Humanistic Judaism affirms the right of individuals to shape their own lives independent of supernatural authority. WHAT WE ARE We are a community of people who have joined together to celebrate our Jewish cultural identity and affirm the essential ethical values in Judaism in accordance with our humanistic philosophical principles, which regard human beings as the determing force in our lives, responsible for our own actions, and concerned with welfare of one another. As an affiliate of the Society for Humanistic Judaism, we are part of a worldwide movement for secular and Humanistic Judaism that comprises more than fifty communities in the United States as well as groups in Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Britain, France, Belgium, Russia, Israel, and Australia and includes tens of thousands of members. WHAT WE DO We study the history of the Jewish people and the variant forms of their practice of Judaism in order to determine for ourselves how we wish to observe and celebrate the calendar of holidays and life cycle events in ways consistent with our rationalist orientation and our belief in such universal values as freedom, peace, integrity, dignity, creativity, and happiness. We then develop appropriate rituals for our celebrations. In addition, we have informative programs on historical or contemporary cultural, social, or political issues of interest to the members, generally with a Jewish and/or humanistic aspect or connection. Our board of directors meets monthly to determine policy and coordinate the work of the program committee and the ritual and education study groups. All such meetings are open to the entire membership, and the holiday celebrations and topical programs generally are open to the public.
