The Baptist churches grew out of the Puritan revolt against the Church of England. From the beginning there were two major groups: Particular Baptists believed that Christ died to atone for the sins of an elect few, and General Baptists believed that Christ died for everyone. Religious persecution led a group of people who did not agree with the Church of England to move to Holland in 1608. There in 1609, John Smyth and 36 others formed the first official Baptist church congregation. There is no accurate record concerning the first Baptist church in the British colonies, but from the known facts, it is believed that in 1639, Roger Williams , expelled from Massachusetts for his religious views, founded the first American Baptist church at Providence, Rhode Island. The second Baptist church in New England was in Newport, R.I. In 1644, John Clarke, a minister and a physician, formed that Baptist church. The General Baptists never really took hold in the colonies, but the Particular Baptist did well, especially in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The Philadelphia Baptist Association was formed in 1707, and the Charleston Baptist Association formed in 1751. Baptists grew in numbers, especially during the

History In 1893, at the Chicago World’s Fair, William H. Jordan heard D. L. Moody speak about the importance of training Christian workers for the ministry. Deeply impressed by Moody’s vision, Jordan developed a burden to see schools established to carry on that vision. In 1921, he became pastor of Third Presbyterian Church in Omaha, Nebraska. There, the spark that D. L. Moody had ignited in Jordan produced a small, nondenominational Bible school known as the Omaha Bible Institute (OBI). Classes began in the summer of 1921 and continued for many years with Dr. Jordan as President of the school. During the mid-1940’s, the trustees wondered whether the school should continue. One of the part-time faculty members at that time was Dr. John L. Patten, pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Patten shared Dr. Jordan’s vision for the school and was firmly convinced that its need was still valid. So he volunteered to step into the place of leadership. In the mid-1950’s, the institution aggressively sought the approval and support of Baptists, changing the name to Omaha Baptist Bible Institute (OBBI). On June 22, 1956, the Council of Fourteen of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches voted to approve OBBI as an independent, fundamental Baptist educational institution. The courses were broadened and curricula expanded in the desire to establish the school on the collegiate level. To reflect this emphasis, the name was changed again in 1960 to Omaha Baptist Bible College (OBBC).

In many ways religious fundamentalism is a modern phenomenon, characterized by a sense of embattled alienation in the midst of the surrounding culture, even where the culture may be nominally influenced by the adherents' religion. The term can also refer specifically to the belief that one's religious texts are infallible and historically accurate, despite contradiction of these claims by modern scholarship.

Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org ) - The term "independent fundamental Baptist church" refers not to a denomination but to a type of church. These churches are Baptist in doctrine and polity. They are independent in relation to other churches, meaning there is no denominational or ecclesiastical headquarters which has authority over these churches; each church is autonomous under its one Head Jesus Christ. They are also fundamentalist in their stand for Bible truth, meaning they are militant in their zeal for Bible doctrine and they practice ecclesiastical separation. There are an estimated 10,000 independent Baptist churches in the United States, and these churches support approximately 6,000 missionaries. Though independent Baptists do not believe in denominational structures which influence or control the assemblies, they do believe in fellowship, and they associate and work together in various ways for the fulfillment of the Great Commission. Two loosely knit fellowships of independent Baptist preachers and churches are the Southwide Baptist Fellowship (SBF) and the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship (FBF). Southwide was formed in 1956 at a meeting held in Highland Park Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Fundamental Baptist Fellowship of America can trace its roots back to 1920, but its present form began in 1967.

association was the first baptist association in America. and to reorganize some general baptist churches to the or newlynamed regular baptist position.
http://www.secondbaptistrichmond.org/history/hxearame.htm
The History of Baptists in Early America
(This is continued from The History of Baptists in Europe General Baptists formed their first Virginia church in Prince George County in 1715 under the leadership of Robert Norden. They spread to Surry and Isle of Wight counties, but many were forced to move to North Carolina due to disease epidemics and economic problems. Other General Baptist churches were formed in northern Virginia. The Philadelphia Association was the first Baptist association in America. Formed in 1707, it was Calvinistic in belief and sent ministers to northern Virginia to organize churches and to reorganize some General Baptist churches to the Calvinistic or newly-named "Regular" Baptist position. A third Baptist group was entirely of American origin. It arose in New England among the Congregationalists. Some of these came to believe that the church should be composed of believers only. This meant they refused to engage in infant baptism. Later they began to perform baptism by immersion, which they learned from the Baptists. Then some few of them joined with the Baptists. These were moderate Calvinists drawn by the preaching of George Whitefield (pron. "Whit-field") and others who had certain Arminian tendencies. A small number of these headed by Shubal Stearns left Connecticut and moved to Guilford (now Randolph) County, North Carolina, and organized the Sandy Creek Baptist Church in 1755. They were known as "Separate" Baptists. The Separate Baptists were aggressive in evangelism and appealed to plain working people who had little education. They reached out to Virginia and founded the Dan River Church in Pittsylvania County in 1760. Spreading like wildfire they worked in the lower counties of the state. Then they established the Upper Spotsylvania Church north of the James River in 1769. Other churches came in rapid succession as the Separates led all other groups.

350 YEARS OF BAPTIST HISTORY
by Pastor G. Holmes Moore
Bible Baptist Church of St. Louis, MO 1988 marked 350 years of continuous Baptist history in America! The first Baptist churches were established in 1638 in the colony of Rhode Island. One was established in Providence by Roger Williams, and the other in Newport by John Clarke. Williams was only a Baptist for a brief period and his church was not long lived, so Baptist history is better traced through Clarke and the Newport church. Our church was founded in 1954 as an independent Baptist church. We have never been a Denominational church in the sense of belonging to some Convention or Association. However, we are Baptists by conviction and hold, in doctrine and polity, to the historic and regular Baptist position, believing that to be the Biblical position. Be sure to read the following article that points out the Calvinistic bent of Baptists in this country from the earliest times. Most Baptists know little of this history, particularly as it relates to doctrine. THREE HUNDRED FIFTY YEARS OF CONTINUOUS BAPTIST HISTORY IN AMERICA "Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein." (Jer. 6:16)

by the late Norman H. Wells
Central Baptist Church, Cincinnati, Ohio Every Baptist preacher, with any understanding of the Scriptures, knows that a Baptist church is supposed to be independent. All Baptist preachers claim to be independent and will also state that their church is independent. All Baptists use the words autonomous, sovereign, independent, etc. to describe their churches. The churches of The Southern Baptist Convention, the American Baptist Convention, The Conservative Baptist Association, The Baptist Bible Fellowship, The General Association of Regular Baptists, The World Baptist Fellowship, etc. all claim that their churches are independent. They all recognize that this is what they are supposed to be. It becomes apparent that for Baptist preachers and Baptist churches to claim to be independent doesn’t necessarily make it so! Some, I believe, are deliberately lying! What is an independent Baptist church? The characteristics are easy to see: 1. An independent Baptist church is a
