The Kadampa tradition was later promoted widely in Tibet by Je Tsongkhapa and his followers, who were known as the 'New Kadampas'. Transforming daily activities into the path
By integrating their knowledge of all Buddha's teachings into their practice of Lamrim, and by integrating this into their everyday lives, Kadampa Buddhists are encouraged to use Buddha's teachings as practical methods for transforming daily activities into the path to enlightenment. http://website.lineone.net/~kwelos/kadampa.htm
Kadampa Buddhism - NKT According to the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT), Buddhist beliefs are of little use if just held intellectually, they also need to be 'realised' intuitively and then mixed with the root mind. The main motivation of Buddhist training is to develop deep compassion for all sentient beings, this is known as bodhicitta.
The eminent Tibetan scholar Geshe Kelsang Gyatso states in Universal Compassion [1] that compassion is the root of a Buddha because all Buddhas arise fom the mind of compassion, it is the root of Dharma because Buddhas give Dharma teachings out of compassion for others, and it is the root of the Sangha (the community of Buddhist practitioners) because it is impossible to become Sangha without practising compassion. Universal Compassion is a translation and commentary on Geshe Chekhawa's Training the mind in Seven Points. It is probably the clearest and most beautiful explanation in the English language of Mahayana teachings and meditational practices on compassion.
Buddhist teachings on compassion are extremely practical. Their immediate purpose is to lessen the stress on ourselves and those around us by making us more peaceful, understanding and patient. Ultimately, they reduce the negative imprints in our root mind that form the causes of uncontrolled rebirth and the obstacles to liberation.

The New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) Kadampa Buddhism is dedicated to bringing peace and happiness to all living beings. It is a living school of Mahayana (meaning, Great Vehicle) Buddhism which clearly demonstrates methods for increasing temporary and ultimate happiness, as originally taught by Buddha. These teachings were re-presented by the great Indian Master, Atisha, in the 10th century. "Ka" means "word" and refers to Buddha's teachings; "dam" refers to Atisha's special instructions, known as The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment; "pa" refers to those who integrate their knowledge into meditations on the Stages of the Path. By integrating this into their daily life, Kadampa Buddhists gain a powerful ability to transform their minds, create inner peace, and make genuine spiritual progress. The great Kadampa Teachers and practitioners are famous not only for being great scholars but also as spiritual practitioners of immense purity and sincerity. These teachings have been passed down in an unbroken lineage from teacher to disciple and have spread throughout the world. As the teachings spread and adapt to different cultures, their presentation may vary, but their essential meaning, authenticity, and effectiveness remain unaltered. The Resident Teachers in any given nation speak the language and understand their students' culture.

Currently, we are studing Tantric Grounds and Paths by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. The mysteries of Tantra have engrossed countless meditators for centuries. Since the time of Buddha, these secrets have been passed down from accomplished master to disciple largely by word of mouth. Now drawing from his own experience and the works of Je Tsongkhapa and other Tibetan Yogis, Geshe Kelsang clearly sets out all the stages of the four classes of Tantra, giving a full explanation of generation and completion stages. Tantra is revealed as the gateway to a blissful new world.

Kadampa Buddhism - NKT
The Kadampa tradition was founded in Tibet by the Indian teacher Atisha (982 - 1054). Up to the time of the great reformer Lama Tsongkhapa (1357 - 1419) it was known as the Old Kadampa Tradition. After the time of Lama Tsongkhapa it is known as the New Kadampa Tradition ( NKT ). Initially there were two principle lines of teaching (lineages) passed down from Buddha Shakyamuni. These were the wisdom lineage of Nagarjuna and the method lineage of Asanga. The wisdom lineage, which emphasises the teachings on sunyata, or emptiness of inherent existence , passed from Buddha Shakyamuni to Manjushri, from Manjushri to Nagarjuna, then to Chandrakirti and further Indian Buddhist masters. The method lineage, which emphasises moral discipline and compassion passed from Buddha Shakyamuni to Maitreya, from Maitreya to Asanga and then to Vasubandhu and further Indian masters. The great Indian teacher Atisha gathered these two lineages together and brought them to Tibet, where Buddhism, originally introduced by Padmasambhava, had been seriously weakened by persecution. Atisha successfully revived Buddhism in Tibet. His principal teachings are known as Lamrim and are set down in 'Lamp for the Stages of the Path'. Lama Tsongkhapa (1357 - 1419) was born at a time when Tibetan Buddhism was being undermined by confusion. He single-handedly reformed and revitalised Tibetan Buddhism giving it the clarity and impetus which has lasted to the present day. Eminent modern Kadampa scholars have included Je Pabongkhapa, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso is a noted translator and author who is responsible for the introduction of Lama Tsongkhapa's teachings to western readers. A very brief introduction to Kadampa meditational practice is given in the

Stress and meditation
Several years ago when I was going through a period of stress, I saw a poster for a meditation course. It was run by a Buddhist organization called the New Kadampa Tradition ( NKT ). I knew very little about Buddhism (and was later to find what I thought I knew was wrong), and absolutely nothing about the NKT. So I turned up at the first meeting with some trepidation. What was I going to find - a cult, a sect, a bunch of latter-day hippies, or weirdo religious fanatics asking me whether I was 'saved' or 'born again'? (My mother always said once was enough). I was pleasantly surprised to find that everyone there seemed reasonably normal (at any rate by my standards) and the 'religious aspects' were very low key. The emphasis was on using meditation techniques to produce beneficial results in our everyday life. This suited me, because I was a total materialist who had abandoned childhood religious beliefs by my early teens. The NKT teachers gave some philosophical teachings, but for the most part these seemed very humanistic and sensible. Nevertheless, I couldn't really see how it was possible for Buddhists to believe that the mind was anything other than the brain, or that there exists any non-material aspect to the universe. Religious background - early childhood I was baptised as an Anglican, probably to please my grandparents since my father is an atheist and my mother agnostic. Consequently, I passed my early childhood in blissful ignorance of any form of religion.

Modern Day Kadampas:
The New Kadampa Tradition is a special Kadampa tradition of Mahayana Buddhism, founded by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Although established as a distinct tradition in 1991, the New Kadampa Tradition arose, as with all Buddhist traditions, from the teaching, example and blessings of Buddha Shakyamuni. These were then transmitted through a lineage of realised Buddhist Masters, including the Indian Buddhist Master Atisha, the founder of the Old Kadampa Tradition, and the Tibetan Buddhist Masters, Je Tsongkhapa and Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, the root spiritual guide, or Guru, of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche.
Buddha taught how to examine our mind and see which states produce misery and confusion, and which states produce health and happiness.
He taught how to overcome the compulsively non-virtuous minds that confine us to states of discontent and misery, and how to cultivate the virtuous minds that liberate us from pain and lead us to the bliss of full enlightenment. Buddha Shakyamuni, or Gautama Buddha, (circa 6th century BC), is the fourth of the thousand Buddhas that will appear in this world during what is called the 'Fortunate Aeon'. As a Supreme Emanation Body, he performed the twelve principal deeds, and by 'turning the wheel of Dharma', presented the Sutra teachings of both Hinayana and Mahayana, and appearing in the aspect of Buddha Vajradhara revealed the Vajrayana, or Tantra, teachings.

Buddha's teachings, which are known as Dharma, are likened to a wheel that moves from country to country in accordance with changing conditions and people's karmic inclinations. The external forms of presenting Buddhism may change as it meets with different cultures and societies, but its essential authenticity is ensured through the continuation of an unbroken lineage of realized practitioners.

The Kadampa Way quickly spread through Tibet and other regions of Asia soon after, establishing a strong lineage across borders, ethnicities and cultures. The followers of Master Atisha are known today as Ka-dam-pas - Ka meaning word and referring to the teachings of Buddha and dam referring to the stages of the path to enlightenment. Traditional Kadampa practice entered into western society around 1977, through the efforts of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso and other founding members of what is known today as the New Kadampa Tradition(NKT).
