You're here, and you want to be there. But you're not there, and won't be there for a good while. So do you act as if you're already there? Or do you tell yourself that here's just fine, and who needs there anyway? WEEKLY SERMONETTE Timeless Torah We accept those practices we identify with, but pronounce others as "old-fashioned," and obsolete. What is the underlying argument that allows us the luxury of that rationalization? Rivkah Slonim is co-director of the Chabad House at Binghamton University. A self-described "Chassidic Feminist," she has lectured nationally on family and women's issues. She is the author of

There are only fourteen million Jews worldwide, but judaism is a faith that spawned Christianity and Islam. Learn judaism. judaism

HOME TIME AND SPACE PREHISTORY MESOPOTAMIA ... Islam Judaism Judaism is the oldest religion of the western world and has influenced Chris tianity and Islam. There are approximately fifteen million Jews throughout the world.
The Hebrews were the ancestors of the Jewish people and trace their ancestry to Abraham, who left his home in the Mesopotamian city of Ur about 2200BC. The Hebrews were different from others of their time because they were monotheistic; they believed in only one God. The Hebrews believed they had a special relationship with their God and that they were his chosen people.
The Hebrews returned to Israel, but they were conquered by several other cultures. In time, most of the Hebrews were forced to leave Israel, beginning a period known as the Diaspora. The Hebrews were forced to live as minorities in many different lands until the creation of the Jewish nation of Israel in 1948.
Jewish people have often faced severe mistreatment. European Jews were ordered to leave Spain by Ferdinand and Isabella, and faced organized massacres called pogroms in many nations, particularly in Eastern Europe. In this century, approximately six million Jews were murdered in what we now call the Holocaust, where the Nazi party in Germany attempted genocide, or the planned killing of a whole group of people because of their religion or nationality.

W We strive to serve Judaism and our members through worship service, Jewish education for children and adults, social and cultural activities, special experiences for all ages and life cycle ceremonies. Rabbi Isaak
(Click for Bio) N eveh Shalom was formed by the merger of two existing Conservative congregations in 1961. One of those original synagogues (Ahavai Shalom) was founded in 1869 and the other (Neveh Zedek) in 1895. We are the second oldest Jewish congregation in the Pacific Northwest and the oldest Conservative congregation on the West Coast. This history and longevity establishes for our membership a sense of respect for our traditions at the same time as we encourage new concepts and innovations. We are a multi-generational congregation of nearly 1,000 family units. Our programs range from a bi-weekly Tot Shabbat service to Senior Citizen events. Our building was built in 1961 and is situated in residential southwest Portland on property surrounded by trees, reflective of our appreciation of the beauty that is Oregon. Religious services are led by our Rabbi, Daniel Isaak, and our Cantor, Linda Shivers, abd our ritual director Aaron Vitells. Our Rabbi Emeritus, Joshua Stampfer, also actively participates in the ritual observance of our congregation. There is a full array of regularly scheduled services; please check the current calendar for details.
