25. Hermetica - A History Of The Western Esoteric Tradition
An overview of the Western Esoteric tradition with emphasis on the Golden Dawn and the main personalities involved in its creation.
http://www.kheper.net/topics/Hermeticism/index.html
Hermeticism
The Golden Dawn Rosy Cross symbol. This glyph was worn by on the breast by Golden Dawn members during ceremonies. The design is based on Rosicrucian legend, Kabbalah , and on the colour symbolism taught by S. L. MacGregor Mathers . The twenty-two petals of the Rose, each coloured differently, correspond to the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet - "three mothers, seven doubles and twelve simple" - and the twenty-two Paths of the Tree of Life. From these petals a geometrical figure representing any named spiritual force can be obtained; the name is first transliterated into Hebrew letters and then a figure is drawn which would connect up all the letters of that name if it were drawn upon the Rose. In the middle of the petals of the Rose is a Calvary Cross, symbolic of death and spiritual rebirth. The Rose itself lies upon the four-armed Cross of Nature, symbolic of the physical elements which the adept has to transmute into pure gold in the athanor of his heart. The pentagrams show the symbols of four physical elements plus the fifth or quintessence; the hexagram below the rose shows the moon and five planets, centred on the sun

Dion Fortune
a.k.a. Violet Mary Firth a.k.a. Mrs. Penry Evans
An orphan of Yorkshire descent, she was brought up in a house-
hold of Christian Scientists. To earn a living she took a post in an
institution~he does not particularise its nature nor that of her own
duties-where the principal incapacitated her (or so she believed) by
a combination of hypnotism and ill-wishing. She recounts the
incident under suitable disguise in the Preface to Psychic Selfr
Defrnce (i 930); I take it that the adept who rescued her and whom
she refers to as Z was J. W. Brodie-Innes. She probably met him in
the Theosophical circles she frequented. Having studied psychology and psych~analysis at London University, she worked as a lay-psychotherapist-that is, one with- out a medical degree-at a clinic. In 1919 she was initiated into the A .~. O.~. Lodge, a London daughter-Lodge led by Mrs. Maiya Tranchell-Hayes, of Brodie- Innes's Amen Ra in Edinburgh. Kenneth Grant identifies Vivian le

this page is still under construction.... S.L. "MacGregor" Mathers was one of the most important, and certainly the most-misunderstood, occult figures of the late nineteenth century. He was a major figure in the founding of the Order of the Golden Dawn , wrote its rituals and eventually became its head. In an interesting parallel to Mme Blavatsky , who he met prior to the founding of the Golden Dawn, he claimed to have derived many of the teachings from a group of superhuman adepts, the Secret Chiefs. He was an eccentric and brilliant scholar, unemployed and unemployable, the ideal person to be head of a magical order. His magical names were Deo Duce Comite Ferro ("With God as My Leader and the Sword as My Companion") and ' S Rioghail Mo Dhream (Gaelic for "Royal is My Race"), which reflect his authoritarian, military and Jacobite inclinations. At the same time he was also a vegetarian, probably a vegan , and an anti-vivisectonist. He campaigned for women's rights. He married

    Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956)
The Encyclopeadia of the Unexplained , Routledge and Kegan Paul, p.226 Often considered the grandfather of Chaos Magick, Austin Spare was born on December 30th 1886 at Snowhill, London, the son of a City of London policeman. When he left school, at the age of thirteen, he served an apprenticeship in a stained-glass factory, and in the evenings attended the Lambeth School of Art, South London. This enabled him to obtain a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, Kensington, where he began to study in earnest.. Even at this young age, he was astonishingly talented. One of his drawings was surreptitiously sent by his father to the Royal Academy, where it was accepted and exhibited. His pictures were imemdiately popular in the Art world. The painter John Singer Sargent hailed Spare a genius, and G. F. Watts declared that Spare had 'already done enough to justify his fame'. Spare did not get on with his mother, and at an early age he formed a close friendship with a strange old lady who claimed to be a witch. Spare knew her simply as Mrs Paterson, and he described her as his second mother or, more appositely, as his witch-mother. She claimed to be descended from a line of Salem witches. She taught Spare not only how to visualize and reify dream imagery, but also how to evoke spirits and elementals to visible appearance. Although Spare could, and often did, produce conventional works of art of great genuis, he preferred to used his artistic talents to represent occult and spirit beings. His work has been compared with that of Aubrey Beardsley (a member of the

They were not well off and Waite was educated first at small private schools in North London and then, from the age of thirteen, at St. Charles's College. When he left school to become a clerk he wrote verse in his spare time; the death of his sister soon afterwards attracted him into psychical research. At twenty-one he began to read regularly in the Library of the British Museum, studying many branches of esotericism. When almost thirty he married Ada Lakeman ('Lucasta') and they had one daughter; some time after 'Lucasta's' death in 1924 he married Mary Broadbent Schofield ( Una Salus ). He spent all his life in or near London, being connected with various publishing houses. He edited a small magazine, The Unknown World , but became more and more engrossed in his particular kind of authorship and the research it entailed.

    The Shorter Answer

    Hermeticism:
Considers humanity to be on a spiritual journey to return to a state of unity with the Divine; this is the Great Work of humankind. Holds that if we would attain to the Divine, we must aspire to the Divine; spiritual growth cannot be achieved without human effort Is eclectic and draws material from sources spanning the entire Western Esoteric Tradition Is polytheistic, yet ultimately monotheisitic ( i.e., posits a multiplicity of Manifestations of the Divine Which emanate from an ultimate Divine Unity) Holds that the Divine is both immanent and transcendent Holds that the Universe is Divine and basically good Teaches that when we seek the Divine, we may best begin with the Mysteries of Nature Encourages spiritual curiosity Understands that human beings can access the Subtle Realms through technique and aspiration; to this end, it embraces theurgy, meditation, ritual, and other spiritual and magical practices Urges those who seek the Divine to also seek balance in embracing all things Is a poetic rather than an ascetic worldview

    The Historical Background of Hermeticism
Hermeticism takes its name from the God Hermes Trismegistos or Thrice-Greatest Hermes. Trismegistos, in turn, was so-called because of His identification with the great Egyptian God of Wisdom and Magic, Thoth.

stay tuned...! The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was a complex body of teaching and ritual magical practice brought together Kabbalistic cosmology , the Rosicrucian initiation system, ritual magic, Egyptology astrology , tarot, and various other such magical and occult streams. Under the twin genuises of its founders S. L. "MacGregor" Mathers (1854-1918) and William Wynn Westcott (1848- 1925), these were woven into a single all-embracing metaphysical and practical system. Mathers and Wescott did such a good job that the influence of the Golden Dawn is still felt today; indeed, together with Blavatsky 's Theosophy , the Golden Dawn was one of the parents of the contemporary Western esotericism The Golden Dawn organisation itself never had many members, although those that it did were often important figures, for example the Irish poet

Under the guidance of your own personal Higher Genius, you will learn the reason you are here, alive and in the flesh. This is your own True Will, and in the Hermetic tradition this development is called the “Great Work”.
