Course Description This course offers a critical examination of "Gnosticism," an ancient religious movement whose participants ("Gnostics") claimed to have saving knowledge ("Gnosis") of the self, the divine, of all that exists. Gnosticism flourished in the ancient Mediterranean world of the second to fourth centuries C.E., but it has also appeared in several contemporary forms. Readings will focus on recent scholarship on Gnosticism and on the ancient evidence for Gnosticism, especially the writings of the Nag Hammadi library (discovered in 1945). The primary goals of the course are to develop the skills of understanding Gnostic texts and to become familiar with the varieties of Gnostic thought, especially those of "Sethianism," of Thomas traditions, and of the Valentinian school. We will also consider:
  • the forms and meanings of Gnostic mythology;

Gnosticism Gnosticism (after , the Greek word for "knowledge" or "insight") is the name given to a loosely organized religious and philosophical movement that flourished in the first and second centuries CE. The exact origin(s) of this school of thought cannot be traced, although it is possible to locate influences or sources as far back as the second and first centuries BCE, such as the early treatises of the Corpus Hermeticum , the Jewish Apocalyptic writings, and especially Platonic philosophy and the Hebrew Scriptures themselves. In spite of the diverse nature of the various Gnostic sects and teachers, certain fundamental elements serve to bind these groups together under the loose heading of "Gnosticism" or "Gnosis." Chief among these elements is a certain manner of "anti-cosmic world rejection" that has often been mistaken for mere dualism. According to the Gnostics, this world, the material cosmos, is the result of a primordial error on the part of a supra-cosmic, supremely divine being, usually called Sophia (Wisdom) or simply the Logos . This being is described as the final emanation of a divine hierarchy, called the

Gnosticism
The term "Gnosticism" is a modern one, although accurate in that it is derived from the Greek gnosis higher or spiritual or Intuitive or Divine knowledge , as opposed to episteme , which is knowledge in the more mundane sense.
Gnosis in general
Although Gnosis is usually thought of as an aspect of "religion", it in fact differs from religion or "Faith" in one extremely important respect. With Religion , knowledge of higher things is not realised intuitively, but rather enforced as a body of knowledge - a dogma or revelation - imposed from without, e.g. Bible, Koran, Gita, etc. In the more extreme forms of religion, the so-called "fundamentalist" tendency, the believer is expected to accept this revelation without question. With Gnosis, one may indeed be inspired or stimulated by external teachings and revelations, but the essential knowledge comes from within. What this means basically is that there are as many Gnostic teachings as there are Gnostics, and vice-versa. A modern-day gnostic may be (and in fact usually is) a part of some tradition (Sufi, Kabbalistic, Tantric, Christian, etc), but he/she will always interpret that tradition in an individual way. If one could sum up the differences between "Western" materialism, religion, and Gnosticism and also "

28. THE ROOTS OF THE NEW AGE MOVEMENT - New Age In Ancient History- Gnosticism - Alc
New Age philosophy is based on ancient traditions, alchemy, gnosticism, Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry. Its roots are explored in Eastern and Western traditions.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~wichm/newage3.html
The New Age movement is hardly novel! Its philosophy is rooted in ancient traditions, often based on mystical experiences, each within a different context. Anthropologically, there have always been (wo)men within "primitive" societies who were looked upon as possessing special knowledge and power. Medicine men, or shamans, had undergone a spontaneous catharsis, or were initiated and felt called upon to maintain contact with the spirit world for the clan. When communities became more complex and organized there was little place for these loners. Society began to specialize, people realized and felt drawn to form groups, guilds, or societies, to ensure continuance and growing perfection. Contact with the spirit world was given into the hands of organized religion, which also provided an established answer to questions about the unknown and the Highest Power. People who felt endowed with special powers could hardly adapt themselves to the corset of established faith. They went underground. Yet they endeavoured to contact kindred spirits and pupils willing to follow in their footsteps to pass on the work. Esoteric tradition became handed down in spiritual groups, communes, or fraternities. Their mutual devotion resulted in a high degree of perfection comparable to the guilds of craftsmen. In their mystical experiences they beheld a spiritual reality that could hardly be reconciled with the dogmatic representation given by the churches. When passing on their experiences, they had to exercise extreme caution, lest being accused of heresy. Yet knowledgeable minds would understand their veiled writings, symbolic representations, or even gestures.

http://whatisthematrix.warnerbros.com/rl_cmp/new_phil_wakeup.html
At the beginning of The Matrix , a black-clad computer hacker known as Neo falls asleep in front of his computer. A mysterious message appears on the screen: "Wake up, Neo." This succinct phrase encapsulates the plot of the film, as Neo struggles with the problem of being imprisoned in a "material" world that is actually a computer simulation program created in the distant future by Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a means of enslaving humanity, by perpetuating ignorance in the form of an illusory perception called "the Matrix." In part, the film crafts its ultimate view of reality by alluding to numerous religious traditions that advance the idea that the fundamental problem which humanity faces is ignorance and the solution is knowledge or awakening. Two religious traditions on which the film draws heavily are Gnostic Christianity and Buddhism. Although these traditions differ in important ways, they agree in maintaining that the problem of ignorance can be solved through an individual's reorientation of perspective concerning the material realm.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Gnosticism is a blanket term for various religions and sects most prominent in the first few centuries A.D. Although many elements of second-century gnosticsm are pre-Christian, it is a well-established historical fact that Christianity and the Christian Canon accepted as the ?New Testament? predates the Gnostic movement. The name of gnosticism comes from the Greek word for knowledge, gnosis esoteric knowledge ) that only a few may possess. The occult nature of Gnostic teaching and the fact that much of the evidence for that teaching comes from attacks by orthodox Christians makes it difficult to be precise about the differences between different Gnostic systems. The word Gnosticism is also used nowadays to describe modern sects which have formed out of the New Age movement, and which do not necessarily share the main core idea of Theological dualism Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 Gnostic beliefs

We adhere to Traditional Black Magick. Rejecting the so called doctrines of Modern Satanism, prefering instead to use traditional Qlippothic names for invocation of demons. The demonic names have been carefully researched from ancient texts and sources, quoted wherever possible. This lodge exists for the furtherance of the magickal current and refuses to be associated with any other organisation which does not agree with the furtherance of true magick.
Traditional Satanism is the lodge's main focus. The study of ancient grimoires and use of Goetic evocation. Without the knowledge of evil how can we begin learn about good? The Gnostic Jesus by the Institute for Gnostic Studies Introduction To fully understand the Gnostic view of Jesus involves a radical reappraisal of how we see Christianity and Judaism. For the Gnostic, Gnosis is not the knowledge of the masses, but a secret wisdom - a comprehension only available to those who know . It is esoteric and results from a direct experience of the divine - exoteric Christianity is at best, its outer core or form, at worst, it’s corruption. The major stimulus for the rebirth of the Gnostic worldview was the discovery of the Nag Hammadi texts, these texts discovered in 1945 comprise a veritable library of esoteric wisdom, it comprised some fifty two texts in either part or whole. Their importance cannot be underplayed, for example, Elaine Pagels in the Gnostic Gospels states “ Now for the first time we have the opportunity to find out about the earliest Christian heresy, for the first time the heretics can speak for themselves”. The importance of these Gnostic texts is that they educate us regarding the teachings of the early Gnostics and from these we can re-construct what could probably be considered as “the first form of Christianity”. It seems from available evidence likely that the modern forms of Judaism and Christianity are the heresies that developed from this early Gnosis, rather than the other way around. When we begin to consider this paradigm, then the find at Nag Hammadi becomes of prime importance.

and
Rachel Wagner, The University of Iowa Abstract The Wachowski brothers' 1999 hit release The Matrix draws on multiple religious traditions to establish its complex worldview. Two of the most prominent are Gnostic Christianity and Buddhism, which, like the film, pose humanity's fundamental problem and its solution in terms of ignorance and enlightenment. Because of ignorance, people mistake the "material" world for something real, but they may "wake up" from this dream with help from a guide who teaches them their true nature. This article explores the film's pervasive allusions to Gnosticism and Buddhism, which in turn opens up the question of the film's overarching message and ultimate view of reality.

Gnosticism
There's a popular misconception that early Christianity was a unified group under the Church of Rome and the banner of Peter as "Pope Peter I". How do such misconceptions arise? We can never know for sure, but we'll just have to do with the Church of Rome's centuries of persecution and extermination of heretics, massive and efficient book-burning campaigns and an active attempt to rewrite history. In reality, there was a different version of Christianity available on every street corner through the first few centuries after the death of Jesus Christ . Among these, the Gnostics were in many ways the most radical and the most influential. Unlike its Roman competitor, Gnosticisms was by no means a monolithic and inviolable set of beliefs. The root of the word "gnostic" is the Greek term "gnosis," which means "knowledge." The Gnostics believed they were the owners of secret information about how things really are. The actual content of that information dramatically differed based on who you asked. The Gnostic tradition actually predates Christianity by at least a century. During the period just before and after the birth of Christ, Judaism had become severely fragmented, and various sects competed for popular and theological support. Much of this activity was driven by the Roman Empire's conquest of Jerusalem around 60 B.C., which sent many Jews into paroxysms of

STATEMENT DG-040-1
GNOSTICISM AND THE GNOSTIC JESUS
(Part One in a Two-Part Series on Ancient and Modern Gnosticism)
by Douglas Groothuis Popular opinion often comes from obscure sources. Many conceptions about Jesus now current and credible in New Age circles are rooted in a movement of spiritual protest which, until recently, was the concern only of the specialized scholar or the occultist. This ancient movement Gnosticism provides much of the form and color for the New Age portrait of Jesus as the illumined Illuminator: one who serves as a cosmic catalyst for others' awakening.
Many essentially Gnostic notions received wide attention through the sagacious persona of the recently deceased Joseph Campbell in the television series and best-selling book, The Power of Myth. For example, in discussing the idea that "God was in Christ," Campbell affirmed that "the basic Gnostic and Buddhist idea is that that is true of you and me as well." Jesus is an enlightened example who "realized in himself that he and what he called the Father were one, and he lived out of that knowledge of the Christhood of his nature." According to Campbell, anyone can likewise live out his or her Christ nature.
Gnosticism has come to mean just about anything. Calling someone a Gnostic can make the person either blush, beam, or fume. Whether used as an epithet for heresy or spiritual snobbery, or as a compliment for spiritual knowledge and esotericism, Gnosticism remains a cornucopia of controversy.
