Hutterian Brethren [h u t E E u n] Pronunciation Key Hutterian Brethren , a body of Christians practicing strict communism based on religious principles. The Brethren are descendants of those Moravian Anabaptists who were followers of Jacob Hutter, a minister from the Tyrol who was burned at the stake in 1536. In the 17th cent. there were a number of Hutterian brotherhoods in Moravia. Persecution drove them eastward to eventual settlement in Russia. In 1874, in company with Russian Mennonites, a group emigrated to the United States, settling near Tabor, S.Dak. Other groups followed. Their doctrines and principles, aside from their practice of common ownership, are in accord with those of Mennonites in general. There are around 400 Hutterite colonies in the United States and Canada today. They are also known as Hutterische Brethren or Hutterites. See studies by V. Peters (1965), J. W. Bennett (1967), and J. A. Hostelter (1975). The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia,

The Hutterian Brethren practice community of goods , as first established in Moravia in 1529 and re-established by Jakob Hutter in 1533 according to the example of the first church in Jerusalem (Acts 2:44), "And all that believed were together, and had all things in common." The basic beliefs and way of life, including community of goods, are the same today as when the movement began. In 1990 there were about 353 Hutterite colonies with a population of more than 35,000. They were situated in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Washington, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, England, and Japan. The Hutterians in Japan began as a small group of Japanese Christians in 1969. They had all things in common and in a worldwide search for other groups living according to the gospel and Acts 2 and 4, their leader, Izeki, visited the Hutterian Brethren. He was baptized at Wilson Siding Bruderhof in 1975 and confirmed as Servant of the Word two years later. The Hutterians who fled to the United States from Russia in the 1870s and moved to Canada after World War I because of hostility and mistreatment on account of their conscientious objection against military participation, encountered fresh discrimination following the outbreak of World War II and in subsequent years. The Hutterians refused to join any branch of the military forces, but accepted alternative service under civilian jurisdiction.

Nonconformity (1989)
Nonconformity to the world is the historic Christian emphasis on Godly living and being in secular and often pagan society. Many Christian groups in the history of the church have stressed total obedience to the teachings and example of Jesus Christ, some to the point of complete perfection. The Anabaptists of the 16th century took this divine calling with unusual seriousness and many of their descendants among the Mennonites, Amish , and Hutterian Brethren still do in late 20th century. Theory and practice, however, have never been easily held together. The relevant biblical texts and secondary literature to the mid-1950s are cited in the "Nonconformity (1956)" article. A key volume in that literature is J. C. Wenger's Separated unto God (1951) which also included major bibliographical listings with each chapter. Yet the book marked the end of an era for Mennonites and Brethren in Christ. A generation of Mennonites came on the scene after World War II with new experiences in Civilian Public Service, global Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) involvements and more college graduates in an increasingly urbanized society. The civil rights movement of the 1960s and the peace marches of the early 1970s gave many young Mennonites causes in which they could legitimately participate both as believers and as citizens. A new social respectability seemed to have been achieved. These kinds of developments, in turn, led to new questions, new ideas and a new image of themselves as Mennonites and their place in society. Mennonite Mutual Aid was born. It became a symbol of fresh involvements as a church in such businesses as insurance and investments. A new level of prosperity was being achieved by Mennonites in rapidly urbanizing societies in North America and Europe. Mission outreach expanded rapidly. The Amish, Hutterian Brethren, and Old Colony Mennonites were obviously also aware of change, but not to the degree of the new generation of Mennonites.

The Hutterian Brethren, or Hutterites, are a group of Christians that traces its origin to the 16th century Anabaptists of central Europe. Like other Anabaptists, Hutterites reject state churches, practice adult baptism, and are pacifists. Under the guidance of their founder, the Tyrolean Jacob Hutter (d. 1536), they also adopted common ownership of property.
The Hutterian Brethren are a communitarian religious sect that originated among Anabaptists in Moravia (now the Czech Republic) during the Reformation and is now located chiefly in South Dakota, Manitoba, and Alberta. Also known as Hutterites, they took their name from their original leader, Jakob Hutter, who was burned as a heretic in 1536. Throughout most of their history, the Hutterites have formed agricultural colonies, called Bruderhöfe. Their way of life is rural and conservative. On the basis of the New Testament, they are pacifists and shun political participation. As a result, they have often been subject to social pressure and persecution. Over a period of centuries in Europe they sought to escape persecution by moving eastward, finally reaching Russia, before migrating (1874-79) to the northern United States, from which they spread to Canada. They now number more than 20,000; their inward-looking sectarianism continues to elicit some hostility from their neighbors.
Although the Hutterian Brethren were peaceful citizens and excellent farmers, they suffered intermittent but severe persecution. Hutter led his followers from the Tyrol to Moravia. Although he himself was executed, his followers were generally tolerated there until the early 17th century. Then they fled eastward, eventually to the Ukraine. In the 1870s they emigrated to the United States and settled in South Dakota; during World War I many moved to Canada. Numbering about 20,000 adherents today, they maintain their traditional piety and insularity, their pacifism, their agricultural diligence, and their hostility to modern culture. They still speak German in their communities, which are scattered throughout the Dakotas and Montana in the United States, and in Alberta and Manitoba in Canada.

Hutterian Brethren fined for illegally using water
SPOKANE - The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) has fined the Marlin Hutterian Brethren $34,300 for irrigating 125 acres of land for which the group has no water right and for failing to install a required water-measuring device. The illegal irrigation took place for 200 days during the 1999 irrigation season and 77 days this spring. On May 4, Ecology issued a cease-and-desist order, requiring that the group stop irrigating the unauthorized land. In addition, the Hutterians were required to install a water-measuring device (flow meter) within 30 days so they could report their volume of water use to Ecology. Peter Gross, representing the Hutterians, filed an appeal of the cease-and-desist order to the state's Pollution Control Hearings Board. However, according to field investigators, the irrigation continued, in violation of the order, and the flow meter was installed but was not in working condition. The Marlin Hutterian farm is located within the "Odessa sub-area," one of only three specially designated sub-areas in the state. The ground water in the Odessa sub-area is managed more closely because of documented declines in the water tables. The other two sub-areas in Washington are the Quincy sub-area and the smaller Duck Lake sub-area in Okanogan County.

Hutterian Brethren and land owner fined $40,200 for illegal irrigation
SPOKANE - The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) has fined the Stahl Hutterian Brethren and a man who leases land to the Brethren a total of $40,200 for illegally using water in what's called the "Odessa sub-area"-a region in Central Washington with severe water availability problems. Ecology fined the Stahl Hutterian Brethren $27,000, while fining Gordon Gering of Ritzville $13,200. Gering owns approximately 65 acres of the 175 acres the Hutterians were irrigating without a water right this spring and summer. The property is located 21 miles east of Moses Lake adjacent to I-90. In May, the farm was ordered by Ecology to stop irrigating the land and to install a water-measuring device (flow meter) and report to Ecology the volume of water being used. The Hutterians filed an appeal of the cease-and-desist order to the state's Pollution Control Hearings Board. However, according to field investigators, the irrigation continued, in violation of the order, and a flow meter was not installed. The Stahl Hutterian farm is located in Adams County within the "Odessa sub-area," one of only three specially designated sub-areas in the state. The ground water in the Odessa sub-area is managed more closely because of documented declines in the water tables. The other two sub-areas in Washington are the Quincy sub-area and the smaller Duck Lake sub-area in Okanogan County.
