Language can both help and trick us in cross-cultural communication. The following material is written in Messianic Jewish terminology and style. It shows us the challenges we "Christians" [ more ] face in cross-cultural communication with Jews. This material is based on Return of the Remnant: The Rebirth of Messianic Judaism Messianic terminology is used to express the biblical faith in the Messiah [ more ] because such terminology was how the New Covenant [ more ] faith was expressed in its earliest stages. Messianic believers like talking about their faith in the Messiah in a manner consistent with Jewish heritage and culture. Belief in the Messiah is consistent with being Jewish. He is the fulfillment of God's promises to Israel. Using Messianic terminology imparts faith in Messiah to children, friends and family in a manner consistent with Jewish heritage. Messianic terms communicate biblical truth without the negative baggage of historical anti-Semitism.

What Is Messianic Judaism?
by Chaia Kravitz The question asked most often about Messianic Judaism is, "What exactly *is* Messianic Judaism?" Messianic Judaism commonly refers to Jewish people who have accepted Yeshua as their Savior. It is a movement that is thousands of years old, but has been gaining more prominence and momentum within the last century. The first followers of Yeshua were Jewish. In that sense, Messianic Judaism is the oldest and original "Christian" denomination. However, when the Gentile church was established, Messianic Jews were given the choices of either returning to the mainstream Jewish synagogues, where they would have to forfeit their faith in Yeshua, or join the Gentile church, where they were expected to drop their Jewish lifestyles and assimilate. Unfortunately, the majority chose the latter, so many of the early Messianic Jews disappeared into the Church. In the 1800's, a revival occurred and Messianic Judaism as we know it today was re-born as many Jews came to faith in Yeshua while wishing to maintain their Jewish roots.

Overview:
Messianic Judaism is a religious movement, composed of faith groups that are mainly attended by ethnic/cultural Jews. They differ from Reform, Conservative, Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox Jews over their beliefs about the Messiah. writetop("What Is Messianic Judaism?") Overview Messianic Judaism is a Biblically-based movement of people who, as committed Jews, believe in Yeshua (Jesus) as the Jewish Messiah of Israel of whom the Jewish Law and Prophets spoke. To many this seems a glaring contradiction. Christians are Christians, Jews are decidedly not Christian. So goes the understanding that has prevailed through nearly two thousand years of history. Messianic Jews call this a mistaken - and even anti-Scriptural - understanding. Historical and Biblical evidence demonstrates that following Yeshua was initially an entirely Jewish concept. Decades upon decades of persecution, division, and confused theology all contributed to the dichotomy between Jews and believers in Yeshua that many take for granted today. The First Century Two thousand years ago Yeshua was a Jew living among Jewish people. "Yeshua," by which Jesus was called during his time on earth, is itself a Hebrew word for "Salvation." Yeshua kept Torah, or the Law of Moses. He studied the Jewish Scriptures that many now know as the "Old Testament," and read them aloud at the local synagogue on Shabbat (Luke 4:16). He was called rabbi ("master") by his followers. "Think not that I came to abolish the law and the prophets: I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them." - Yeshua, Matthew 5:17

During the nineteenth century, restrictions on the Jewish population were alternately eased and tightened. Alexander II (r. 1855-81), for example, relaxed restrictions on settlement, education, and employment. Alexander's assassination in 1881 brought reimposition of all previous restrictions, which then remained in force until 1917. During that period, Jews were beaten and killed and their property destroyed in government-sanctioned pogroms led by a group called the Black Hundreds. Despite repressive conditions in Russia and high levels of emigration to the United States, the Jewish population grew rapidly in the nineteenth century; by the beginning of World War I, an estimated 5.2 million Jews lived in Russia. Within their areas of settlement, the Russian Jews developed a flourishing culture, and many of them became active in the revolutionary movements that sprang up in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. But much of the long period of violence that began with World War I in 1914 and continued until the Civil War ended in 1921 took place in the regions inhabited by the Jews, many of whom were killed indiscriminately by the various armies struggling for power. After World War I, parts of the western territory of the former Russian Empire became the independent nations of Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland, a development that left many Russian Jews outside the borders of what now was the Soviet Union. By 1922 Russia's Jewish population had been reduced by more than half.

Membership Israel Members Only Sign In Miscellaneous Blog Image Awards True Jewish Heroes News News News Archive The Quiet Holocaust The Perfidious Plot to Convert Jews By Meira Bat Avraham It's not easy being a Jew. Ours is a faith of personal accountability, of strict rules for daily life, of social obligations and community covenant. Our hardfast commitment to our people, our laws, our G-d, have spawned in an intolerant world hatred, an ever-growing resolution to force us to change, and now, renewed commitment to dwindle our ranks. The more blatant results of anti-Semitism, are, of course, well known to us. We will never forget the Inquisition, the pogroms of eastern Europe, the Holocaust. We are reminded regularly of the ongoing rejection of our people each time we receive hate literature, see news from Israel, eye skinheads on the street, hear Louis Farrakhan's vile speeches. However, perhaps the most insidious, dangerous, and hateful anti-Semitism is more subtle, less easy to spot, less provoking of criticism. This type of anti-Semitism is societally condoned. It can be characterized as "affectionate, compassionate anti-Semitism". I am speaking of the evangelical Christians, particularly the Baptists, who are attempting to LOVE US TO DEATH.

Does the renaissance man exist today? Technically, no. Our knowledge has become to vast for anyone to know even one subject, particularly in the sciences, very well. In the general sense, yes, the Renaissance man can exist because the Renaissance man knows how to live. He is not so fixated on future accomplishment that he cannot enjoy each moment to the fullest. He sees beauty in everything God has made. He can appreciate literature or deep theology and he can work with his hands. He can speak intelligently on many subjects and has gotten his hands dirty in quite a few. This is life. filling every moment with meaning, enjoying the time we have on this earth.
We are all on a journey, walking through life. Some people put blinders on and stride toward some perceived goal only to be disappointed in the end. Some just plop down in front of the TV and go nowhere. The Renaissance man strolls along, smelling the flowers, stopping to talk to people he meets on the way, enjoying the scenery. This site is a description of some of my journey. You are welcome to walk along for a time, even if it is just in cyberspace. Find something that interests you at the moment, read and think. If I cause you to ponder, to think about something from a different angle or even just to pause in your busy day and find some way to appreciate being alive, I will feel that this effort will have meaning. What is Messianic Judaism?
Messianic Jews?....It’s a term that is being heard more and more these days. Succinctly defined, we are Jews who believe that Yeshua (the Hebrew name for Jesus) of Nazareth is the promised Messiah of the Jewish Scriptures. Because we believe Yeshua is the Jewish Messiah, we also believe in maintaining a Jewish lifestyle of faith. Hence, we celebrate all of the biblical holidays (i.e. Passover, Succot, etc.) as well as many of the customs which are consistent with the Scriptures. For much of history it has been assumed that Jewishness and Yeshua are mutually exclusive. Of course, it’s fine for any non-Jew to believe in Him-but a Jew? However, when one stops to study the actual history of this movement, it becomes clear that this assumption was not always the case. After all, this Messianic movement did not originate in Rome or Athens, but started in the land of Israel in the midst of the Jewish people. Most scholars agree that its leader lived a lifestyle consistent with first century Judaism. He worshipped on the "Shabbat" (Luke 4:16 ff.), celebrated all the Jewish holidays such as "Passover" and "Chanukah" (Matthew 26:17 ff.; John 10:22 ff.) and even wore the traditional; "tzitzit" (Matthew 9:20). Likewise, His Name "Yeshua" testifies to His Jewish identity, since it is Hebrew for "Salvation."
