Introduction The New Kadampa Tradition is a special Kadampa tradition of Mahayana Buddhism founded by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Although established as a distinct tradition in 1991, the New Kadampa Tradition arose, as with all Buddhist traditions, from the teachings, example, and blessings of Buddha Shakyamuni. These were then transmitted through a lineage of realized Buddhist Masters, including the Indian Buddhist Master Atisha , the founder of the Old Kadampa Tradition, and the Tibetan Buddhist Masters, Je Tsongkhapa and Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, the root Spiritual Guide, or Guru, of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Buddha Shakyamuni Buddha Shakyamuni, or Gautama Buddha, (circa 6th Century BC), is the fourth of the thousand Buddhas that will appear in this world during what is called the 'Fortunate Aeon'.
Buddha Amithaba Thangka As a Supreme Emanation Body, he performed the twelve principal deeds, and by 'turning the wheel of Dharma', presented the Sutra Teachings of both Hinayana and Mahayana, and appearing in the aspect of Buddha Vajradhara revealed the Vajrayana, or Tantra, teachings. Top Lineage The lineages of these teachings, both their scriptural transmission and realization, were then passed from Teacher to disciple, and spread first within India, then throughout much of Asia, and now to many countries throughout most of the western world. Buddha's teachings, or Dharma, are likened to a wheel that moves from country to country in accordance with changing conditions and people's karmic inclinations. The external forms of presenting Buddhism may change as it meets with different cultures and societies, but its essential authenticity is ensured through the continuation of an unbroken lineage of realized practitioners.

...this is the pure, essential nature of every living being." Geshe Kelsang Gyatso - Transform Your Life, Tharpa publications Meditation helps you:
  • increase positive states of mind reduce stress and anxiety experience greater contentment and well-being improve concentration develop better relationships and, maintain greater physical health.
"The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful. If our mind is peaceful we shall be free from worries and mental discomfort, and we shall experience true happiness; but if our mind is not peaceful we shall find it very difficult to be happy, even if we are living in the very best conditions. If we train in meditation our mind will gradually become more and more peaceful, and we shall experience a purer and purer form of happiness. Eventually, we shall be happy all of the time, even in the most difficult circumstances."

Kadampa Buddhist temples
With the opening of the first Kadampa Buddhist Temple (see picture opposite) at Manjushri Centre Geshe Kelsang Gyatso launched the 'International Temples Project'. The purpose of this project is to build Kadampa Buddhist Temples throughout the world, in every major city of every country, enabling countless people to receive great benefit. We are greatly influenced by our environment. In the modern world, where we are continually surrounded by stimulation, we need a place for quiet, for stillness and inspiration. The new temples will fulfill this need for a very long time. It is hoped that the temples will remain for a thousand years to provide a focus for spiritual practice for generations to come, for the benefit of innumerable living beings. Work is currently underway to build the second Kadampa Temple in New York State. See the website for more information. 3970 Northwest 21st Ave., Oakland Park, Florida 33309 Since the introduction of the first Buddhist texts to America in the mid-nineteenth century, Buddhism has been as extremely influential force among Unitarians and, over the last thirty years, Unitarian Universalists. Early Unitarians, such as Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, and Ralph Waldo Emerson responded with great enthusiasm to Buddhism's emphasis on individual experience, rather than appeal to scriptures or belief in miraculous events, as the basis for authority in spiritual matters. In recent years, Unitarian Universalists have increasingly been drawn to explore Buddhist religious practices, especially seated meditation, in order to ground the "free and responsible search for truth and meaning" that is one of the guiding principles of the UU tradition. Meditation invites a direct and immediate experience of reality and provides a balance to purely intellectual inquiry. From the announcement in the World of a UU-Zen retreat with Rev. James Ishmael Ford, March '96

How to Meditate Course
This was a successful course drawing people from all walks of life. These was a common theme thought: the wish to find some new way of dealing with problems and stress. It seemed as though students of the course had tried between then every method to be happy and yet no-one could say that they had found lasting satisfaction. During the course we tried to change this by showing everyone how to meditate. Again it was amazing to see the progress made. After the first six week course everyone was lighter and every week there were tales of how things that had bothered them in the past were now overcome. Particularly at work individuals were able to be happy where in the past they would have been frustrated or angry. Roll on the next course!
Madhyamaka Centre Fundraising Banquet
Every year Madhyamaka Centre holds a banquet and invites everyone from the classes and local area. This year was the most enjoyable yet. The food was delicious, a five course gastronomic feast created by Chapel Allerton classes' teacher Daniel Rosenberg. Who guests were delighted to find is in addition to being a creative teacher and experienced meditator is also an accomplished chef.
