Hermes and Hermeticism Throughout the Ages
by Stephan A. Hoeller
There are few names to which more diverse persons and disciplines lay claim than the term "Hermetic." Alchemists ancient and contemporary apply the adjective "Hermetic" to their art, while magicians attach the name to their ceremonies of evocation and invocation. Followers of Meister Eckhart, Raymond Lull, Paracelsus, Jacob Boehme, and most recently Valentin Tomberg are joined by academic scholars of esoterica, all of whom attach the word "Hermetic" to their activities. Who, then, was Hermes, and what may be said of the philosophy or religion that is connected with him? The early twentieth-century scholar Walter Scott, in his classic edition of the Hermetic texts, writes of a legend preserved by the Renaissance writer Vergicius: demiurgus and genetor Until relatively recently, no one had a clear picture of either the authorship or the context of the mysterious writings ascribed to Hermes. Descriptions such as the one above are really no more than a summary of the ideal laid down in the "Hermetic" writings. The early Christian Fathers, in time, mostly held that Hermes was a great sage who lived before Moses and that he was a pious and wise man who received revelations from God that were later fully explained by Christianity. None mentioned that he was a Greek god.

Joseph Caezza
The greatest alchemical adepts, Artephius, Nicholas Flamel, Salomon Trismosen, Michael Maier, Philalethes, Dom Pernety and Fulcanelli among many others have spoken at once with pornographic explicitness and again with exasperating obliqueness about the bench-top laboratory manipulations revealed in the circumstances of Jason's voyage. Joscelyn Godwin in his brilliant forward to Antoine Faivre's contemporary survey, The Golden Fleece and Alchemy remarks that C. G. Jung anchors Jason's argo along with the Hermetic great work solely to the psychic level of personality integration while ignoring how, why, what and with what, adepts actually do in their laboratories. Faivre too, pays gross negligence to this central aspect of the royal art which concerns itself with a combination of prayer, study and working hands-on directly with matter. "ORA, LEGE, LEGE, LEGE, RELEGE, LABORA ET INVENIES", declares the motto of the Mutus Liber of 1677, "Pray, Read, Read, Read, Read Again and You Shall Find".

Considers humanity to be on a spiritual journey to return to a state of unity with the Divine; this is the Great Work of humankind. Holds that if we would attain to the Divine, we must aspire to the Divine; spiritual growth cannot be achieved without human effort

What is Hermeticism?
Hermeticism is a path of magic which has evolved from a diverse blending of influences during two key periods. The first period was during the Rennaissance, when Christians of a mystical bent combined newly unearthed Greek, Hebrew and Arabic mysticism with native Alchemy, Freemasonry, and heretical Christian Theurgy and Thaumaturgy. The second period was during the Victorian era, when colonization of orient brought back a variety of meditational techniques (including Tantra) which were combined with the previously mentioned influences and both Spiritism and Theosophy. Arising from the muddle of secret organizations was the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a pseudo-masonic organization which claimed to be descended from the Rosicrucians. This organization harbored a good number of English aristocrats as members, as well as theologians, poets, and people still known primarily for their occult work. One such person was Aleister Crowley, who left the Order angrily and began work with Ordo Templi Orientis. Claiming to descend from the Knights Templar, this organization was largely centered in Germany and was focused primarily on Tantra (sexually induced trances.) Crowley added his own ideas to the mix, including his "Book of the Law", a kind of Holy Bible to the religion he founded called Thelema. During roughly the same period, Crowley's students and contemporaries added an immense amount of public literature to Hermeticism; largely because the Hermetic Orders were splintering into factions. New organizations devised new material in a flurry of inspiration, and individuals published the previously secret papers of dying Orders for the sake of posterity. During this period came forth individuals like Austin Osman Spare and Kenneth Grant, whose ideas on Hermetica go off into controversial directions (and border on, or are an early form of

Defining Hermeticism
Defining Hermeticism is not easy. It is a little like trying to define religion, or art. One could say that Hermeticism is the Wisdom Tradition of the West, an esoteric tradition not necessarily limited to any one religion or mystical path, and that embraces both the theoretical and the practical. The following are two overlapping yet quite different approaches to and definitions of Hermeticism; the magickal/occult and the academic. Of course, Hermeticism is not necessarily limited to these definitions.
Hermeticism: a magickal/occult definition
The diagram above is modified from a diagram on a Hermetic Fellowship page - The Opening of the Ways to the Hermetic Temple . The various circles represent the variety of spiritual Paths in the Western Esoteric Tradition. Clockwise from the top you have Theurgy, Qabalah , Rosicrucianism, Gnosticism , Grail Quest, Alchemy , Wiccan and NeoPaganism (pentagram), and the Ancient Mystery Religions (ankh).

10. End Of Europe's Middle Ages - Hermeticism
hermeticism. hermeticism was the notion of God as a magician that developed as a result of the translation of texts in the late 1400 s by Ficino in Florence.
http://www.ucalgary.ca/applied_history/tutor/endmiddle/bluedot/hermetic.html
End of Europe's Middle Ages Hermeticism There were three major components to hermeticism that were especially important to scholars in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance: alchemy, numerology and the magic of letters (cryptography and ciphers). Alchemy was the art, or science, of corporeal substance, combination and mixture. It sought to transmute base metals, such as lead, to precious metals, such as gold, by reducing a base metal to prime matter and reconstructing it into gold. A second aspect of alchemy was the quest for the recipe for the magical elixir, or "Philosopher's Stone", that was believed to be able to permeate base metals and in this way transform them into gold. To facilitate their efforts, alchemists developed many of the procedures and apparatus that is now used in modern chemical laboratories.
Letters, especially the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, were believed to have magical powers when arranged in certain combinations. The Cabbala was the mystical interpretation of the Hebraic Old Testament. Breaking the code of the Bible would, according to tradition, reveal all the secrets of the universe. Many hermeticists applied themselves to this goal and attempted to reinterpret the Bible using ciphers. The study of numbers and ratios were yet another aspect of hermetic study. Just as letters and combinations of letters were seen to have mystical powers, so too did numbers. The study of numbers made an impact upon many other areas of scientific study, such as astronomy and mathematics, as well as areas that would not be considered scientific by modern definitions, such as astrology and numerology.

the esoteric tradition(s) of the west part III
Hermetism In the Renaissance there was an occult revival and many people were interested in different cultures and philosophies. In 1439 Cosimo de Medici (1389 - 1464) founded his "Platonic Academy" in Florence (Italy) for these studies.
Then in 1460 the monk Leonardo of Pistoia ( - ) came back from his journey through Macedonia bringing a Greek handwriting which he handed over to De Medici. The scripture contained 14 tracts/treaties and De Medici was thrilled. He told his brilliant pupil Marsilio Ficino (1433 - 1499) to stop his translations of Plato to start translating the new found texts. De Medici and others believed the texts to be written by the most ancient teacher of mankind, the Egyptian wiseman Hermes Trismegistos. In the times of De Medici they were not completely sure when Hermes would have lived, either in times a long, long time ago, around the time of Moses or a few generations after Moses. This also sets the idea behind this article. Sometimes Hermeticism is regarded as the oldest esoteric tradition descending from the earliest dynasties of Egypt, at other times originated in Alexandria, the Greek city in northern Egypt somewhere around the beginning of our counting of years. Already in the fifth century BC Herodotus identified the Egyptian god Tehuti/Thoth with his own Greek Hermes. Thoth was the bringer of writing, science and culture and in Egyptian writings (such as the Rosetta Stone) called the "big and big" Thoth and in a Greek translation from 165 BC found in 1966 in Saqqara "the great and the great and the great god Hermes" (Egyptian doesn't have superlatives). This became the 'thrice greatest' and eventually in Greek 'Trismegistos' which means the same.

Contemporary with Abraham, and, if the legends be true, an instructor of that venerable sage, Hermes was, and is, the Great Central Sun of Occultism, whose rays have served to illumine the countless teachings which have been promulgated since his time. All the fundamental and basic teachings embedded in the esoteric teachings of every race may be traced back to Hermes. Even the most ancient teachings of India undoubtedly have their roots in the original Hermetic Teachings. 'O, let not the flame die out! Cherished age after age in its dark cavernin its holy temples cherished. Fed by pure ministers of lovelet not the flame die out!"

Hermeticism
The Golden Dawn Rosy Cross symbol. This glyph was worn by on the breast by Golden Dawn members during ceremonies. The design is based on Rosicrucian legend, Kabbalah , and on the colour symbolism taught by S. L. MacGregor Mathers . The twenty-two petals of the Rose, each coloured differently, correspond to the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet - "three mothers, seven doubles and twelve simple" - and the twenty-two Paths of the Tree of Life. From these petals a geometrical figure representing any named spiritual force can be obtained; the name is first transliterated into Hebrew letters and then a figure is drawn which would connect up all the letters of that name if it were drawn upon the Rose. In the middle of the petals of the Rose is a Calvary Cross, symbolic of death and spiritual rebirth. The Rose itself lies upon the four-armed Cross of Nature, symbolic of the physical elements which the adept has to transmute into pure gold in the athanor of his heart. The pentagrams show the symbols of four physical elements plus the fifth or quintessence; the hexagram below the rose shows the moon and five planets, centred on the sun
