    The History of Messianic Judaism
What are Messianic Jews? Remember the first church was entirely Jewish and did not have a special label. They were just Jews who believed Yeshua from Nazareth was the Messiah and updated their Jewish worship in the light of Messiah having come. As the church became more gentile, there were difficulties which turned away more Jews ( see The Wild Olive ) The destruction of Jerusalem and the dispersion led to the development of rabbinic Judaism, which moved away from scriptural faith based around Temple worship and atonement, and opened up the division between the believers in Yeshua and non believers. Rabbinic Judaism was developed by the Pharisees, those with whom Yeshua had his strongest confrontations. (see Church History Through church history there have been a small number of Jews who have believed in Yeshua , but regrettably, it appears they mostly had to become gentile Christians and sever their connections with their Jewish heritage. In the mid nineteenth century in Kishineff the capital of Bessarabia, during a time of intense persecution by Russia, Joseph Rabbinovitch, a Jewish lawyer and teacher discovered Yeshua as Messiah. He went to the Holy Land, convinced that salvation for the Jews would only come through a return. On his arrival he began reading a New Testament, which he had been assured would give a reliable description of historic locations. As he read, he became convince that Jesus was/is the Messiah. He went home convinced of the need to share his newly fulfilled faith in its thoroughly Jewish context. All of this was accomplished between Rabinovitch and the Holy Spirit, and not by preaching from a Christian. The truth was available to a man who was open to receive it. This movement was the first to use the term "Messianic Jew"

Yeshua ha Meshiach or Yeshua the Messiah Dear Jewish visitor, Please note that the author of wildolive is not Jewish, but this page was jointly written with Jewish believers in Eretz Israel. Please accept this page in the name of Yeshua with much love and deep gratitude for all that Y'hudah has given us Gentile believers. You gave us the Tanakh, Yeshua and the Apostles who wrote our "New Testament". As Rabbi Shaul wrote to the believers in Rome (Romans 11 v17), we are like wild olive branches grafted into the cultivated olive tree of Israel. Please also accept our regrets for all the wrongs done to your people through History Hopefully the following quick trip through the Tanakh and Brit hadasha will help explain the basics of Messianic belief. From the beginning When Elohim created man and woman and put them in a garden, He placed only one prohibition on them. He said, "You shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil or you will surely die". The serpent talked them into disobeying, promising that they would be like God. (Genesis 3 v5) They ate and their innocent relationship with Elohim died. This is sometimes referred to as "the Fall", or the first sin ( sin meaning falling short of the required standard). God threw them out of the garden into the world of death, decay and sadness we see today. However

The Rise of messianic judaism . But messianic judaism properly so called, sees this evangelism within a different framework from the Evangelical mainstream.
    http://www.baruchhashem.com/resources/riseofmj.html
    The Rise of "Messianic Judaism"
by Peter Hocken The rise of Messianic Judaism in the late 1960's and early 1970's represents as much a new direction and a discontinuity with the "Hebrew Christian" movement as it represents a continuity. The change of title, expressed in the re-naming of the Hebrew Christian Alliance of America as the Messianic Jewish Alliance of America What happened to win over the Jewish believers in Jesus to the Messianic Jewish vision they had earlier been so loath to embrace? The following factors all seem to have played a definite role: (1) the impact of the Six-Day War of 1967; (2) the charismatic movement; (3) the Jesus movement and the student upheavals of 1968. the Israeli victory in the Six-Day War gave a new self-confidence to some Hebrew Christians with a sense of the importance of biblical prophecies concerning Israel. The Jesus movement that was outside the denominations saw many young Jews come to faith in Jesus, and this produced a notable influx of new young believers into the Young Hebrew Christian Alliance. Many future leaders in the Messianic Jewish movement came from this crop of new young believers. Developments within the Messianic Jewish movement in the USA As mentioned, the change from Hebrew Christian terminology to that of Messianic Judaism arose from an influx of mostly young new Jewish believers in Jesus and an impulse to form Messianic synagogues. Much of this new thrust was charismatic. The tensions inherent in the movement, especially concerning the degree of Jewish practice to embody, were augmented by the Evangelical-Charismatic tussle.

  • Name: Messianic Jewish Alliance of America
  • Founder : The group is literally an alliance of Hebrew Christians who believe in Jesus but retain their Jewish identity. When MJAA was founded in the summer of 1979 there were initially thirty-three congregations. Daniel Juster was the first president, but several persons were involved in bringing the alliance into existence. Messianic Jewes attribute the founding of Messianic Judaism to their Messiah, Yeshua, or Jesus of Nazareth.
  • Date of Birth: (0-33 A.D.)
  • Birth Place: Taking into consideration the beliefs of the Messianic Jews that Yeshua was the sole founder, his birthplace was in Bethlehem.
  • Year Founded: The MJAA was founded in 1979. However, many Messianic Jews believe that Messianic Judaism was founded upon the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. During the first century A.D., literally hundreds of thousands of Messianic Jews flourished. In addition, many Messianic Synagogues were scattered throughout the Roman Empire and beyond.
  • Brief History: The Messianic Jewish Alliance of America, or the MJAA, was founded upon a threefold principle. First, to promote a clear and visible testimony to the fact that there resides a substantial and growing movement of Jewish people who believe that Yeshua, or Jesus of Nazareth, is the Jewish Messiah and Savior of the World. Second, to bring together, into one coherent organization, Jewish and non-Jewish people of like faith and mind with the shared vision for the Jewish revival. Third, and most significantly, to introduce the Jewish people to Yeshua, the Messiah.

    THE REBIRTH OF MESSIANIC JUDAISM,
    by
    David Sedaca

The second half of the 20th century has witnessed the rise of Messianic Judaism, a movement that has finally found its niche in the religious world. Today, Messianic Judaism is rapidly growing in different parts of the world: Israel, North and South America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Because of its history and the impact of such a movement in the light of biblical interpretation, it cannot be dismissed as an experiment to be tested or a fad to be tried out. Any conscious analysis of Messianic Judaism has to be performed against its own historical and
biblical backdrop. What is Messianic Judaism?
Messianic Judaism is the term used to define a form of lifestyle and worship that fully identifies with Jewish customs and traditions while believing that Yeshua (Jesus) of Nazareth is the promised Messiah of the Jewish Scriptures At the same time, Messianic Judaism holds most emphatically that it is part of the universal body of Messiah, the church, but claims the right to express itself, both in its daily life and worship style, in a way that agrees with its Jewish heritage.
    Looking back through the years
The reappearance of Messianic Judaism. Messianic Judaism of today did not develop in a vacuum but it is the logical consequence of a process that began 2,000 years ago, when a young Jewish man began to preach that the messianic hopes proclaimed by the prophets of Israel were fulfilled in Him. Most scholars agree that this man, Yeshua, lived a lifestyle consistent with first century Judaism. From Jewish records and church historians, we know that, even after the first century, when Messianic Jews ceased to be the leaders of the church, there were individual Jews who believed in Jesus.

    What is Messianic Judaism?
It is impossible to understand what Messianic Judaism is without knowing a bit of history...
    Scriptural Judaism
Older than and much different from modern Rabbinical Judaism is what this essay will label Scriptural Judaism: how the Torah told the Israelites to be Jewish. It is not a modern division of Judaism. It cannot be practiced today because it relies on animal sacrifices, and Leviticus 17:8-9 has prohibited these since the Second Temple was destroyed in the year 70 C.E.. So there are no Scriptural Jewish congregations, as there are Rabbinically Jewish congregations and Messianic Jewish congregations. The Judaism of Yeshua's day was Scriptural Judaism. It was augmented by much rabbinical teaching, but its focus was the Temple and its rituals and sacrifices.
    Judaism Divides
In the year 70 C.E. the Second Temple was destroyed. It was no longer possible to practice Scriptural Judaism. Without the Temple sacrifices to atone for their sins, what would the Jewish people do? At that time there were many sects of Judaism: Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, Zealots, Nazarenes. All of these were different ways of augmenting Scriptural Judaism with other teachings. Only two of these sects survived: the Pharisees and the Nazarenes.

Romans 11:11 "Again I ask, Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious." A new thing on the Earth In many evangelical circles, there is discussion of a fairly recent, but rapidly growing phenomenon: Messianic Judaism. There are very popular national television shows about it, and no less a publication than Christianity Today magazine has recently done a major article about it. Students at Christian colleges and universities are asking about it. And churches are divided, in the words of the CT writer, "taking turns supporting and condemning" this new happening. What is it? What is Messianic Judaism? That’s a pretty easy question to answer, in general. Messianic Jews are those Jews who believe that the Messiah promised in the Bible has already come (they are waiting for him to come again ), and that He is the one who Christians call Jesus. They maintain their Jewish lifestyle and identity, but believe they are redeemed through God’s grace, by faith in the Messiah, Jesus (who they know as Yeshua, his Hebrew name). There are hundreds of Messianic Jewish congregations, with a growing representation on virtually every continent.

    Messianic Judaism
Miles J. Stanford Pauline Dispensationalism , (Colorado Springs: MJS Books, 1993), Chapter 10, p. 45-54. Many Jews are being saved today, but few are established dispensationally; as a result, they are strongly Galatianized. As Christians they are both Judaistic, and Judaizers, constituting a definite contribution to the delinquency of Dispensationalism. Due to its lack of dispensational, rightly-divided protection, the Messianic Jew movement here in the United States has fallen prey to the two main detrimental factors—tongues, and the law. The entire group is based upon the latter—the legal aspects of the undivided Word. The charismatic integration is primarily due to the ‘Jews for Jesus’ influence. Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum Dr. Fruchtenbaum, graduate 1971 from Dallas Theological Seminary, [now adjunct professor at both Tyndale and Chafer Theological Seminary] has written a 142-page book titled Hebrew Christianity . His thesis is typical of American Messianism. This will be brought out from the book, along with our brief comments. What then is a Hebrew Christian? He is a Jew who believes that Jesus Christ is his Messiah. He must acknowledge that he is both a Jew and a Christian (p. 12).
