About Kadampa Buddhism
NEW KADAMPA TRADITION The New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) is the union of Kadampa Buddhist Centres, the international association of study and meditation centres that form the pure tradition of Mahayana Buddhism derived from the Buddhist meditator and scholar Je Tsongkhapa, introduced in the west by the Buddhst teacher Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. The NKT follows the three New Kadampa Tradition Study Programmes to provide people throughout the world with methods to increase inner peace and engage in a steady development of pure happiness leading to the full bliss of enlightenment through the practice of Buddha's teachings. General Programme - weekly meditation classes, day courses and retreats (click on 'meditation classes' or special courses' for more details) Foundation Study Programme - weekly study programme (click on the link for more details) Teacher Training Programme - a more extensive study programme to enable students to train as qualified New Kadampa Tradition teachers.

Kadampa: A Mahayana Buddhist Tradition Kadampa Buddhism was founded by the great Indian Master, Atisha (982-1054). His followers are known as Kadampas: ka refers to Buddha’s teachings, and dam refers to Atisha’s special Lamrim instructions, known as ‘the stages of the path to enlightenment’; pa is a practitioner. The term Kadampa , therefore, means someone who puts all of Buddha’s teachings into practice.
Kadampa Buddhists are encouraged to use Buddha’s teachings as practical methods for transforming ordinary daily activities into the path to enlightenment.
The Kadampa tradition was extensively revised, and given new life, by the Tibetan Teacher and scholar, Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419). His work was of such lasting importance that the tradition since his time has been known as New Kadampa.
The Kadampa Teachers are famous not only as great scholars, but also as spiritual practitioners of immense purity and sincerity.
The lineage of these teachings, scriptural transmissions, and realizations, has passed directly from Teacher to disciple, for many centuries. First carried from India into Tibet, almost a thousand years ago, they have, in our own time, been carried worldwide.
Buddha’s teachings, which are known as Dharma, are often thought of as a wheel which moves from country to country in response to changing conditions and people’s inner, karmic potential.
