The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) - a new shoot on a 2500 year old trunk. The Buddha didn't drive a car. He didn't have to take a stance on GM technology or European integration, and he managed without a computer. All the same, his teaching is just as relevant now as it was 2500 years ago, and is today one of the fastest-growing spiritual traditions in the western world. Since 1967, the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) has been presenting Buddhist teaching and practice in a way which is particularly suited to people in an industrialised society. Gunaketu here gives a short overview of this tradition. Buddhism in a nutshell The FWBO is the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order, and draws inspiration from the Buddha. Buddhism is a spiritual tradition which through teaching and practice help people to develop that compassionate love, wisdom and vitality we all have in potential. It is a treasury of advice and inspiration for those who want to develop their mind and being to ever higher levels. It is a way of life that has freedom as its essence and culminates in Enlightenment. The Buddha was the first person who, 2500 years ago in northern India, woke up to how the reality we live in really is. He was not divine, and certainly not a God, but a human being who after many years of determined searching realised his potential. After a gradual but radical transformation, he conquered all the limitations we as human beings struggle with. Thus emancipated, he did not withdraw, but wandered round India showing others how they could undergo the same transformation. It is this insight and these methods that over the millennia have been called the Buddha-dharma (Buddha's way), or in the last hundred years - Buddhism.

Friends of the Western Buddhist Order
Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) is a Buddhist movement that was founded by Sangharakshita in , along with the Western Buddhist Order (in 1968). Sangharakshita was ordained as a Theravadin bhikkhu and spent many years living in India. He returned to the UK at the request of the English Sangha Trust. Having seen that, despite considerable interest in the Dharma British Buddhism was formalistic, sectarian, and riven by discord, Sangharakshita set out to start a new Buddhist movement. Despite the name, the WBO is now a world-wide Buddhist movement with activities in every continent except Antarctica. Membership of the order is limited by one main criterion, the ability to Go for Refuge to the Three Jewels ; that is the Buddha Buddhadharma , and the Sangha . Since, as Sangharakshita has emphasized, it is the act of

The FWBO is a worldwide Buddhist Order devoted to teaching the essential truths of Buddhism in a format suited to the Western practitioner in the modern world. FWBO-NYC offers meditation classes and Buddhist study for all levels of experience in the heart of the New York City.
Friends of the Western Buddhist Order. The FWBO was founded by an English Buddhist, Sangharakshita who spent many years studying Buddhism in India, before returning to the West. The FWBO is a network of communities, meditation centers and other institutions dedicated to bringing the spirit of Buddhism to the West. The forms in which Buddhist truths are expressed always adapt according to circumstances. But the essence of Buddhism transcends culture and conditions.
Now that Buddhism has come to the West, westerners are faced with the task of creating new and viable Buddhist traditions for the modern world. Over the last thirty years the FWBO has grown to be one of the largest Buddhist movements in the West, with canter's and activities in many cities around the world.

URGYEN SANGHARAKSHITA
Sangharakshita is one of the founding fathers of Western Buddhism. He is a prolific writer on Buddhism, as well as a poet and meditator. He is a widely-read, extensively-travelled and deeply experienced student of both Eastern Buddhism and the Western cultural tradition. He is also the founder of The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order - the FWBO - known as Trailokya Bauddha Mahasangha Sahayaka Gana (TBMSG) in India. It is a large and dynamic Buddhist movement with Centres in nearly twenty countries, and is dedicated to encouraging people to live the Buddhist Life to the fullest possible extent in the modern world. Sangharakshita was born in 1925 in Tooting, South London, and grew up as Denis Lingwood. He read voraciously as a child, especially during a long period when he was confined to bed, having being diagnosed (incorrectly) as suffering from heart disease. Largely self-educated, he developed an interest in the cultures and philosophies of the East early on and realized, reading at the age of sixteen the Diamond Sutra and the Platform Sutra of Hui Neng, that he was a Buddhist, and had always been one. The Second World War took him to India, where he stayed on to become the Buddhist bhikshu Sangharakshita ('Protected by the Spiritual Community'). His first ordination was in the Theravadin tradition, but Sangharakshita also studied and practiced intensively under leading teachers from the Tibetan Vajrayana traditions and Chinese Ch'an. He went on to teach and write extensively on Buddhism and is the author of over forty books, translating the Buddhist tradition into terms relevant and inspiring to Westerners and Easterners alike. He is an accomplished poet and a commentator on literature and the arts.

The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) is a Buddhist movement founded in London in 1967. It seeks to create the conditions needed for the effective practice of Buddhism in modern society. It has grown into a varied and energetic tradition of practice, and communal institutions.
The Western Buddhist Order, around which the FWBO is focused, is a spiritual community of men and women who have committed themselves to following the Buddhist path to Enlightenment. Order members have made that commitment - traditionally known as going for Refuge to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha - the central point of their lives. In particular, they have chosen to make the WBO the context in which they are trying to gain Enlightenment.
Having returned to England in the mid-1960s, FWBO founder Sangharakshita saw the need for a new Buddhist movement that was faithful to the values and teachings of the Buddhist tradition and was relevant to the conditions of the modern world. This meant avoiding the twin dangers of transplantation and adaptation. Sangharakshita believed it would be a mistake to try to practise an Asian form of Buddhism in the very different conditions he now found himself. At the same time he did not want to water Buddhism down to suit modern tastes. Instead he attempted to base the new movement on the core teachings that underlie all the schools of Buddhism, and to apply their principles in the modern world.

What is Buddhism? Buddhism is a path of practice and spiritual development leading to Insight into the true nature of life. Buddhist practices such as meditation are means of changing oneself in order to develop the qualities of awareness, kindness, and wisdom. The experience developed within the Buddhist tradition over thousands of years has created an incomparable resource for all those who wish to follow a path - a path which ultimately culminates in Enlightenment or Buddhahood. Because Buddhism does not include the idea of worshipping a creator God, some people do not see it as a religion in the normal, Western sense. The basic tenets of Buddhist teaching are straightforward and practical: nothing is fixed or permanent; actions have consequences; change is possible. Thus Buddhism addresses itself to all people irrespective of race, nationality, or gender. It teaches practical methods (such as meditation) which enable people to realise and utilise its teachings in order to transform their experience, to be fully responsible for their lives and to develop the qualities of Wisdom and Compassion. There are around 350 million Buddhists and a growing number of them are Westerners. They follow many different forms of Buddhism, but all traditions are characterised by non-violence, lack of dogma, tolerance of differences, and, usually, by the practice of meditation .
