Over Galilee - The land of Damascus - a phenomenon will be first seen only by the Exiles as the Passover approaches:-
The [priest]messiah [47:3 = SON OF THE CLOUD pun Amos 9:11 - 'that is fallen'] will be hidden for twelve months in the light of his abode, the 'Bird's Nest'.
Then the light will appear between heaven and earth over the land of Galilee.
The people will see a great light. A light will shine over them.
This Messianic light is a physical phenomenon enveloping the Messiah and actually shining over Galilean territory, the Land of Damascus [Qumran]
There he will manifest himself from the light of the 'Bird's Nest' Zohar messiology [8b Zohar on Exodus]
The heavenly Temple will descend. Above it will be a pillar [the Bird's Nest?]seen as an incense cloud shrouding the Shekinah [= Wisdom - Book of W 10:17, Eccl 24:4] by day and as the shining flaming fire of the 'breaker' [= Messiah] by night. Rising up towards heaven and the Messiah, it will guide the dispersed nation to its homeland.
From the pillar, the Archangel Michael, [who had protected the Exodus tribes with a wall of fire] will give an exceedingly loud-drawn voice/blast of the Messianic Shofar

In the title of this paper, I have promised to tell of new life in Karaim communities. However, before speaking about new life and the signs of it, it seems necessary to say some words about the Karaim communities. The Karaites and the Karaims, in particular, have remained a borderland indeed. Since the space is limited, we must resort to a number of sweping generalizations which unfortunately do not do full justice to the views of the Karaite movement itself. The Karaite reformation movement arose among the Jews in Mesopotamia in the 8th century A.D. Beside other derogatory stories, it has been claimed that 'Anan ben David, a son of the exilarch of the Jews and a descendant of King David, founded the Karaite sect, since his younger brother was set up in his place as the exilarch of the Jews in Mesopotamia. In fact, we do not know the reasons which led 'Anan ben David to preach about a return to the written word of the Hebrew Bible, i.e. the Old Testament, and about the renunciation of the Oral Law which was highly esteemed by the Rabbanite Jews. As a consequence, the Mishna, the Talmudic literature and the whole traditional hermeneutics, the halakha

I have seen the question and answers on "die Karaeer, the Karaites, die Karaimen, ha-qara'im" and I like to add some basic information on theis subject: In the Winter term 2001/2002 I had the opportunity to give two lectures in the "Ringvorlesung": "Geschichte, Sprachen und Literaturen der semitischen Voelker" im Seminar für Semitistik und Arabistik der Freien Universitaet Berlin. (University lectures: History, languages and literatues of the Semitic peoples). My special concern is in Jewish communities in the Medieval period when they used the Arabic language in oral and written communication, though somtimes in Hebrew square script or Samaritan script. There are several sources of this kind, particularly in the Cairo Geniza and Firkovich Collection in St. Petersburg. (I did my Ph.D on the Samaritans.) Today I am working on Transmission of Knowledge in Islamic Societies in Medieval times as depicted in Arabic Biographical Lexica. This includes also Jewish and Christian people when included. Eingangsdatum: Dear listmembers! I am quite surprised to realize that most people do not know about the Karaite branch of Judaism which had been quite strong in the past, both in Eretz Israel and parts of Europe (from Turkey, Balkans, Russia and Baltic States, etc.). Today I believe it has less than 50 000 members in the whole world with the greatest majority living in Israel. I became interested in this subject while researching the history of Jews in my area, Brittany, during WW2 as I found a family whose father was a Karaite. His wife (second wife, the first was also a Karaite Jew) who was Jewish but not a Karaite, was deported to Auschwitz while his two sons, also Karaite, were prisoners of war (from the French Army) in Germany and survived until the end of the war. He was able to live freely in a town here which was occupied by the German Army. No in-depth research has ever been made on this subject, at least in France and also in Germany? As I am preparing a book, I wish I could add some more information on the Karaite group and his story during the war. If you want to know more about this group (I am not Karaite, so I am not trying to proselytise people!) I can send you more information or indicate some websites.. But what interests me at the present time is the presence of this group of people in Nazi Germany which was not regarded as being members of the Jewish "race" or nation and so were "protected" from discriminatory racial laws. I would like very much to find contemporary (World War 2) documents pertaining to them; the problem is how and where? Please, note that I am not sure if there is today still some people belonging to Karaite Judaism (again: a branch, or sect, of Judaism) in Germany? I have heard that some are living in France but was not able to find any address of an organization or synagogue. Apparently these people are extremely discreet and the few contacts I had in Israel did not provide any information regarding the situation in Europe !?

    ABOUT THE BOOK
Notions of history and the past contained in literature of the Karaite Jewish sect offer insight into the relationship of Karaism to mainstream rabbinic Judaism and to Islam and Christianity. Karaite Judaism and Historical Understanding describes how a minority sectarian religious community constructs and uses historical ideology. It investigates the proportioning of historical ideology to law and doctrine and the influence of historical setting on religious writings about the past. In the present volume, Fred Astren discusses modes of representing the past, especially in Jewish culture, and then poses questions about the past in sectarian, particularly Judaic sectarian, contexts. He contrasts early Karaite scripturalism with the literature of rabbinic Judaism, which, embodying historical views that carry a moralistic burden, draws upon the chain of tradition to suppose a generation-to-generation transmission of divine knowledge and authority. Karaites in the medieval Islamic world eschewed historical thinking, in concert with their rejection of the rabbinic concept of tradition. One important medieval Karaite, al-Qirqisani, however, constructed a sophisticated historical argument as part of his philosophical exposition of Karaism, demonstrating theological and philosophical strategies common in Islam and Christianity.

Yaron, Joe Pessah, Avraham Qanai, Avraham Qanao, and Yosef El-Gamil Amazon base price: Average review score: A good place to start If you want to know more about Karaism, what Karaites believe, and have believed, etc., this is a good place to start. The book is systematic. It starts with Karaite history (starting with ancient Jewish history), then proceeds to cover Karaite thought, belief, and practice. It seems a little sparse on some of the details for the holidays (mostly for Yom Teruah - aka Rosh HaShannah, and Yom Kippur), but other than that it is pretty thorough. Biased review As I am one of the contributing authors to the work, I will refrain from commenting on it, any further then to make a slight correction to the kind review of Leonard Fox. Mr. Fox, in his review, has stated: "The reader, however, should be aware that the authors are Karaites from the Egyptian community and tradition, and therefore they do not have the background or linguistic ability to provide information on the customs of the Eastern European Karaites"
