It is clear that from 1300 b.c.e up to 300 b.c.e , the history of Akhnaton was deliberatly omitted from all historical records of Egypt. During this millenium Egypt's power constantly declined, while Israel appeared and became a moderately powerful nation in the Middle East. At the same time Athens surged in Greece and grew toward great power. At its zenith, Athens crumbled (Socrates), but continued in importance with Alexander who established a Greek dynasty (Ptolemean) in Egypt. From that moment ( 300 b.c.e ), Egyptian historians started to revealed that Moses, the prophet of their Israeli neighbours, had been a Pharaoh (depicted with the features that we now know as Akhnaton's). Meanwhile Hermopolis Magna (the City of Hermes, the Messenger) was built across the Nile from the remains of the Akhnaton's old city (named Akhtaton, Adocentyn or Tell El Amarna). In 30 b.c.e , the last of the Ptolemeans, Cleopatra, was defeated by the Romans who, since 300 b.c.e, had grown powerfull and fought the Greco-Egyptian power for domination of the Eastern Mediterranean. The library of Alexandria was destroyed, and the evidences of the cultural influence of Egypt over the Middle-East debased. At this j unc ture the young Jesus of Nazareth , after residing in Egypt, taught in Israel. He then explained through the 'Transfiguration Play' his goal of removing the veil laid on Moses identity to the people of Isreal. Yet his message eventually spread among the gentiles, and at the biginning of Christianity, the Fathers of the Chuch celebrated the Monotheist Egyptian King whom they called

Studies in Hermeticism
The Peacock has moved! Watch for the new Cauda Pavonis Web site coming in 2003!
Beginning in the Spring of 2003, Cauda Pavonis: Studies in Hermeticism will be published twice annually at The University of Texas at Austin. Entering its twenty-first year, the journal publishes scholarly material on all aspects of hermeticism and alchemy, including their influence on and intersections with literature, history, philosophy, art, music, religion, science, and medicine. Cauda Pavonis by necessity endorses a multidisciplinary approach not limited to any particular historical period, national emphasis, critical bias, or methodology. The journal publishes articles, book reviews, research notes, and announcements, as well as its Annual Bibliography of Hermetic Studies each Spring. In the Fall of 2003, Cauda Pavonis will launch its first Fall online edition. (Spring issues, including the Annual Bibliography, will continue to be published in the traditional print format.) For our online debut, we will be seeking in particular articles which take advantage of hypertext and multimedia formats. Watch for announcements, specific CFP's, and further updates appearing early in 2003 at this address: http://caudapavonis.la.utexas.edu.

Freemasonry and the Hermetic Tradition R.A. Gilbert GNOSIS #6 If, as is stated categorically by the United Grand Lodge of England , Freemasonry "is not a Secret Society" and is "not a religion or a substitute for religion," then what is it? And why should students of the occult be concerned with the history, symbolism and rituals of this "peculiar system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols," which is defined officially as, "one of the world's oldest secular fraternal societies . . . a society of men concerned with spiritual values. Its members are taught its precepts by a series of ritual dramas, which follow ancient forms and use stonemasons' customs and tools as allegorical guides. The essential qualification for admission and continuing membership is a belief in a Supreme Being. Membership is open to men of any race or religion who can fulfill this essential qualification and are of good repute"? Perhaps the occultist, who sees in freemasonry the survival of ancient, pagan mystery religions, sees something that, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, for what he sees is clearly invisible both to the governing body of the Craft and to the bulk of its members. Freemasonry does have a traditional history (around which its rituals are constructed) that places its origin at the time of the building of King Solomon's Temple, but in the material world we can trace its history from 1717 A.D. when the first Grand Lodge in the world - the Grand Lodge of England - was founded at London. From that time on Freemasonry has expanded, undergoing many vicissitudes along the way - schisms, reconciliations, quarrels over jurisdiction and quarrels over essential beliefs until today it is firmly established in most countries of the world (the exceptions being countries of the Communist bloc, and those countries that suffer under Islamic fundamentalism).

CHAPTER VIII
THE NEW BIRTH EXPERIENCE IN HERMETICISM
Of the earlier phases of this important religio-philosophical development there are few literary remains. The considerable Neo-Pythagorean literature has perished and the teachings of Ammonius Saccas, the founder of Neo-Platonism, were oral and esoteric. But there yet remains from these centuries the so-called Hermetic literature, writings in Greek and Latin attributed to Hermes Trismegistus and composed of ethical, religious, and philosophic instruction. Obviously, these writings are the remnants of what must have been a far more extensive body of religious literature. Even in the decimated state in which we know them, they give unmistakable evidence of having been produced at different times and in different communities during the early imperial period. As the scattered and scanty memoranda of a distinctive and more or less widespread religious quest in the Graeco-Roman world, these enigmatic writings are extremely interesting and valuable.
I
The Corpus Hermeticum proper, which is the important section of this literature, includes a collection of fourteen tractates popularly but mistakenly named "Poimandres" from the dominant first number of the series, together with three others grouped under the name of "Asclepius." These tractates comprehend a variety of literary types: dialogues, discourses, hymns, prayers, epistles, an apology, and a theophany. But with all this diversity of literary there is a certain unity about the Corpus. The writings generally profess to be revelations. On the one hand, they describe what one of the main characters, Hermes or Asclepius or Tat, has seen or learned from his divine father and teacher; on the other hand, a prophet of religion proclaims to men the revelations he has received through his experience with the deity. Viewed as a revelation literature, the Hermetic writings show more of unity than their diversity of literary form would lead one to expect.

Why Hermeticism? Why Hermeticism? The Hermetic Gnosis, known through the Corpus Hermeticum and its primary ancillae, the many texts containing instruction in the practical arts of Alchemy. Astrology and Magic, is of considerable interest in a wide variety of fieldsthe history of science, the history of ideas, the history and philosophy of religion, mathematics, chemistry and medicine, as well as chronology and calendrics, astrology, alchemy, magic, political science, semiotics and psychology. Why the Hermetic Gnosis? From the Hellenistic Period to the present day the Hermetic Gnosis has exerted a powerful and formative, although often indirect, influence on western science, society and thought. The Corpus Hermeticum 's first libellus, the Pymander , with its cosmogonic myth, its declaration of the divine origin of Man, and its eight-staged spiritual ascent has long been an important literary source for mystical initiation. Its peculiar concept of spiritual rebirth, for instance in Libellus II, The Basin

Unusual, insightful, powerful This book is obviously the product of an entire lifetime of devoted scholarship, meditation, and reflective living. It introduces the tarot not in the usual sense that we encounter it on the periphery of our lives (as a divination tool or psychic card game), but as a sequence of profound spiritual exercises. The book is organized as a series of "letters to the Unknown Friend," each letter explaining in beautiful and elegant depth the meanings surrounding each spiritual exercise. On the back cover, there is a quote by Fr. Thomas Keating (perhaps the greatest living mystic, at least as far as I know). Fr. Keating, a man of unimpeachable good judgment, is quoted in this way: he calls the book "the greatest contribution to date toward the rediscovery and renewal of Christian contemplative tradition." If he is quoted correctly, that is high praise indeed, coming from a man of such high spiritual accomplishment and great generosity of spirit. Personally, I feel great joy and honor at being addressed as "unknown friend" by the anonymous author. Surely, this author is a person I would value as a friend. He reveals something substantial about his Hermetic tradition, a tradition with which I had not been familiar. I just love the book and recommend it with considerable enthusiasm.
