Welcome!
Welcome to Judaism 101! Judaism 101 is an online encyclopedia of Judaism, covering Jewish beliefs, people, places, things, language, scripture, holidays, practices and customs. My goal is to make freely available a wide variety of basic, general information about Judaism, written from a traditional perspective in plain English. This web site is constantly growing, with new information added every few weeks. Everything in this web site is free to use or distribute in any way, with three conditions: 1) if you use text, graphics or sound from this site, please credit this site; 2) do not redistribute this information for profit; 3) do not "mirror" this site or copy pages from this site for use on other web sites. For further details, please see my page. The information in this site is written predominantly from the Orthodox viewpoint, because I believe that is the starting point for any inquiry into Judaism. As recently as 200 years ago, this was the only Judaism, and it still is the only Judaism in many parts of the world. Be aware, however, that many Jews do not follow all of the traditions described here, or in the precise form described here. The

Tanakh (Hebrew Bible)
The Tanakh is the Hebrew Bible, the quintessential sacred text. The first five books of this comprise the Torah (or Pentateuch), the core sacred writings of the ancient Jews, traditionally written by Moses under divine inspiration. Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) Unicode with vowels. Tanakh (English Translation) The text of the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
Talmud
The Babylonian Talmud Translated by M.L. Rodkinson [1918] This massive ten volume abridgement of the Talmud, the Jewish compendium of law and tradition, is the only extensive public domain translation. It is presented for the first time anywhere on the Internet at sacred-texts.com. Sayings of the Jewish Fathers (Pirqe Aboth) Translated by Charles Taylor [1897] This is a beautiful extract from the Talmud, which has been used as liturgy. Devoted to ethics with some mystical touches, the Pirqe Aboth is distinguished for its transparency and simplicity. This was one of the first English translations in modern times of any portion of the Talmud. Hebraic Literature Edited by Maurice Harris [1901] Extracts from the Talmud, Midrash and Kabbalah.

Machba (Merkaz haCHishuvim haBein-Universitai, the Israeli Interuniversity Computer Center) has an informative Israel Academic Network(ILAN) FAQ. Judaism and Jewish Apologetics (1997)
Guido G.B. Deimel
"Those who wish to seek out the causes of miracles, and to understand the things of nature as philosophers, and not stare at them in astonishment like fools, are soon considered heretical and impious and proclaimed as such by those whom the mob adore as the interpreters of nature and the gods. For these men know that once ignorance is put aside, that wonderment would be taken away which is the only means by which their authority is preserved." [
Preface
New Testament Scriptures. They have not been told by their parents to cherish or worship Jesus Christ when they were children, and thus they are not used to believing in the virgin birth or other absurdities. But what about their own religion? To many Jews the basic tenet of Judaism and Jewish teaching is a "message of morality, tolerance, peace and human dignity" Is this true?
Introduction
For several reasons Jewish believers are confronted with much less logical problems than Christian believers of most denominations. Jews never had to cope with logical inconsistencies of the New Testament. Accordingly, Jews in all of history also had the advantage of logic and consistency on their side, in so far as problems arose out of New Testament interpretations of verses taken from the Old Testament: this collection of sacred Scriptures is called the Tanakh by Jews and to them represents the entire Bible.

(tax deductible) Books of the Month More Money Than God: Living a Rich Life Without Losing Your Soul
By Steven Z. Leder
More Money Than God explores how money affects our families, friends, work, loves, ethics, and feelings of self-worth. Where does money lust come from? How do you teach your children the value of money and giving? What do you do when money is tearing apart your marriage or relationship? How do you deal with losing money through death, divorce, or job loss? More Money Than God will show you how to balance your life as carefully as your bank account. Readers will learn why money and spirituality are not mutually exclusive and, as many unscrupulous company heads are discovering, why you must conduct your business affairs as if God were the ultimate CEO. With the guidance of this book, readers will learn: How to keep money from being a focal point. How to understand the difference between wants and needs. What kind of moral code to live by while seeking the comfort that money brings. How to teach children well, not wealth. How much is too much. Author Steven Leder uses his 15 years of experience as a religious leader and spiritual counselor to tackle the questions with which all of us wrestle on a daily basis.

It shows us the challenges we "Christians" [ more ] face in cross-cultural communication with Jews. This material is based on Return of the Remnant: The Rebirth of Messianic Judaism Messianic terminology is used to express the biblical faith in the Messiah [ more ] because such terminology was how the New Covenant [ more ] faith was expressed in its earliest stages. Messianic believers like talking about their faith in the Messiah in a manner consistent with Jewish heritage and culture. Belief in the Messiah is consistent with being Jewish. DESCRIPTION OF
JUDAISM
Click Here to Visit our Sponsors. The term "G-d" is used in this essay to respect the Jewish prohibition against spelling the name or title of the deity in full. Dates listed which are prior to the 4th century BCE are approximate.
Early History of Judaism
Circa 2000 BCE , the G-d of the ancient Israelites established a divine covenant with Abraham, making him the patriarch of many nations. The term Abramic Religions is derived from his name. These are the four religions which trace their roots back to Abraham: Judaism, Christianity, Islam and the Baha'i World Faith. The book of Genesis describes the events surrounding the lives of the three patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. (Joseph, who is recognized as a fourth patriarch by Christians is not considered one by Jews). Moses was the next leader of the ancient Israelites. He led his people out of captivity in Egypt, and received the Law from G-d. After decades of wandering through wilderness, Joshua led the tribes into the promised land, driving out the Canaanites through a series of military battles. The original tribal organization was converted into a kingdom by Samuel; its first king was Saul. The second king, David, established Jerusalem as the religious and political center. The third king, Solomon built the first temple there.
