identity and who seek an alternative to conventional Judaism.
Humanistic Judaism affirms the right of individuals to shape their
own lives independent of supernatural authority. WHAT WE ARE We are a community of people who have joined together to celebrate our Jewish cultural identity and affirm the essential ethical values in Judaism in accordance with our humanistic philosophical principles, which regard human beings as the determing force in our lives, responsible for our own
actions, and concerned with welfare of one another. As an affiliate of the Society for Humanistic Judaism, we are part of a worldwide movement for secular and Humanistic Judaism that comprises more than fifty communities in the United States as well as groups in Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Britain, France, Belgium,
Russia, Israel, and Australia and includes tens of thousands of members.
WHAT WE DO We study the history of the Jewish people and the variant forms of their practice of Judaism in order to determine for ourselves how we wish to observe and celebrate the calendar of holidays and life cycle events in ways consistent with our rationalist orientation and our belief in such universal values as freedom, peace, integrity, dignity, creativity, and happiness. We then develop appropriate rituals for our celebrations. In addition, we have informative programs on historical or contemporary cultural, social, or political issues of interest to the members, generally with a Jewish and/or humanistic aspect or connection. Our board of directors meets monthly to determine policy and coordinate the work of the program committee and the ritual and education study groups. All such meetings are open to the entire membership, and the holiday celebrations and topical programs generally are open to the public.

Secular Humanistic Judaism is not Judaism "lite," or a less demanding version of Reform Judaism. It is a bold statement by those Jews who clearly articulate a belief in the power of humanity and in Jewish identity. - Adam Chalom, SHJ Rabbi
We in Adat Chaverim are Humanistic Jews. Humanistic Judaism offers secular Jews a non-theistic philosophy of life that integrates the value of Jewish identity with a belief in the importance of human reason and human power. It declares that reason, rather than faith, is the source of truth, and that human intelligence and experience are capable of guiding our lives. And it offers an opportunity to practice Judaism in ways that are consistent with our humanistic outlook. Humanistic Jews understand Judaism — with its culture, civilization, ethical values — as a

Humanistic Judaism doesn't proclaim that there is no God, but it does do without God. It sees no evidence for the existence of a supernatural being. Most Humanistic Jews regard the question of God's existence as either meaningless, or irrelevant. It finds no meaning in the worship of God, whether or not God exists. So Humanistic Jews do not pray or refer to God or the supernatural, or use worshipful or prayer-like language. It gives no moral authority to God. The symbol of Humanistic Judaism combines a human being with the ceremonial Jewish candlestand or menorah, to powerful symbolic effect. Basic Principles Humanistic Judaism is nontheistic and based on two principles:
  • Judaism is more than a religion, it is the culture of the Jewish people. The source of power for solving human problems lies within human beings.
So Humanistic Jews regard Judaism as an ethnic culture that was created by the Jewish people and shaped by Jewish experience.

Humanistic Judaism Reading List Introduction
"Humanistic Jews need a literature that clearly and boldly states what they think and believe" [Win85] This message is intended to provide readers of soc.culture.jewish with a list of references to allow them to learn more about the current practices, past practices, beliefs, and history of the Humanistic Judaism Movement. Humanistic Judaism is less well known than Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform. But, on a behavioral level, it claims to represent many more American Jews than any of these official ideologies. Rabbi Sherwin Wine, the founder of the movement, identifies three kinds of Jews who are neither honestly Orthodox, Conservative, or Reform. He calls these types the involuntary, the ethnic, and the humanistic. Rabbi Wine defines the involuntary Jew is the individual of Jewish descent who finds no meaning either in his past or in the unique practices of his ancestral religion. He defines the ethnic Jew is the person of Jewish descent who bears a strong attachment to the Hebrew and Yiddish cultures out of which he emerged. Rabbi Wine feels that these affiliations are negative. He prefers the positive definition of Humanistic Jew:

Tools to aid this process include poetic devices such as rhyme and alliteration. The stories thus preserved are also referred to as tradition, or as part of an oral tradition. What is Humanistic Judaism? Humanistic Judaism is a nontheistic alternative in contemporary Jewish life. The movement was established by Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine in 1963. Humanist Jews affirm that:
    • Human beings possess the power and responsibility to shape their own lives independent of supernatural authority. In other words, not all Humanistic Jews believe in a God: Your own beliefs are up to you. A Jew is a person who identifies with the history, culture, and future of the Jewish people. Judaism is the historic culture of the Jewish people. Jewish history is a human saga, a testament to the significance of human power and human responsibility. Jewish identity is best preserved in a free, pluralistic environment. The freedom and dignity of the Jewish people must go hand in hand with the freedom and dignity of every human being.
Humanist Jews have a strong family and community bond. There's a lot more to Humanistic Judaism, of course. We would be happy to answer any questions you have about Beth Chai . You can reach us at 301-229-7400 or drop us an email Back to Beth Chai's main page
