To Whom It May Concern:
For the past six years a group of ex- members and children-of-members of a high-demand, coercive Christian sect have been volunteering their time to produce a monthly newsletter called KIT ('Keep In Touch'). This sect has been known variously as the Bruderhof, Los Hermanos Hutterianos (in Paraguay in the 1940s-50s), The Society of Brothers (in the 1950s), The Hutterian Brethren (in the 1970s-80s) and as The Hutterian Brethren East (early 1990s). They now may have to change their name yet again because they have been excommunicated by all branches of The Hutterian Church and, most recently, separated from a final splinter Hutterite group in Manitoba, Canada.
Despite the Bruderhof's attempts to graft themselves upon the 450-year-old Hutterite root, they differ from the old-order Hutterites in a variety of important ways: they believe in the infallibility of the leading Elder, and that members must surrender not only all of their possessions, but also their consciences, minds and bedroom privacy to the leadership (which in our opinion makes them a totalitarian sect with serious cultic aspects). Bruderhof novices have to turn in all their material assets and, when they decide to leave or are kicked out, never have their property refunded (in direct opposition to what the term ÔnoviceÕ means in Christian monastic orders Ñ and to what the original Bruderhof by-laws state in which the novice can just loan his property.

The Third Annual Partnering for our Future! Awards were presented to the Helen Schuler Coulee Centre to recognize their dedication to the river valley through their educational programs and to Sorgaard Ranches to honour their work and commitment to ensure their livestock have a minimal impact on the Little Bow River.
The Helen Schuler Coulee Centre has been educating the community about the river valley environment for more than 21 years. In 2002 an exhibit was created to focus solely on the Oldman River. Visitors learned about floods, river species, watersheds, historic uses and water quality concerns. To enhance the Nature Centre display, a special interpretive show called "The Oldman River" was also created. This western style play was performed in the summer in Galt Gardens and explored the complicated interconnectedness of the Oldman River. The Nature Centre staff and volunteers are committed to sharing their passion for nature and the belief that: Appreciation leads to Understanding which leads to Protection
In the early spring of 2001, Sorgaard Ranches contacted the County of Lethbridge to discuss concerns regarding the impact their buffalo and cattle had on the riparian zone of the Lower Little Bow River. Even before Sorgaard Ranching sought outside help, they were developing ideas to lessen their livestock's impact on the riparian area.

Hutterites in North America About 36,000 Hutterites live in 434 colonies in North America today. Where do the Hutterites live?
The Hutterites are divided into three groups: Schmiedeleut subdivided into two groups, the Hutterian Brethren and the Committee Hutterites, in 1992. The Schmiedeleut are all found in Manitoba; and North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota. 2) Dariusleut; and 3) Lehrerleut . The Lehrerleut and the Dariusleut are located in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Colombia; and Montana and Washington. When a colony reaches about 130 people, a new colony is established. In 1917, South Dakota had 17 colonies but with the outbreak of World War I, the pacifists Hutterites were mistreated and they resettled in Canada. By the 1920s, some of the Hutterites bought back some of their land in the U.S. Read an article on the "40 Mile" Colony , located between Hardin, Montana, and Sheridan, Wyoming. Tour the Hutterite colonies in Manitoba, Canada. All the "traditional" Hutterites live in the Great Plains and Prairie Provinces ; but the Bruderhof Communities, who call themselves Hutterian Brethren live in the East. The Hutterian Brethren Church of the Dariusleut and Lehrerleut Conference (with the agreement of many Schmiedleut communities) expelled the "Society of Brothers" [Bruderhof] in 1990.

member of Hutterian Brethren, Anabaptist sect that found refuge from persecution in Moravia and the Tirol; it stressed community of goods on the model of the primitive church in Jerusalem. The community, which acquired the name of its charismatic leader, Jakob Hutter (tortured and burned as a heretic in 1536), still survives, mostly in the western sections of the United States and Canada with a population of about 20,000. In colonies of 60 to 150 persons, they operate collective farms ( Bruderhof ) and, not unlike the Old Order Amish, remain aloof from outside society, taking no part in politics. Children are educated inside the colony until age 14 or until a minimum age decreed by state or province.

This consultation in Geneva ("Prague IV") was different. It was organized by the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in cooperation with the Lutheran World Federation and the Mennonite World Conference. In addition to the churches mentioned above, participants related to the Lutheran and Reformed tradition were invited. Representatives of the Methodist, Baptist and Roman Catholic churches were also present. This broadened framework was conducive to the discussion and to the outcome of the meeting. The leading question was whether we can arrive at a more comprehensive and inclusive understanding of the Reformation. In what way can the new insights renew our churches and enrich the ecumenical discussion today? This is a summary of the papers presented: Carter Lindberg asserted that Luther's reform movement is theologically discontinuous from the continuum of medieval renewal movements that lead into and continue in the "Radical Reformation". Luther's reformation differed in kind rather than in degree from those reform movements which preceded him. Carter Lindberg rested this claim for distinguishing Luther's endeavours on his doctrine of justification by grace through faith alone. Does not this emphasis on doctrine over life lead to quietism? This doctrine led to renewed community worship and a new social ethic exemplified in social welfare legislation. Responses to this paper were given by Walter Sawatsky (Mennonite) and Renate Ellwanger (Hutterian Brethren).

Hutterian Sermons and Vorreden (Introductory Sermons), 18 th th Century
6 Boxes (Large) Scope and Content This collection, donated by Paul S. Gross and the Spokane Hutterite colony, contains hundreds of Hutterian sermons and vorreden originating in the 18 th and 19 th centuries. As the Hutterites moved from Moravia, through Slovakia, Hungary, and the Ukraine, and finally to the United States and Canada, these sermons continued to be used in worship. The sermons collected here were copied from the originals by various transcribers, a process beginning in the 1890s and continuing at least into the 1980s. Administrative Information These copies were gathered by Paul S. Gross and presented to the Mennonite archives as research materials. They remain in their original German form. Of particular note is the work of Elias Walter from Standoff Colony, Alberta, whose copies (1898-1917) occupy the second half of this collection. Included are various Hutterite related writings and pamphlets, including works written by Paul S. Gross and Robert Friedmann. Sermons are not to be duplicated, except with permission of the Spokane Hutterite Colony. Send requests attention to Philip Gross, Box 6-E, Route 1, Reardan, WA 99029. Telephone: (509 / 299-5400).

Krisztinkovich inherited an interest in Anabaptist-Hutterite writings and artifacts from her father, Bela Krisztinkovich, a noted collector and ethnographer from Budapest, Hungary. During more than three decades, Maria Krisztinkovich collected and organized references to Anabaptist-Hutterite materials. Her work as librarian at the University of British Columbia facilitated this task. Eventually her contact with professor Werner Packull led to the conversion of her massive Hutterite bibliography into a computer data base, a task overseen by professor Peter C. Erb of Wilfrid Laurier University. The resulting bibliography is a researcher's goldmine. Included in the more than 2,600 individual entries are many extremely rare items located in eastern European archives. In 1996 prof. Packull took the manuscript with him on his sabbatical leave to Europe. During this time, the eastern European entries were checked and corrected by Rev. Oliver E. Szebeni of Hungary. The usefulness of the bibliography is enhanced by English annotations, so that readers not conversant in eastern European languages can still benefit from all entries.
