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Christ . These answers represent Jeff Lindsay's views and interpretations of scripture, history, and religious thought. My comments and answers have not been approved by the Church or its leaders and could be utterly incorrect. Latter-day Saint doctrine is not defined by my writings or by the writings of any private individual. It is not defined by stray, alleged quotes of past leaders. Even the "official" LDS Web Site is not necessarily a definitive, canonized source of doctrine (but it does have great graphics). Official LDS doctrine, that which members are expected to accept, is defined by the scriptures (the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and a few other items in the LDS canon) and by official, ratified pronouncements of the First Presidency of the Church. If my views disagree with those standards, I am clearly wrong.

    The Bible and LDS Scriptures
Latter-day Saints accept and revere the Bible as the word of God. We use both the Old Testament and the New Testament, and find tremendous value in both, for both testify of Christ, the Messiah, and teach us precious truths about God. Latter-day Saints learn Bible stories and scriptures from their childhood and throughout their lives. The Bible is used and studied in our Sunday School classes, our youth classes, our daily seminary program, college classes sponsored by the Church (Institute) and on Church campuses such as BYU. A passage from the Bible, James 1:5, was the catalyst that moved Joseph Smith to inquire of God which church he should join, leading to his remarkable First Vision that initiated the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Joseph Smith and all subsequent prophets have used the Bible heavily in their teachings. Joseph quoted from it more than any other scripture in his sermons and writings, and said the reader of the Bible could "see God's own handwriting in the sacred volume, and he who reads it oftenest will like it best" (

Overview:
Mormon faith groups believe in Restorationism : the concept that: The true Christian church died out early in the 2 nd Century CE , when religious leaders abandoned many of the teachings of Jesus Christ, Paul and the other apostles. It was restored by Joseph Smith in the early 19 th century, when he founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Smith's original denomination fragmented into many faith groups, mainly because of: Conflicts during the 1840s, triggered by the assassination of Joseph Smith, and Additional conflicts during the 1890s over polygyny. The Mormon wing of Christianity now consists of almost a hundred denominations: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (a.k.a. The Church of Jesus Christ, and the LDS) is by far the largest Mormon denomination. The more liberal Community of Christ (formerly called the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ) is second in size. Although religious historians and the public generally refer to them as " Mormons ," they do not use the term themselves, because of its association with polygyny, and because they believe the name was not part of the original church.

    Joseph Smith's early experiences:
The Mormons have had a fascinating and turbulent history. Its founder was Joseph Smith (1805-1844), a resident of Palmyra NY. His family of origin were called " Seekers " - Christians who were not affiliated with a church, but which respected the teachings of all denominations. In his teens, his mother and most of the rest of the family converted to Presbyterianism. However, Joseph was deeply troubled by the multiplicity of Christian sects which existed in his time. In common with many Christians before and since, he wondered which was the "true" Christian religion . He received his first vision in 1820, at the age of 14 in Palymra, NY. God and Jesus Christ appeared before Joseph as separate entities and told him that all of the Christian sects and denominations were in error and that he should not join any of them. However, he should anticipate a major personal assignment in the future. In 1823, at the age of 17, he received three visitations from Moroni (some texts say Nephi) at the time of the

PAST HISTORY OF POLYGYNY IN THE MORMON CHURCH Click Here to Visit our Sponsors.
    Terminology:
Three often confused words are: Polyandry: The practice in which a woman is married to more than one man at the same time. Polygyny: The practice in which a man is married to more than one woman at the same time. Polygamy: An umbrella term encompassing both polyandry and polygyny. The media generally refer to plural marriages among Mormons as "polygamy." However, the practice has always been limited to polygyny. Polyandry has never been allowed. Thus, polygyny is the more precise term to use here.
Origins of Mormon polygyny (a.k.a. plural marriage):
Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , (a.k.a. the LDS or Mormon church) first promoted the concept of polygyny during the 1830s. This type of marital structure involves one man married to multiple wives. The practice has been variously called the Law of Abraham , the Patriarchal Order of Marriage Celestial Plural Marriage, or the Law of the Priesthood.

This list is certainly not comprehensive, but it does list all Hugo-, Nebula-, and Locus-winning novels with Latter-day Saint characters or references. Many works include more than one reference, and in some, Latter-day Saints are a central element. (Titles in bold are those with the most extensive Latter-day Saint references.)
