Secular Humanistic Judaism
The origins of a small Jewish movement that embraces a cultural identity while rejecting a belief in God
By Barry Cohen
Small but controversial, the Society for Humanistic Judaism maintains temples and ordains rabbis despite not believing in God. In the following article, reprinted with permission from the Jewish News of Greater Phoenix , the founder of the movement explains its origins and motives. Much like flavors of ice cream used to limited to those found in Neapolitan ice creamchocolate, vanilla and strawberryJewish expression used to be limited to "Neapolitan Judaism"Reform, Conservative, or Orthodox, explains Rabbi Sherwin Wine.
"There wasn't what I would call a pluralistic perspective," he says. "Today, there is a sense that if the Jewish community is going to survive, it has to deal with all the diversity within the community." Humanistic Judaism is part of this diversity, he notes. Wine founded the first Humanistic Jewish congregation in 1963 "Being Jewish is primarily and fundamentally an ethnic, cultural identity, not a theological or philosophical one," explains Wine. For this reason, a Jew is not required to believe in God, he notes.

Why we have found a home in Humanistic Judaism
San Diego Jewish Press-Heritage, Aug. 10, 2001 By Sher Slavin San Diego, CA (special) My husband and I are both Jewish, though not religious. My husband was forced to go through Hebrew school, and Bar Mitzvah, but never felt connected to his roots. He vowed never to put his children through the same ordeal. We believe in God, but not necessarily in prayer. We want our children to feel connected to their Jewish culture, and be a part of the Jewish community. How can we do this, if we don't conform to the endless hours of Hebrew training forced upon us by all the congregations in town? We are American Jews. We do not think, nor speak Hebrew. Learning Hebrew in order to say the prayers means nothing unless you actually speak the language. Fighting with children to go the Hebrew school every Sunday morning is not getting any of us anywhere. They only end up resenting being forced to go.
Where does that leave those of us that won't comply? How can my sons experience the rite of passage, the Bar Mitzvah, without the rigorous Hebrew training? Children in Israel learn about God, prayer, and rich Jewish history in their own language! This is very different. I understand why it might be necessary to expose all Jewish children to a little Hebrew, but the extent should be limited, and moving forward, optional.

San Diego, CA (special) Welcoming nontheistic or humanistic Jews to its fold would strengthen rather than weaken the organized Jewish community, according to Bert Steinberg, president of the National Society for Humanistic Judaism. People who have doubts about the existence of God would know they still have a home among the Jewish people and would not need to look for homes elsewhere, Steinberg told HERITAGE during an interview Aug 21 at the offices of the San Diego Humanistic Jewish Congregation. Steinberg, a resident of Lafayette, CA, had been in San Diego in partial fulfillment of his pledge to visit each of the 33 Humanistic Jewish congregations in North America. Additionally, the retirement New York City insurance executive was here to confer with Toby Dorfman, the madrikha (leader) of the San Diego congregation, who will succeed him as president of the national organization. Rabbi Sherwin Wine who had been ordained in the Reform movement founded Humanistic Judaism in 1963 by as a vehicle for people who do not believe in God, but who identify themselves as Jews. In an emotional presentation, Steinberg said he wished

Secular Humanistic Christianity may be defunct in California according to
a colleague on the list, however the movement is not confined to
Christianity but is alive and well in the Jewish faith. The movement
attributed to Rabbi Wine in Detroit Michigan in the 1950's exists in
Israel as well, its main emphasis being that Secular Humanistic Judaism is
Man/Human centered, rather than centered around a diety. In fact the
symbol of the movement is a traditional Jewish menora, the only
difference being is that in the center a human being stands with his/her

I am working with (and am a member of) a Secular Jewish community in the
United States. They have developed secular Bar and Bas (Bat) Mitzvas. And
the previous sentence is how they pluralize them, because B'nai Mitzva is a
masculine plural. It is impossible to have a gender-free plural without
    resorting to English.

About Humanistic Judaism What Is Secular Humanistic Judaism?
by Myrna Cohn, a founding member of Kol Hadash Secular Humanistic Judaism is one of the five major branches or movements within Judaism, along with Orthodox, Conservative, Reconstructionist and Reform Judaism. As in all other branches, the members of the Secular Humanistic Jewish Movement:
  • Identify as or call themselves Jewish Belong to the ethno-historic entity called "The Jewish People" (Klal Yisrael) Congregate as communities to affirm their beliefs and celebrate their Jewishness Study and interpret Jewish history, philosophy and traditions, and Endeavor to perpetuate Jewishness in future generations
  • Although all Jews have common roots and share many beliefs and practices, there are both minor and major differences between theistically centered movements and Secular Humanistic Judaism, which is human centered. But there are also differences within our own movement., In a movement such as Secular Humanistic Judaism, which considers equal rights and human dignity for all fundamental, where pluralism and tolerance are valued, where skepticism, debate and creativity are encouraged, and where balancing individuality and community is considered vital, there cannot be a single definition for Secular Humanistic Judaism or one right way to believe or behave. However, I believe that there are parameters within which all who identify with Secular Humanistic Judaism belong. The information contained in this article does not necessarily represent the philosophy of Kol Hadash nor the writer, but is a summary of the research findings presented in "Basic Ideas of Secular Humanistic Judaism" written and compiled by Eva Goldfinger, Madrikha, and published by the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism, North American Section, 1996.

Bulletin Staff Founded in the Bay Area a decade ago on the principle that God should be left out of Judaism, a group of secular Jews has opened its first center of operations. The Northern California chapter of the Society for Humanistic Judaism now calls home a building at 412 Monte Vista Ave. in Oakland. It subleases the space an office and a time-share of meeting rooms from Jewish Community Services of Oakland and Piedmont. First organized in Detroit 35 years ago, the Humanistic group has its followers celebrate most Jewish holidays, observe Shabbat and read the Torah. The group's members send their children to Sunday school and some even believe in God, said chapter president Jutta Organek. But, she explains, "God is a personal choice. We first of all believe that every human is responsible for their own actions and fate." So, why observe any kind of Judaism?

Humanistic rabbi coming here with tips on staying sane
ALEZA GOLDSMITH Bulletin Staff Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine cites three typical reactions to his stream of Judaism, the Humanistic movement. First, there are those who support the movement he founded. "They are sympathetic with what we teach because their point of view is so close," said Wine. Then there are those with mixed feelings. "They don't agree with us, but they think we're useful because we reach out to Jews who would otherwise be lost." And finally there are those "who are just plain hostile." But Wine does not flinch at the last category. Since introducing the movement 37 years ago a stream of Judaism that doesn't acknowledge the existence or non-existence of God he has learned how to handle hostility. "It's all part of being part of a pioneering movement," said the confident Wine, speaking by phone from Detroit. "Besides," he added, "even from the very beginning, I have found many people enthusiastic about my message." Wine will speak about the movement and his new book, "Staying Sane in a Crazy World," during two forums in the East Bay this weekend.
